FBI urges vigilance for July 4
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

perhaps, but also consider that its the only thing they can tell the foot soldier LEO people to get them motivated in the least. they have to tell them to "bataan the hatches".
I still see nothing at the NYC bridge and tunnel crossings - and there were many times since 9-11 when there was alot of activity there: constant truck stop and searches, etc. nothing now. I have recently seen some low altitude helicopter activity over the water, leading up to the harbor entrance - but I am assuming that's part of the newly announced coast guard security measures on inbound vessels.
I don't usually follow these threat matrix threads because living in one of the likely target areas for terrorists - I think they make me a bit too paranoid (more than normal) ha...
Now, I am actually worried, after reading Daschole's comments - and I think I need to re-evaluate all my supplies etc - I still have things at the ready, but I have slacked off.
It's hard to live with fear.
we don't talk about the anthrax much on this thread, but FR has some very smart people who do, example here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1165194/posts
You're right, it is hard to live with fear; my wife thinks I need to wean myself off TM ... but I think it's better to be prepared. These devil-spawn will stop at nothing to destroy us.
not that I discount this totally, I do not at all, but I looked at that Daschle comment. Forgive me, but how many times have we heard this same quote:
"there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks."
Seriously, I think they use this same phrase every time. I am not criticizing them, I believe they should give warnings, but they really should stop using this phrase.
THE ATOMIC TRAIN movie on the SCI FI channel . . .
the bomb went off West of Denver.
Now all the modern cars with computer chips won't work. The fallout has started to fall.
Seems fairly realistic in terms of individual and group psychology reactions to the super crisis.
Might be worth watching for some vivid examples of what may lie ahead.
OOOOOOPS forgot to address all:

Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."
I've almost become immune to hearing
"there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks."
They ARE
in a terrrible double bind.
Any phrase they use will take on a similar aura.
If they don't warn and something happens, horror and hell to pay.
If they warn and nothing happens, apathy deepens.
Hard for them to win at all.
Do you have a solution for this catch-22?
What phrases would you use?
they should stop "ranking" these threats. of course, the most recent one is always the "worst since 9-11". because the last time they used that phrase, and nothing materialized, that warning couldn't have been so bad (with 20/20 hindsight). so the next one now has to be "the worst".
all I am saying is that continued use of that phrase plays into the "cry wolf" mantra, that many of the sheeple subscribe to.
What the hell is going in and what does this mean. I am just back from vacation and did hear any of this?????????????????????????????
I was almost paralyzed with fear the first week right after 911 because it affected our family personally - I worry enough but I am glad I have not let it stop me from going to the City numerous times from Oct 2001 on, from going on yearly vacations, doing everything I normally do.....That's not say I don't sometimes wonder "what if"
but I think it's better to be prepared. These devil-spawn will stop at nothing to destroy us.
I agree with you! I do get some peace of mind just knowing I have prepared for some of the what ifs...of course some terrible things they could do (nuclear) you could never escape from.
I will spend tomorrow organizing my supplies thanks to reading this thread and drudge tonight.
I was able to get back here and my breath was nearly taken away by Mossads post. I was in a similar situation in Germany once (please dont ask for details). Let me summarize the way things are fleshing out to date (and please add if Ive missed anything).
1. If AQ threats bear out - Italy and England will get hit 1st, then US.
2. Three month truce period for Europe ends Jul 11-15 depending on the calendar system used.
NOTE on 1&2 - If I read correctly the NEIN(?) analysis suggested that the threat letter/message did not follow the common pattern - Some one please confirm. If so greater doubt arises for these dates
3. The threat is for something big, devastating to hit US. This has been a common theme, with significant discourse on whether AQ has small nukes or the capability to deploy them. General scientific consensus is that it is unlikely that they have any. However, a dirty bomb is not out of the question - mass panic as a goal.
4. Gov't official travel plans have been altered. Trip to Israel canceled
5. Security has been heightened in specific cities - NYC, Philly, Seattle, LA
5a Suspected targeted regions - Michigan and Wisconsin
6. The fleet and F117s are deployed. However, their deployment appears to have been planned to a certain extent. May be a coincidence.
7. Islamist chatter on the 'net warns of getting to safe areas, 30 day supplies of food/water. Uncertain reliability of the sources - could be psyops to get us freaked, knowing that others like us monitor them. However, if nukes were to be used, such a preparation would be common sense.
8. Trains and buses searched - Significant development in east coast towns.
9. Seaports and those many crossing over our borders in the news. Ports are getting a lot more security scrutiny. Diving teams are activily looking for mines, Coast Guard turing away ships as necessary.
10. Dept of Homeland Scty has held a briefing to the public as well as to Congress. Sen Tommy Dachel says that the report (classified) is very serious and could not conceive it being used for political purposes. Very concerning that the Minority leader would make such a statement in the midst of a heated campaign season.
11. Agencies of the government bureaucracy are rumored to be on alert footing (Mossad post). One TM post confirming that the source is relatively reliable.
12. No alerts noted at military facilities. Probably will be none until we go RED.
Precursor attacks in Italy and England. The single most significant and symbolic target would be the Vatican. England would probably be parliament and/or buckingham palace. Our friends there could ID other Sunday targets of interest. As noted in Calpernias anthrax post, mass casualties may not be as necessary as mass panic.
As we are hours away from dawn, Jul 11 in Europe, Im praying that we are reading too much into this and that our friends and allies remain safe. May God grant His grace upon us one more time.
Yeah, a rare, simple creative moment
JP,
We NEED a thread 13.
You know why?
For anyone who is superstitious (ie the jihadis); they know that 13 is considered bad luck. Wouldn't it be fitting to document their bad luck JP on THREAD 13?

INSERT COMMERCIAL BREAK HERE....
Hello "Daleel/eom" how's the weather lately? Any plans you want to talk about? What kind of camera do you and your friends generally use? By the way, just out of curiosity is English your native language and if so, where did you learn Arabic? Do you have the ability to sign on FR as your real God given name and chat without using all the BS aka's and letting us know what's happenig?
END COMMERICAL BREAK HERE...
So JP, I think Thread 13 would be great.
That's my 1.5 cents take on it.
i UNDERSTAND your reasonable perspective.
I do suspect that there are differences in contingencies, evidence, intel which MAY WELL MEAN MORE STARTLING, AWESOME possibilities each time.
One would HOPE that their data collection improved with time.
One could reasonably assume that terrorist activity was worsening, building up over time.
What phrases would you suggest?
How would you warn responsibly yet avoid the 'cry wolf' thing?

Reports: S.C. Atomic Waste Tanks Damaged
Sat Jul 10, 4:39 PM ET
Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Fifteen tanks holding deadly atomic waste at a nuclear weapons complex along the Savannah River have cracked, rusted or leaked, according to federal inspection reports.
Some of the cracks date to the 1950s, when the steel tanks first went into use at the Savannah River Site. But inspection reports say some leaks have been found in the past three years.
In 2001, 92 gallons of radioactive waste leaked through a 40-year-old tank into a containment area. Six leak sites were found on the 750,000-gallon, 24-foot high steel tank.
Secondary containment systems have kept radioactive poisons from getting into groundwater. But a containment system failed in 1960, and the waste leaked into the ground, the reports said.
The 300-square-mile federal weapons complex has 51 steel tanks holding 37 million gallons of waste, including uranium, cesium and plutonium.
Westinghouse Savannah River Co., which runs the site for the U.S. Department of Energy (news - web sites), says some tanks are within 8 to 10 feet of the water table, raising concerns. But Dean Campbell, a spokesman for Westinghouse, says the government does not know of any tanks that currently are leaking.
