Ship's Master is the proper title for the commanding officer of a merchant ship.

Fox News said the ship's name was Jacob Tomaloo. I can't promise on the spelling. I have not been able to find it in any written articles. Hope it helps.

Bet that "joke" nets him a body cavity search, along with a full search of the ship.

And there was a train stooped this morning from Philly..

My Grandfather was stooped too, but it was mainly due to a slipped disc in his back.

Aren't most ships registered in Liberia or other "flags of convenience" countries? So a "Turkish" ship might not actually be registered in Turkey.

These days we only need a destroyer in the local hemisphere to take care of the problem.

The Coast Guard is boarding EVERY ship of foreign flag starting today.

Wednesday, June 30, 2004

STORIES BACKGROUND
•Mexican Official Wants Border Eliminated•Six Airports on Lookout for Suspected Terrorists
WASHINGTON — The Coast Guard will board every foreign-flagged vessel that sails into a U.S. port beginning Thursday to check whether it is complying with rules aimed at foiling terrorists.

A maritime treaty signed by about 150 countries requires each ship to have a security officer, alarm system, automatic identification system, access restrictions to the engine room and bridge, and a method of checking IDs of people who board. Each ship must have a certificate signed by the country that flags it saying it is in compliance with the treaty.

"Ship master may refer to the individual who is flown or boated out to the ship to steer it through the bay, river, etc. Usually someone local to the area that knows the water ways.

We used to get these guys on board when I was in the navy."

Actually it is the Pilot who boards the vessel to guide it into port.

"Master" is the title and license given to the commander of a merchant ship.

"Captain" is a naval rank, and is also the title given by courtesy to the commander of a naval vessel regardless of his rank.

However, in everyday speech the two are mixed, thus we say "captain of a fishing boat" even though he has neither a master's license or the naval rank of captain.

"Pilot" is a civilian who is employed by a port to guide ships through the narrow waterways because of his local knowledge of tides, currents and channels.

I hope this clears things up.

MSNBC: Coast Guard responds to bomb scare on ship

The commander of a Turkish merchant vessel has recanted his claim that there is a bomb on board his ship, but the U.S. Coast Guard is still preparing for a full inspection of the ship off the coast of Delaware.

According to officials, the Coast Guard had boarded the ship in the Port of Philadephia earlier Thursday for what is being described as a routine inspection when the master of the ship apparently became agitated that the process was taking so long and blurted out that he had a bomb on board.

He quickly withdrew the claim, but, according to one official, "It was too late — he had already rung the bell." So the Coast Guard ordered the ship back out to sea for a full inspection.

The Coast Guard confirmed to NBC News that it is waiting for bomb-sniffing dogs to begin the search and said they have no independent information that any explosive device is on board.

Might be just me, but I'd have figured a ships master was the person in charge of the cargo, and the captain was the person in charge of the ship.

And, I believe the Coast Guard should have adequate firepower to scuttle any cargo ship, if necessary.
