HOMELAND INSECURITY
Backup electrical systems failed to kick in
A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained six days later.
Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

Thanks for the ping on that story and the bump on the original post of mine. I hope you found it useful!
Fallen Angel? You are not fallen. Too many here to pick you up.

You're right

Goodnight, I may be back.
The pizza delivery man had a necklace bomb around his neck.
As they say, only in New York...
Or another take....
Maybe he gave himself up because his pal, UBL is dead or incompacitated or in custody or in a hidey hole...
OR
He gave himself up because he knew he had nothing to lose doing it.
Time will tell.
That is right! I didn't think of it that way.

" They gain nothing by delay, and nukes don't have an indefinite shelf life."
That USED to be true with the old Polonium [?] based "Initiators" in the Nagasaki and Trinity devices.
It has been a long time since I studied Nuclear Engineering [our college had three research Reactors, including a CRITICAL, Heavy Water moderated one].
Some years ago, the ESONOMIST had a review of the way modern Nukes are initiated, and if I remember correctly, a Vaccuum Tube is fired up to supply the stream of Neutrons to accompany the Implosion.
I have no clue as to just what the Physics of a Vaccuum Tube supplied Neutron initiator involves, but it would seem to increase the storage life immensely.
In contrast, the Half Life of Polonium is 138.38 DAYS, so these "initiators"...if indeed used Polonium...would put Time as a critical factor.
No, unfortunately, the Nuke threat IS VERY REAL!!!
As to speculation about the design of the Original "Initiators", see "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Reeves.
The Hiroshima Weapon required NO initiator...just several Critical Masses of 90% U235...and Explosive Assembly.

Worm tries to foil anti-virus researchers
Gregg Keizer, TechWeb News
A new worm tries to slip past anti-virus researchers by shutting down their debugging tools, a security firm said this week.
Atak, which was discovered Monday [US], attempts to terminate any debugger, the tool researchers use to probe virus and worm code they've captured.
"It's really just a lame attempt to stop people who are tying to research it," said Patrick Hinojosa, the chief technology officer of Panda Software. "But any researcher worth his salt will blow right past that."
Although not a serious threat, Atak is another example of how hackers try to complicate the lives of anti-virus researchers.
For instance, numerous worms now include code that tries to shut down specific anti-virus and firewall products, and in years past, viruses "armoured" themselves against probing by making it difficult for debuggers to even open the payload file.(snipped)

The pizza delivery man had an explosive charge with a timed detonator around his neck. That differs from an inner tube full of burning gasoline around your neck. Either way, it makes for a pretty bad day.

al-Harby was rescued in an interesting place.
Stranded at Iran-Afghan border
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said al-Harby contacted the Saudi Embassy in Teheran from the Iranian-Afghan border, where he was stranded. It was not disclosed what al-Harby was wanted for, and his name does not appear on the kingdom's list of 26 most-wanted militants.(snipped)

Trinity and Fat Man were both plutonium implosion devices. Little Boy was a gun type uranium bomb.
Little Boy was a very simple design. Take two chunks of sub-critical U235. One piece is the target, it sits at the end of a gun barrel. The other, smaller piece is shot down the barrel with explosives. When they hit, kablooey!
Plutonium implosion weapons compress a sphere of Pu239 using explosives with impeccably precise timers. The dozens of charges needed to perfectly compress the plutonium have to all go off simultaneously or the weapon will be a dud.
The added complexity of the implosion weapon made testing critical. Implosion weapons have the advantage of needing far less fissionable material so they can be made much smaller. All our current weapons are implosion weapons.

Yup. I don't think it is new. I've noticed I've been victim to these things 6 months prior to any "New" announcements :(
I understand the difference, but I could not help but think of think of this type of bomb as a foreign job.
And you're right...no matter what, it's a bad day for the victims.
Nothing like a little touch of realism.
