HOMELAND INSECURITY

Backup electrical systems failed to kick in

A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

Absolutely. However different armies stress different operational techniques. The British SAS do things a little differently from the Australian SAS and they both operate just a bit differently from American SF doctrine. Even inside our own forces Delta does things a bit differently from the SEALs. Where would they have been trained? Here's a wild SWAG: I wonder if there are any documents that detail SPETZNATS tactics? I'll bet there are a lot of underpaid or out of work fomer operators from that group!

My guess is they learned the tactics from three sources:

1) COunter SPECOPS against Soviet Spetnatz in Afghanistan in the 1979-1989 time frame
2) Green Beret military support of the Muhjahideen in the Afghan war
3) Recent Counter-Specops experiences in the Afghan and Iraq theaters of operations

They also have members who have law enforcement experience in ME countries...but not as highly trained as our LE types in Tactical OPS.

"Is "operator" an insult?"

No, actually it is the highest form of compliment that can be given. An "operator" is a trained and totally dedicated professional. All of our full time special forces folks are considered "operators." Even the reservists who wear the Green Beret and are "flash qualified" (meaning they have completed the Q Course) can be considered operators.

A run-of-the-mill raghead terrorist is not an "operator." He's an uneducated, not too bright individual who is willing to kill himself just to kill a lot of innocent folks. That's why I laugh at the so called "training films" of terrorists shooting guns and clearing rooms. If that's the best they can offer my IDPA club will clean their clocks in record time, I kid you not!

One big tip for the good guys handling this type of threat:

Determining the Area of Vulnerability (AV) built into the AQ hijacking plan is the most essential element of interrupting this style of hijacking.

Use maximum effort to exploit it. Its only going to be a couple of seconds long, so time on target is essential, and follow through with your counter-assault with extreme vigor.

The AV in this case is defined by the time the AQ guys announce to the time they achieve consolidation and initial positions of strength.

I sincerely hope that helps in interdicting forceful hijacking scenarios like this seems to be.

PS: Stuff that in your ear Usama, or anywhere else you wish.

Now THAT I can follow. I'm going to guess that there may have been other indicators that were unreported or missed.

Something binary, fast acting, but not TOTALLY debilitating.

Something to chew on.

Okay, I'm going somewhere with this, but I'm not sure exactly where. Follow my thinking:

I agree with your source assessment. But setting up a raid or an ambush in mountainous terrain is a far different prospect from taking control of an airliner either in flight or on the ground and starting that takeover from inside the aircraft. That is a highly specialized artform. I'll bet it's not something our SF guys would teach. But I'll bet there are still other operators out there with that knowledge who would impart it for the right $$$. How about a rogue element inside GSG9? Or even French SF/counter-terror outfits?

Gotcha. I thought it was referring to the fact that my military expertise is with "crescent hammers".

How about "equal opportunity" employers? The "PC" type?

Thanks to all for the welcomes. Here's about half of Osama's message from the Italian text. It must have been written by a non Italian, since there are many mistakes & unintelligible words. Unfortunately, I'll have to leave blank spaces for the most questionable words.

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
This is a message to our neighbors north of the Mediterranean - a message that contains an initiative to a truce as an interaction on our part to the positive reactions that have been manifested by you.

That Allah be praised, that Allah be praised, that praise be Allah. He who built the skies and the earth in his justice and has allowed victims of oppression to vindicate themselves from their oppressors exactly as they have been treated. Allah will bring peace to those that follow the path to salvation.

It is my responsibility to remind you that justice is an obligation to those that we love and to those that we hate. The truth even if uncovered by an enemy is always acceptable and respectable. The fundamental rules of stability and security are justice (in the global sense) and the end of injustice and aggression. As they have said in times past: Inequity reverses itself.

The results of injustice are ____ and ____. That which happens in Palestine is a lesson for all. That which happened on September 11th and March 11th in Madrid is your own_____ sent back to you.

As evidence, security is a vital necessity for all humanity. We will never accept that you monopolize it only for yourselves and for your own well being. It is evident that all rational and mature people will not allow their politicians to play with their security and peace.

After that which has been said we tell you that your definition of our acts using the word "terrorism" is nothing more than your own condemnation and the definition of you yourselves and your own acts. Keep in mind that the reaction is proportionate to your own actions. And our actions are a reaction to your actions that are the destruction and massacres against our brothers in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine. The assassination of the old handicapped sheik Ahmed Yassine - that butchering should have disgusted and caused the indignation of the entire world would be enough of a testimony to your actions.

We promise Allah that we will vindicate ourselves against the United States for his death with the permission of Allah.

Tell us with what right and for what reason are your dead perceived as innocents and ours as nothing? And in what doctrine is your blood pure and precious and ours is nothing but water?

NOW THEN TO TREAT YOU IN THE SAME MANNER WOULDN'T THAT BE AN APPLICATION OF JUSTICE?
HE WHO BEGAN THE AGGRESSION IS THE UNJUST ONE

Regarding your politicians and those that follow in their footsteps, those who stubbornly ignore the true problem, which is the occupation of Palestine and those who exaggerate in their_____ to deny us the right to defend ourselves and to resist. Those people there don't respect themselves and they make light of the blood and the mental capacity of their populations because their_____ increases your bloodshed instead of stopping your bloodshed.

Closed in confined space operations are SOP training for law enforcement Tactical Teams. So is close quarter combat in confined spaces.

It has a LE sig.

I know this from personal experience.

One more thing:

Soviet Spetnatz ops manuals are all over the internet. I dont doubt that assessment you gave one bit.

" That is a highly specialized artform."

You are right! Maybe someone (Abu Nidal bunch?) in the ME has written an opus on all the hijackings from the 60's and 70's that is a core teaching tool? Which group did most of those early hijackings?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but if they need the photos for visualization of operations, wouldn't that imply that they'd try to take the aircraft?

I'm not sure that it would be necessary just to use the head for nefarious purposes.

"It has a LE sig."

YOU da MAN! YOU sir...are the DANGEROUS ONE HERE! Perfect. My LEO experience is from the standpoint of being a former State Parole Officer. My CQB is military and thoughtful instruction by friends who have BTDT in real world SF applications. I shoot competition (IDPA) a lot. The cops I compete with show all the earmarks you describe.

You are correct.

The photos would have to be of the exact same type of aircraft they wish to hijack. Thats a clue on its own merit.
