I like it. So did Charley "Go Away"?

Heard it came close to Sanibel. Bet it washed up some great shells!

Guy from emergency operations center in Punta Gorda area said there is "significant loss of life." per live feed of NBC2.

Half of fire stations were lost.

3 hospitals destroyed.

Only thing worse was Andrew.

Port Charlotte area.

Federal disaster declaration already in place from President.

Probably not.

It is going very fast.

However, overnight usually produces at least a temporary intensification.250

It WILL be a hurricane at landfall....I think probably cat 2.

From some of the initial footage, this looks like Andrew type damage. Andrews winds were a little bit faster, but I think the damage from Charly will be more widespread, I mean heck, the darn thing tore through the state, the looong way!

One of my most vivid memories after Andrew was the lack of the color Green in the aftermath. Trees were simply denuded of leaves and the grass was covered with debris. That, and these poor birds, whose feathers were ripped off by the horrible winds, flopping helplessly on the ground..

Smart move.

It crossed Havana last night as a 2 and was a 4 at 3 this afternoon, in less miles.

I heard that. My place is on the south end but I doubt there's going to be much difference.

Still listing to Ft Myers video webstream. The local official is on now, numerous injuries and deaths, downtown Punta Gorda is gone, parts of Port Charlotte gone, all three hospitals partially destroyed & non-functional, massive rescue effort underway, morning will bring pictures that will equal damage from Andrew, winds estimated gusted to 165 mph, cost in damage will rival Andrew.

I haven't been on line since this afternoon. I am wondering about damage in Wauchula, FL. My company has a farm supply warehouse in Wauchula. Does anyone have any word about damages there? I heard the storm passed right over Wauchula, but don't know how high the winds were when it passed.

"Three dead, 50 injured in Punta Gorda. per our local news, but they must have gotten it somewhere!"

I just caught part of report on nbc-2.com. I am not sure if the location was Punta Gorda, port Charlotte, or maybe somewhere else, but...They said that all 3 hospitals were taken out...and that they lost half of there fire stations.

I think this will exceed Andrew, in unadjusted dollars anyways. This storm ain't over yet! My prayers to the people who got hit. I live just across I75 on the other side of the state. Wish I could do something for them. Hopefully, Florida emergency services will have learned lessons from Andrew, and help will get there quickly.

I am surprised the Hospitals were damaged, one would think those buildings to be built somewhat better than the rest..

And THAT estimate of damages ignores ALL of the interior, Kissimmee, Orlando, and Daytona!

Those areas haven't been heard from yet.

IMHO, I don't think Charlie would have made a complete lap
around the track here in Daytona if Tony Stewart was in town....

Tony would have put Charlie in the wall by turn 4 before Charlie was able to complete a full "lap"...

,,,and in other news, the winds are much more calm here beachside in Daytona, but still gusting fairly strong.

...it ain't over til it's over ??...

True....but the water is not as conducive to strengthening.

Who knows what will happen though...this thing has not acted very normal so far.
