just got a slightly faster web connection and am looking to download come quality freebies ;)
What do you consier absolute "must-have" freeware programs?
All opinions greatly appreciated.
Open Office v1.1
http://www.openoffice.org/
This is a full office suite, FREEWARE...
It's essentially Windows Office 97, or Sun's StarOffice..( formerly freeware, bought by Sun, now sold by them in enhanced form.. )
There is NO E-MAIL in the freeware versions.. Use Outlook, Eudora, Mozilla, Thunderbird ( Firefox compliment e-mail program..)
Windows version is approx. 64 megabytes...
Also some good download managers, like GoZilla, etc.. on download page..
I planned to mention grisoft's AVG antivirus program as well. The program updates automatically when necessary and even these updates are free. So I'll second your recommendation.
Linux -- it cures clippityitis
And here's a good Freeware Site to start your own personal search for software that piques your interest..

with Audiograbber you can record streaming audio to listen to later, or to burn to cd. (If you're interested in streaming audio, you'll also want/need the latest Real Player, Winamp, and of course Windows Media Player).
go to publicradio.com for a tv-guide of streaming public-radio programs, and links to their sites (many archive their programs).
also Kazaa Lite, for file-exchange of music files.
also, see download.com. you can set the search criteria for "freeware".
Cygwin.
I switched over to Ad-Aware for my spyware nuking pleasure.
War Driving or Chalking?
I use, or have available, almost all of the security and drive clutter clearing software mentioned on this thread. What a serious internet-surfer absolutely needs:
AVG Antivirus
Adaware
Spybot
System Security Suite
I also use Add-Remove Pro rather than the Add-Remove in Windows control panel. Tweakui XP is a good one to have, as is Reg Cleaner.
Once a month I run msconfig to keep the start-up programs to a minimum.
With a cable connection running on average at 350kbs, I don't want to see the "hourglass" thingy on my screen at all.
thanks to everyone...lots of great stuff. Keep em coming! :)
No knock-offs - but the actual games coded into roms on the original arcade boxes. All done in the name of history preservation.
Must be seen to be appreciated!
??? I just checked for updates after reading that & there was a new one.
A brand of cereal?
FTP Commander is a very easy & small program for uploading files. http://www.internet-soft.com/
Interesting. I checked a couple of days ago and there hadn't been any updates for weeks. That's why I dumped it and got Ad-Aware.
Spybot had an update yesterday. It found a trojan, StartPage-EH, that Ad-Aware SE didn't detect.
Yes indeed. I've got a quarter of one 200 gig hard drive devoted solely to ROM storage, care, and feeding. Love it.
