Taking sex differences seriously
Minneapolis (Red) Star Tribune ^ | July 5, 2004 | BONNIE ERBE

I'll bet Dr. Steven Rhoads is just ecstatic over this news. Procter & Gamble has announced a patch for sexually dysfunctional women that has proven successful in clinical trials. Female Viagra, here we come! The free market cannot be far behind, boosted by massive promotion to sell millions of these testosterone skin patches to sex-deprived women. Former wallflowers will soon be stoking and provoking libidinous female desires nationwide. I say Dr. Rhoads must be ecstatic with a mere dash of sarcasm. I recently sat in on a speech by the erudite scholar about his new book, "Taking Sex Differences Seriously," before a Capitol Hill luncheon sponsored by the Independent Women's Forum. I am an unabashed fan of the forum's president and CEO, Nancy Pfotenhauer and listened with great intent as Rhoads delivered his talk.

At first he noted new data he said proved feisty, independent, career-minded women (much like the forum members, he laughed) are more likely to possess higher levels of testosterone than stay-at-home mothers.

Hmmmm, interesting news, I thought. Perhaps I should go have a blood test. The maternal gene seems to have eluded me. Many people would describe me as feisty; more who know me would certainly describe me as career-minded.

Men and women are different - we know that.

However, it does not mean all women or all men fit into one small discernible right-wing or left-wing box.

It's not so much a Left-Wing, Right-Wing thing. It's more like a "reality" thing -- and the left doesn't grasp reality.

The Reviewer went on, "... women with high testosterone levels are ... more competitive, and more conflicted about having children than those with average levels." It's unfortunate and highly un-scholarly to make such rash generalizations about either gender, when it's now clear ... plenty of women are supremely ambitious and not the least bit interested in children.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I think the writer lost the thread to their own argument!

A testosterone patch to amp up a woman's libido? "Kiss me, you fool!" shouted the gal with the moustache.

The company marketing this should raffle off a date with an East German women's swim team member to launch their product. (okay, so there's no more East Germany, but you get the idea).

If I got the patch and thought about nothing but sex, my hubby and I would get nothing accomplished!!! There is a reason why women think less about sex, to keep a couple grounded.
We have a really great time, but there is more to a loving relationship then just sex. I guess if I were having problems in the bedroom, I would appreciate this patch. Neither Dad nor myself need any help.

Have you ever noticed how a small child reacts to a funny joke? You end up having to tell the joke ... the same joke, over and over and over; the kid never gets tired of hearing it. And so it is with a horny woman. A frightening thing, to be sure.

It's truly hormonal changes as women are getting "Older" for years no one paid attention to Women's Health issues

After Child bearing years women really did not have many more years left of "Good Health" and for a long time the Medical Industry didn't care, Men by droves left there wives for younger women or just left and there wives usually became nuerotic and drove there Adult Kids Crazy...

Today it's different women look great and are healthy in there 40's and people are living well into there 90's, still the case is that your hormones DO change, it is ovulation that makes a woman want or crave sex because her body normally is ready to conceive same in the Animal Kingdom when you loose your ability to ovulate you loose Progesterone, Testosterone and you have out of control Estrogen.

The new thing is BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES which is the natural way to put the hormones you loose back in your body and it works! WOMEN HAVE IT TOUGH, you go from PMS, to Peri-menopause to Menopuase most men could not survive it...I am very much into Women's Health Issues and there is something to learn about the female body daily...

You need to review your human physiology. Your facts are incorrect.

Women do not stop making hormones after menopause; they simply produce lesser amounts. There is a slight increase in a woman's sexual interest around ovulation but it is insignificant in terms of reproduction. Women do not experince any type of estrous cycle. Most women do not experience PMS. Peri-menopause is a lable, not a diagnosis. Playing around with hormones, natural or synthetic, is tricky business and should be approached very cautiously.

If you like women's health issues, you need to read more.

If a man can't get the juices flowing in a woman, he can just get her this patch... Another "time-saver" that is going to backfire.

I have to dis-agree as the info I posted has to do with many reliable medical sources, physicians, compounding pharmacists surveys of women between 30 and 60. Yes you are correct you do still produce some hormones between peri-menopause and menopause but it is not enough to sustain good health. Where are you coming up with your info?

>>you loose your ability to ovulate you loose Progesterone, Testosterone and you have out of control Estrogen<<

Aren't these the same hormones that are causing cancers?

I have to respectfully disagree with you. Men did not leave women in droves. I know many more long term couples of my parent's generation then now. Shallow men leave older women to boost their own egos. Whether a woman is a raving sex queen or not, if a 20 year old hottie comes along and wants a married man, the shallow ones will go for it. It's new, it's different and very few 40 year old women look as good as that 20 year old.
I am in my 40's. The sex in my marriage is not sex, it is love making. My husband or myself can have an orgasm with another partner or by ourselves. That is not what marriage is all about.

As for women driving their adult children crazy, that was the attitude of the 50's woman. Women of today make lives for themselves outside of their children and it is acceptable. I lived 34 years of my life as a single woman and get this, WITHOUT sex. I love it now that I am married and can enjoy the gift God has given me. Let's be real. If you never had an orgasm but had the intimate love of your husband, would you miss the orgasm that much? I would not. Sex should not be totally self centered, sex should be love.

Check any medical textbooks written in the last 20 years. Look at the articles published in the New England Journal of Medicine or Lancet.

The popular press has long "medicalized" women's health issues. Good health is not dependent on having the hormonal profile of a 20 year old.

I stand by my reply.

For some women the patch will be an excuse. (Active ingredient: placebo)

Honey you DO have a problem with libido, see P&G says so.

Why do you think Women experience Thyroid, Adrenal fatigue, hot flashes, weight gain, osteoporasis, lack of sex drive? All these are decline in the hormonal system.

I will tell you this I suffered extreme PMS for years and now in my early 40's have had terrible symptoms of peri-menopause lack of sleep mood swings hor flashes night sweats and I am in good health eat right, excercise, but I still suffered, I went on Compound DHEA, Pogesterone, natural herbal supplements and do alot of Yoga that is what saved me from entering what could of been a horrible next phase of life...

First I am not talking about a Sexual issue, and I am telling you the reason I believe that during the 40's to the 60's the high divorce rate was that many men not ALL left there wives when women of that era reached there 40's

WHY? because the changes that women were experiencing in that phase of life were NOT ADDRESSED at all. First of all Menopause was surely not talked about, and many men thought women who reached that age were becoming just FAT, BITCHY COMPLAINING, NAGS Why? because nobody addressed GOOD HEALTH for women as in eating right, excercise, Hormonal changes NOTHING, My mother who is 70 and my grandmother has many stories of what happened to women in there era.

And NO 40 and 50 yr old women do not look like Brittney Spears IMO they look better.
Cheryl Tiegs-55
Naomi Judd- 58
Raquel Welch-62
Christie Brinkley-50
Bo Derek-48
Goldie Hawn-59
I can go on, the point I am trying to make is Women's Health Issues are FIANLLY being addressed.
