Oh gee! Another flip-flop from Kerry!
KERRY AND KELLER AND MOVIES [Tim Graham] Times Watch notes today that when you watch the Kerry home movies as rendered by Spielberg tonight, here's how then-New York Times columnist (now Executive Editor) Bill Keller opened his September 7, 2002, column (if impatient, skip to last sentence):

"A couple of columns ago, while plowing through a crowd of Democrats who want to be president, I threw an elbow at Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. I suggested that his claim to be a global thinker leaned rather excessively on his 30-year-old heroism in Vietnam. And, relying on a report in the usually dependable Boston Globe, I mocked him for pulling out a movie camera after a shootout in the Mekong Delta and re-enacting the exploit, as if preening for campaign commercials to come. Cheap shot, the senator's people said of the notion that he belabors his war record. And just plain wrong about those movies. Which is how I came to be sitting in a wing chair in the senator's office the other day while he plugged in a videocassette and fumbled with a balky remote. 'It is so innocent,' he said by way of introducing his youthful cinematic effort, adding a little defensively, 'I have no intention of using it' for campaign purposes." Posted at 07:32 PM

What was the story of the three silent people on stage with him. A person must have some kind of mental problem being carted out on state so that the host can point out how miserable and screwed up your life is.

They came off as Jerry's Kids - carted out, smiling, waving, as Sweeny told us a sob story for each of the grinning, silent folks. In fact, the only story that was sympathetic was the fella who was fired for trying to organize a union. The other two folks failed to adapt and help themselves - they have fallen and have no desire to get up. No sympathy from me.

The disconnect between the world view of the two parties is enourmous. I can't relate at all to these antics, much as I am sure a dedicated democrat can't relate at all to me and my lot in life.

" I would love to see someone remind the crowd that it was RONALD REAGAN who we have to thank for that."

The audience knows. They've heard Ron Jr speak at their convention, Their Pavlovian response is to think "YEAH, WE (Democrats) took down the Soviet Union" - of course, the fact that Stalin is their hero and they're still implimenting the Red Plan is a detail they won't go exploring. They'll Make sure never to skim below the surface.

We had a few wits invade FR right after GW won the fight to pass the tax cut, insisting that he had raised taxes. OUR Pavlovian response was to think he HAD (rather than his father) RAISED our taxes instead of lowering them. WE didn't buy it. Unlike libs, conservatives have successfully resisted brainwashing.

Yep. They sure sound like war mongers.

They're quite insecure on the subject. And allows them not to talk about domestic policies.

"Quick BIBLE TRIVA..................Which way did the Walls of Jericho fall? IN or OUT?"

Wow, Bidden said "Our friends on the other side love to quote the Bible, just as Joshua's trumpets brought down the walls of Jericho, just as American values brought down the Berlin wall, so will radical fundamentalist fall to the terrible, swift power of our ideas as well as our swords."

I'm think he is taping about fundamental Christians. He didn't say radical fundamental Muslims.

From O'Reilly, Interview with NEWT!! (electronic closed caption copy)

Joining us is newt gingrich. Now, mr. Speaker, i want to do this in a nonpart son way. You're the savviest guy in the country about how politicians must position themselves. I've got kerry's speech. There's nothing you haven't heard before. It avoids anything controversial. No gay marriage talk, no we're going to pull out of iraq. He's obviously not going to pull out of iraq. And a lot of generalisms that we've heard. Is it going to be effective doing it this way?

>> First of all, bill, you put your finger on weakness number one, which is the idea of running for an hour, which sound a little bit like clinton's speech way back in 1988 when he was the keynote speaker for dukakis, and he went on so long, people were kinds of embarrassed for him. I think you hit it about righT. 28 minutes. The speech that was so tight, so well crafted, that it could then become a half-hour, sort of infomercial for the next six weeks, that would have been the right thing. Second, if I were in the audience making a checklist, there are a couple of keys I'd usE. If he talking to the -- is he talking to the country or is he talking to the delegates? If he's talking to the delegates, this speech is a dead loser. He's got to communicate to the country that he's capable of being president. Second, are there enough specks, particularly about iraq, that he just doesn't get pounded on by the observers who say, you know, he's not telling us anything? I don't think he can just get by with saying I'll do it better than george W. Bush. What will he do better and how will he do it?

