CHICAGO (CBS 2) Illinois' senate race is heating up with both Democrat Barack Obama and new Republican candidate Alan Keyes in town pressing the flesh and warming up to voters.
The Republican candidate in this race may just be getting started, but according to an exclusive new CBS 2/Newsradio 780 poll, Keyes has a long way to go. 67 percent of Illinois voters prefer Democrat Obama; 28 percent would choose Keyes.
Keyes and his supporters were feeling the heat of the August sun as he announced for U.S. Senate at a crowded rally in Arlington Heights. Our exclusive voter opinion survey shows Obama generating another kind of heat.
Obama's lead in our CBS 2/Newsradio 780 Survey was most pronounced among women voters, 74 percent to 21percent for Keyes. Among men, it was 59 percent to 36 percent.
There was no surprise in strongly Democratic Chicago: 79 percent for Obama, 16 percent for Keyes.
But in the heavily Republican collar counties, it was Obama with 62 percent, Keyes with 34 percent. . Even downstate, 56 percent of those polled preferred Obama to 38 percent for Keyes. The results were almost the same in rural areas: 57 percent to 39 percent.
Virtually every Democrat we talked to favored Obama. Among independent voters, 64 percent chose Obama, 30 percent chose Keyes. Even among Republicans, 27 percent defected to Obama, 67 percent chose Keyes.
White voters went 62 percent to 32 percent for Obama; black voters by a margin of 89 percent to 10 percent.
The poll was conducted by Survey USA this past Friday and Saturday. It is accurate to within plus or minus four percentage points.

Ya, that has always been Keyes' major problem. He let his handlers muzzle him. He only they had let Keyes be Keyes, he would have had electoral success.
I'm a native Iowan who has lived in the North Shore 'burbs of Chicago for 7 years. I am perpetually sickened by the Louisiana-style cesspit of corruption of this state, regardless of the party. I am even more sickened by the shoulder-shrugging attitude of the voters, who seem to think it's colorful and funny.

Keyes has always been at his best when he's behind in the polls.
I don't agree with Keyes' views on abortion by the way. I think they are extreme, and I don't share his a priori assumptions. But then of course, I don't agree with Keyes on many substantive issues beyond style. That is just the way it is.

Not necessarily true. A "rolling average" poll takes 3 days on average. A "small sample" poll (400 or so respondents) can be done in a day, depending on the firm doing the polling.
Most polls are run in two days and, from what I've been told, the poll in question was conducted prior to Keyes' announcement, but after it was expected that he would announce.
What is the base Republican vote in Illinois? I may be wrong, but I have to believe it's higher than 28%.
The guys I know from downstate claim that Illinois is more corrupt than Louisiana and it originates from Chicago.
My mom is from Iowa, too (Davis County). I have many good memories of that state (except for the time I got stung on the lip by a large wasp).
I just can't believe a guy like Obama should get a free ride in this election. It is somewhat of a gamble to bring in Keyes but sometimes you have to roll the dice.

What I'm trying to get at is how many disaffected voters there are. There are so many people who have just dropped out and quit voting. If they are like many voters here in PA, they quit voting because no one was representing them FROM EITHER PARTY. Everyone perpetuates the idea that you have to run to the middle to get elected and use as evidence the many close races that are run.
Perhaps when a conservative runs in Illinois, the disaffected and turned off voter will return. What people want is a real choice, not a democrat socialist and a republican socialist. We've (the GOP) has been overtaken by liberals thinking that they are helping us. They are just helping themselves to a second bite at the apple.

If anyone else made that comment, it'd be no big deal. Hannity can talk about tax slavery, but heavens if a black candidate does.
Keyes was on Hannity tonight and Colmes said Obama declined the invitation to join in.
