Editorial on Georgia Senate Race

Posted on 06/20/2004 12:57:09 PM PDT by hankwilder2

Insulting Voters is No Way to Win Election Published in the Marietta Daily Journal, March 11, 2004

Politics has always been a business that tends to bring out the worst in people, and that trend seems to be accelerating. The race for the seat representing Georgia in the U.S. Senate is a case in point.

That contest for the seat being vacated this fall by retiring Sen. Zell Miller finds three major candidates vying for the Republican nomination for that seat: U.S. Rep. Johnny Isakson of east Cobb, U.S. Rep. Mac Collins of Jackson and former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain. (There are no well-known Democrats seeking the seat).

All three Republicans are good guys and any of the three would make a capable senator, if elected. But we must admit that we are very disappointed in the race run to this point by Collins, who seems to be letting his political "hired guns" call all the shots for him.

As recounted by syndicated columnist Bill Shipp on these pages this past Sunday, Collins' operatives have made Isakson the butt of a smear campaign with few precedents in modern Georgia history. Shipp reported that the Collins campaign has accused the staunchly conservative Isakson of everything from being the voting twin of Democratic liberals Dick Gephardt and Barney Frank to being pro-abortion and wanting to go easy on child molesters. There's a well-known word to describe such manure, but we can't print it in a family newspaper.

We suspect that Georgians - and especially Cobb Countians - who have followed Isakson's career during the past three decades are repulsed by the baseless accusations being spread by the Collins crowd. And we suspect that Collins' tactics will result in a backlash against him.

Johnny Isakson, after all, is one of the architects of the modern-day Republican Party in Georgia and has done stalwart service for his state as a legislator in Atlanta and Washington and as chairman of the state school board. His reputation for honesty and integrity has few equals. So the kind of mean-spirited politics being waged on Collins' behalf not only are unlikely to work, they're an insult to the intelligence of any Georgian who pays even minimal attention to politics.

We're all in favor of vigorous debate on the issues, and there's no question that politics has always been and will always be a rough-and-tumble avocation. But Mac Collins should know by now that you don't win elections by insulting the voters.

Is this race sewn-up for the G.O.P.? Georgia is this Englishman's favourite state, and even a Democrat like Senator Miller (and what are the chances of getting another one like him?) is not as good as a nice sound conservative Republican.

Don't know about the GOP having a lock on the seat but I'm voting for Herman Cain who seems to be the perfect Senate candidate: Republican, articulate and unashamedly conservative. He would transform the Senate by demolishing all the Democratic insinuations that conservative Republican = racist.

Every Georgia FReeper needs to make sure that Cain wins, so we don't get another RINO (Ikason) in the senate.

Isakson has been in the House seince he won a special election for Newt Gingrich's seat when Gingrich resigned. I cannot think of a single thing he has done - either good or bad. He's a "do-nothing but collect pay" politician. He's no leader. That is the record he is running on, and I don't see how he feels that qualifies him for the Senate.

Georgia GOP primary voters have an opportuntiy to nominate a truly outstanding African-American conservative who also IMHO is the best of the three running. It will give lie to the notion that the only home for thinking blacks is the liberal plantation in the Democratic Party.

You obviously do not pay very close attention to what goes on in Washington.Next to Lender Isakson is probably the Ga. delegation member with the most influence with Hasert and the leadership. He is a major player on the Transportation committee which is very important to Georgia's economy. He lead the floor fight to restore Georgia's fair share of the hwy funds.

If you watch the house debates you will see he is among the 10 or so congressmen who alternate manning the speakers chair. This is strong for a 2 term congressman.

As the editorial says deal with facts don't use insults. All 3 candidates are good men.Collins and Isakson have served us well in the house and both have records to be proud of.

The worst reason in the world to vote for Herman Cain is that he is black and that he will neutralize racist charges against the GOP. That won't happen; he'll just be called an Uncle Tom. The best reason to vote for him is that he is smart, articulate, and honestly conservative.

Herman Cain, Georgia's next United States Senator

Taking anything for granted in Georgia politics is a mistake. Any poll will tell you the state is still very closely divided. Remember when everyone said Barnes couldn't be beat a mere two years ago?

Isakson is the only candidate who can guarantee us a win. A vote for Cain or Collins in the primary is a vote for Majette in the general.

I'll see if I can't manage to take & post a picture of my neighbor's Cain signs after the Sun comes up today.

Collins & Isakson aren't bad guys- they just aren't Herman Cain.

... he'll just be called an Uncle Tom.

The Democrats will do that anyway. They always do. Mr. Cain can handle whatever they throw at him without having to suffer in silence as Justice Clarence Thomas has had to do.

Bingo. Majette is an opportunistic newbie whose politics have turned out to be Cynthia Mckinney's without the overt racism, and who should have proven she can get reelected as a congresswoman before trying for the Senate. If Majette is the best the Dems can come up with for the GA Senate, Cain will clean their clocks. The other two would likely win as well, but with black crossover voters Cain could pull off a historic landslide.

Herman Cain is both a true political and cultural conservative and a man who has been-there-done-that in the real world of business, where one's success or failure depends on one's performance in real world terms.

Consequently, Mr. Cain has both my vote and my get-out-the-vote efforts. I am doing what I can to swing Brooks County firmly for Mr. Cain, in coordination with his staff in his Valdosta campaign HQ.

so there.

The best reason to vote for Herman Cain is when the clintons were pushing the nationalized health care thing.Herman Cain absolutley DESTROYED bill clinton in a public debate. I just wish I had that on tape.

A freeper with an agenda .... now, that would be a surprise!

Seriously, though, we all have viewpoints and think we have good justifications for them, so what's wrong with sharing them online? I thought that was what Free Republic was all about.