>> Let me stop you therE. I can answer that question. He is basically saying, as he said before, that he's going to get other countries involved. See, he's implying this. He's implying that france and germany and some other countries around the world dislike president bush so much they're not going to cooperate because of him. He says that once he gets in there, then he's going to be able to persuade theM. That's the only specific about iraq.

>> I just think that's not going to go -- it won't carry him very far. Let me put it that way. I think the other question, since you've seen the speech and I haven't, you can probably answer this better than I can, bill. I think it's really important that this speech is about kerry and why kerry could be president, rather than about bush. This is the moment when john kerry's got to step uP. And people got to, after tonight, say to themselves, you know, I can imagine him as commander in chief. If he crosses that threshold, then that will be a fairly successful speech. Bill: Right. He does that, and particularly in the beginning of the speecH. He lays out why he should be leading the nation. And it's eaK. It's pretty to the point. He only attacks bush one time very specifically. He says that president bush misled us into the iraq war, and he would never do thaT. That's the only real bang attack on bush. You know, he criticizes the health care and the stuff you've heard a lot of times beforE.

>> On the misled thing, it will be interesting when they get to the debate, because I think president bush is going to have a fairly firm response that he in fact didn't mislead people and that the butler commission, the senate intelligence committee and the 9/11 commission have all come back and said he didn'T. But that will be a debate they can have between them. The other question I think I've got is when you get done hearing the speech, and you're going to go right into this later in the show, so you put your finger on a hot button herE. How many people will be passionate about trying to get kerry to be president as opposed to irritated with george W. Bush? My sense up till now is there's not a huge groundswell for kerry. There's a lot of people who don't like george W. Bush. But there's no great underlying excitement about kerry. It will be interesting to see tonight, can he ignite not in the hall -- because the hall will be fine. But can he ignite out in the country people sitting around and turning to look at each other saying I want this guy to win. Bill: He's got a big problem, because the television viewership for the convention has been so low. And if he does go for an hour, I don't know if people will stay there. Shiss slogan, this is interesting. Last night's edwards' slogan is hope is on the way, remember? Hope is on the way. Kerry is help is on the waY. So he says it five times in a row. Hope is on the way yesterday, help is on the way todaY. I mean, I just think it's --

>> Well, bill, your fact checkers might want to check this during the show. I believe help is on the way was dick cheney's theme, talking about the military in his acceptance speech in philadelphia in 2000, if i remember correctly. Bill: Oh, is that right?

>> I think they picked up exactly the theme that vice president cheney used in philadelphia. That may be interesting. Bill: I want you to react to my analysis of kerry's speecH. Very briefly. John kerry, in this speech, is trying to persuade the people who aren't convinced on who to vote for, the independents and the undecided, that he can make their life better. It's as simple as thaT. He says at one point, I'm going to save your family $1,000 on health care. He doesn't say how he can do it. But he's trying to say if you elect me, the country will be better, and your life will be better. That's the theme. Last word on it.

>> Well, i think that theme might work, except tomorrow morning people are going to say show me houfment and i suspect in september bill frist is going to offer to move the bill in the senate and taunt the senate democrats to move this stuff. So we'll find out whether by mid september people believe there's $1,000 a piece in that health package. Sounds a little bit of mcgovern's dem graph of 1972. Bill: Thank you, we appreciate it very much and we'll see in a couple of hours whether john kerry can pull off this speech.

I was just watching O'Reilly and Newt was on. He said that Kerry will make the phrase "Help is on the Way" part of his speech as opposed to Edward's "Hope is n the Way".

Newt said that "Help is on the Way" was a phrase Dick Cheney used in his campaign speech.

It should be interesting. I guess they are not creative enough to think of their own catch phrases.
