Daschle concerned about 'sobering' terror briefing

SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.

The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.

"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.

Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.

Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."

Daschle said the most recent terror briefing was the second this week and contained information that there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Do try to keep up.

No thanks, I don't drink.

So an island State isn't part of the Country because it isn't part of the mainland? How about an island city?

I'm sure those soldiers, at Pearl, who were not at war, would appreciate you spitting on them too. You should apollogize ASAP.

The sneak attack at Pearl, the sneak attack on NYC, the Pentagon, etc. were all equally despicable despite the number of people killed.

I don't drink Alcoholic beverages either, but you might want to start. :-)

Hawaii wasn't a state,in 1941.(Please DO try to keep abreast of things factual.

The Japs bombed SHIPS IN PORT,not a city.( Facts matter;really they do!)

I didn't spit on anyone, but you have and it would help you, honestly it would,if you knew FACTUAL history and could understand written English.

Despicable acts, but completely dissimilar. One was a military attack on a military instillation;the other was a terrorist attack on civilians, with NO nation and no military...just thugs.

"My bet is something on the left coast."

Here is a fact. Earlier this week, there were about 15 big ships waiting outside LA/Long Beach harbor.

That hasn't happened since the days following 9/11/2001.

Something unusual was going on, with the entry into this - - the largest port in the country.

Maybe somebody else in SoCal saw this, and knows about it.

"if they nuked or dirty bombed Houston, there would be 2+million Houstonians with guns hunting muslims. Cops couldn't do a thing (or wouldn't)."

All across the land, it will become open season on our peaceful and tolerant terrorist apologists?

Thank you---I was going to post the same but kept reading to see if someone else made the same point. Sheesh, some people have a bug and don't let facts get in the way.

It may have to do with the new port security rules, the Coast Guard was probably checking the ships and if they didn't comply, they were turned away.

Probably the ships you saw were waiting to be examined before being allowed into the port.

I read or heard that by now some 20 or so ships were turned away.

Three foreign ships turned away at ports

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/business/9061674.htm

WASHINGTON - The Coast Guard denied entry to three foreign ships that planned to enter U.S. ports on Thursday, the first day ships were required to comply with new international security rules.

Coast Guardsmen began boarding every foreign-flagged vessel that arrived to make sure they met the new standards.

The ships denied entry were a freight vessel, an industrial vessel and a drilling vessel. They had wanted to call on port facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, the Upper Northeastern Coast and in Guam, according to Adm. Larry Hereth.

They did not have certificates signed by their flag countries saying they complied with the new rules.

IMHO, and it is only my opinion, no matter what the terrorists do, it is only going to backfire on them. This is not Spain, and Americans for the most part aren't a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys. Spain and the rest of the Euro-trash may cave to the violence, but from what I know of my fellow Americans, it only strengthens our resolve.

So let me get this straight. Tom Ridge cancels a trip to Israel and makes it appear that the country should be bracing for a terror attack any day now...yet his Crayola chart will not budge up one single notch.

Time to trash that stupid thing already, eh Tom?

You are dragging the thread off-topic, no matter how you manage to rationalize it to yourself.

You are not impressing anyone. You are sounding foolish.
