That is a realistic theory. ABC newsradio reported this morning that in some of the raids that they had come across a handbook written by one of the head al Qaeda Lts. and if gave instructions on how to handle the hostage taking and negotiations. Things listed. Always hood the hostage. Do not lessen demands. If negotiations do not look to be moving as al qaeda wants...kill the hostage.
Do not extend the dead line....AND there was somthing mentioned about killing the hostage regardless of whether demands are met or not.

It's certainly possible, no way to be sure though... he was certainly a dead-man as as we saw the first videos of his capture, no matter how you cut it.
I was going to make a similar point.
This morning, right after President Bush finished speaking, Fox went straight to a Walmart parking lot in Texas where there was a standoff involving a gunman and police.
It got me thinking about the crimes committed here and how we usually can't stop them from happening ahead of time. But there is no way anyone can think that GWB subscribes to the "treat terrorism as a crime" angle. No way.
If anyone thinks he doesn't realize more than we do what these people have in mind, they can guess again.

At heart, they are seething "girly men".
At some point we probably should take out the media outlets that permit them to spread the news of their terror. If they could get NO news coverage for their actions the actions would lose a lot of their attraction for them. I know it's probably not possible, but I think denying them ANY way to brag about their 'victories' would slow them down.
They were probable playing up the idea that he liked the middle east and thought about becoming a Muslim etc. in the hope that it might delay or prevent his execution.
