I'm just down the road from her. I'll call tomorrow and see if she needs any help.

You were in a good place, then, for Fran's wrath.

I was just hoping perhaps this cold front that is lingering over NC might push Fran on East out to sea instead of letting it ride over Raleigh as the forecast is now showing. Even a brief fling of high winds will flatten many houses now that the ground is so soggy......and I just do not think I can sit here and listen to those thuds again.....but I HATE thinking of leaving.....what to do!

We are very fortunate where we live. For some reason the longest we have ever been w/o power is 12 hours. It was 12 hrs for Fran and for the bad ice storm. The only reason we can figure is because there is a large nursing home a few blocks up the road from us. Don't know if that's the reason or not but they seem to get to us pretty quick.

The Charlotte Co. Airport sustained major damage. There were evacuees at the airport, and the building failed. Major damage to boats. Expect little more news until daylight.

Apparently 95-100% of the homes on the Lee County Barrier Islands are destroyed.

Things aren't real definitive but it appears there was widespread total destruction of homes in Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte.

I didn't catch the names, but the news reported 70% damage to homes on one small island and 100% on another. Weren't island names I recognized from earlier reports.

excuse me - push CHARLEY not FRAN (brain fry) - out to sea.

To all those in Florida where the damage has been so devastating - will be sending help down that way - asap. but how tragic for the people whose lives have just been torn apart. Prayers for God's mercy and outpouring help and love for all of them!

Where are you getting your information about the barrier islands? Any word on Pine Island's condition?

It is my wife's laptop. She has 2 batteries, and I hooked up
a "jump your car" power supply by plugging in a 110 converter (like you would use in the cigarette lighter of your vehicle to turn the 12v dc into 110 ac) and can "tap" power off of it for the puter..

The internet connection is a Sprint, PCM-CIA card that is satellite
connected. You pay for usage by buying a "plan" like your cell phone. I have used it in a few non-power situations (two times at home with no power, and in the car while my wife was driving,) and it has worked great. When you click on the shortcut key,a screen pops up in the middle of the puterscreen, you hit connect, the "card" sends your ID info to the satellite
and a five step graph shows you your connected signal strength(1 is low 5 is max).Minimize the connection screen, choose your internet connection, and log in to FR !!

Atlanta news (10:00 pm radio) hasn't even heard that Orlando is "threatened" yet!

Much less that the storm was ALREADY PAST Orlando, had hit Disney and the parks, and was headed towards Daytona!

Maybe by tommorrow morning they'll tell us that is it back at sea.

(Eye is out at sea now, winds north of Daytona are from the north, south of Daytona will be from the west now.

Diminishing.

They got the worst of it, looked like it weakened a little after crossing the Orlando metropolitan area.
Who would have thought that Daytona would get a hurricane through the back door like that.

I think so. The guy on TWC said something about the border between NC and SC. That's Brunswick Co., NC and Horry Co., SC.

The eye went right over the top of them, 90-1005 mph winds.

No word on how much damage. Yet.
