Zarqawi to Bin Laden: US Winning in Iraq
Al Qaida's most dangerous operative, Abu Musab al Zarqawi, has personally warned terror kingpin Osama bin Laden that his troops are under intensifying pressure from U.S. forces in Iraq and prospects for a terrorist victory look bleak.
A purported letter from Zarqawi to bin Laden, posted to Islamic web sites Monday night, complains that al Qaida fighters in Iraq are being "squeezed" by U.S.-led coalition forces, the Associated Press said.
"The space of movement is starting to get smaller," Zarqawi warned. "The [U.S.] grip is starting to be tightened on the holy warriors' necks and, with the spread of soldiers and police, the future is becoming frightening."
The letter said that Iraqi insurgents would combat the U.S.'s increasing effectiveness by intensify attacks on Iraqi soldiers and police who are seen as collaborators with the U.S.-backed forces.
Al Zarqawi is believed by U.S. intelligence to be behind many of the most significant attacks against U.S. and western interests in recent months, including the Madrid train bombings, a foiled chem bomb plot that experts say would have killed 80,000 Jordanians and the beheading of U.S. contractor Nicholas Berg.

They're just now figuring this out?
More importantly, I thought there was no connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq.
I really question the authenticity of this.
Why don't you explain why you can't figure this out? This is the truth. Or would rather believe the talking heads of CBS, CNN, etc.
What would you say would motivate the publication of such a letter, authentic or not?
This is old news about being squeezed, it was on a CD seized from a courier many months ago the web site is just repeating old news and adding a bit of new news.
Zarqawi sounds contrite and circumspect. Wonder why? Maybe it's because the jihadists never measure up when they are faced head-on. They are much more adept at launching sneak attacks on women and children.
See PM
Short Term:
The US, Coalition forces and Iraqis in the ICDC, NIA and IPs will have to push hard for security. Lots of Guards, Check points, searches and so fourth. People will be annoyed and bothered by the "Occupation" which in reality at this point is just the venting of frustration that is even against Iraqi forces conducting these operations.
Long Term:
The building of a real Iraqi Government (Partially operational), security forces and revitalization of the Iraqi economy and infrastructure combined with unprecedented access to information via satalite TV, radio or news papers will change the perception within Iraq. Long term the support for these terrorists will get squeezed more and more.
They know this! That's why they TARGET the new government officials (Several killed just recently). That's why they target the Iraqi security forces as they do. Iraq, if it succeeds as a democratic republic that is self sustaining will by vertue of "What" it is, oppose these groups. They are doing all they can to destabilize Iraq and the sensationalistic media is doing all it can to help them (Abu Garhib, lack of all success stories in the media). It is sad to see how are own media has become an unpaid unofficial press agent of the terrorists. All in the name of ratings.

I think that should be self evident.
To make us feel better would be the first thing that comes to mind so we stay the course.
CIA?
It's not obvious, and I'm reticent to believe our gov't would knowingly release false information. I guess I've yet to reach that level of cynicism. All this is obviously speculation on our part...
This almost identical letter was on a CD found many months ago.

AL-ZARQAWI Says U.S. grip "tightens."
June 15, 2004 -- CAIRO, Egypt A leader of militants in Iraq has purportedly written to Osama bin Laden, saying his fighters are being squeezed by U.S.-led coalition troops, according to a statement posted yesterday on Islamic Web sites.
Re#9 What you said. My only difference is the Clymers are not doing it for ratings, they are doing it for politics. I read that the NY Times ran the A-G prison story front page for 28 straight days. The last time they did that: Watergate....
Build up a story of that they're embattled and on the verge of collapse. Publish a letter laced with supplications to the demon they worship, then blow up a school bus or something and declare it a great victory. The new yawk times will report the triumph of the "insurgency" rising phoenix-like, etc.
Something nasty could be coming our way. It's a set up.
Different letter! According to Fox News this A.M.
Reportedly, the Zarqawi memo to bin Laden was found on a CD seized by the Kurds during a raid on an al Qaeda safe house. You can read a translation here.Clarification: Iraq-Al-Zarqawi story
A comparison subsequently showed that the purported letter from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was the same text intercepted and released in February by the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
The text refers to insurgents' efforts to seize control of Iraq ''four months before the formation of the promised Iraqi government ....'' This appears to be a reference to the coalition's turnover of control planned June 30 rather than to Iraqi national elections in January 2005.
Clearly we have the advantage in sheer military strength and prowess. In that sense the letter seems plausible. It's the covert ops where they may have an edge - as someone said earlier, they're prone to sneak suicide attacks on women and children.
Look for these SOB's to pull out all the stops in the September October time frame running up to the election. Ala TET. Not here at home, over in Iraq. THEY KNOW they can't win on the battlefield but they can win at our ballot box.
Kerry helped teach them how with his post Vietman "service".
