The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

There are records of witness statements from a variety of places around europe that involve the sighting of men dressed in black, wearing strange clothing with hoods and masks, and carrying strange devices that resembled "brooms" or ""scythes". It was reported that these men would show up out of nowhere, and "sweep" the fields and roads, disappearing almost as quickly as they arrived. All of this was immediately prior to the massive "breakout" of the plague. It was believed then that these "black men" started the plague.

If I go to Radio Shack or some large toy store and buy a model airplane or a model rocket, aren't there federal regulations that stipulate the maximum altitude? I remember last year before the war the toy planes were an issue.

Is it legal for me as a private citizen to launch a high-altitude balloon? What if I live near an airport? If not, how can they sell those things?

Not to get into the "freedom vs security" issue, but "there should be a law against that".

Brain is fried here. I remember it, but can't think of the origin. I do recall that "Severnaya" means "north", which we discussed at the time as well.

hmm, hispanics... I know of a group of people that looks remarkably like they are hispanic. Interesting story.

I just spent the last ten days with the Tejanos in South Texas, and you are absolutely right: ME types look remarkably similar to some Mexicans and people of Mexican heritage. From my limited observations, the Border Patrol was scrutinizing everyone passing through a certain airport near the Tex/Mex border, and in a stretch of about an hour, I saw them detain no less than 11 people. I also note, again, from my limited observations, that all of the Tejano I met are God-fearing, patriotic Amercians who see themselves as the first line of defense against ME invaders from across the border.

Interesting question. I dunno. But I'm tempted to say that as far as the sale of the balloon itself, I have also seen them put to other uses. Sometimes they used to be filled with conventional oxygen and used as an exercise implement for kids. I would think that it's role as flying object requires a substantial amount of helium. Is helium a controlled substance? Should it be?

I know, too, that amateur rocket enthusiasts often launch multistage vehicles that reach some pretty astounding altitudes for the nature of the vehicle. Is that illegal in this age of terror and STINGER threats? I dunno. Should it be?

By the way, I had brought my 5-year-old and 2-year-old along with me; my son couldn't believe the destruction, and he was just so impressed to see the Guardsmen. He kept saying, "Wow, look at their guns. I'm so glad they're here to protect us." ... That's my boy!
