LIVE THREAD--Reagan State Funeral Ceremony: Lying in State at the Rotunda (6/11/04)
THAT is when it hits me the worst.
WE GOT IT.............WE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG........WE DO NOT LAMENT THE PASSING OF COMMUNISM.......WE DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO MORAL EQUIVALENCE......WE DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO SITUATIONAL ETHICS........SOMETIMES WE FAIL, BUT WE PICK OURSELVES UP AND TRY AGAIN.
I wasn't old enought to vote for Reagan either time, and my family wasn't much "into" politics. But I've been struck, too, by how similar the two men are with their determination to do what is "right", their faith, how much they got criticized, and so on.
And you're right that the Pres. knows it's not "all about him" I was so impressed by their visit to the Capitol; so short, but obviously meaningful. The people looked so surprised, yet honored, that they were there. But the Pres. and Laura were there and gone so fast I bet some of the people there didn't even realize who had been in and out so fast. I'm NOT criticizing the length of their visit; I thought it was perfect and another example of knowing it isn't "all about them".
I wasn't expecting "Going Home"...but I should have! It was perfect, like everything else has been this week...the planning as well as carrying it all out was just impeccable. I was afraid for the pall-bearers coming out of the Capitol this morning...very treacherous set of stairs there, but I should have had more faith in them!
(music note: I seem to remember that "Going Home" is actually the "Largo" movement from Dvorak's "New World Symphony"...someone please correct if that's wrong...and thanks to all you posters and JimRob for this forum for information and comforting conversation!!)
The money shot for history is going to be when the soldier kneels and gives it to Nancy. Chris Wallace indicated it would be very moving - as if we couldn't figure that out on our own ;-)
He was there. I saw him listening intently to the eulogies.
Yes, after sharing him with the world for days they're very gracious to allow us to be at this last and very personal service.
***For you opera buffs - how does the guy today compare to the Three Tenors?
I thought he was fabulous***
I did, too! Heard that he had worked with Nancy somehow in the area of Alzheimer's support or research. He'd told her that if there was ever anything he could do for her, to ask, and then he got the call this week to sing at the service.
Bill Keller, the Times' editor, said in the New York Observer this week that he hadn't heard a single reader complaint about the Reagan coverage.
****
Sounds like he is good at 'Clintonspeak."
Letters to the Editor and letters the public editor don't count?
Bingo! And worth remembering. If anyone should pose that question, your reply should be the standard answer!
I thought Ronan was absolutely fantastic. I am going to buy one of the Irish Tenors CD's today.
I was not online during the service because I wanted to give it my full attention. I was moved to tears & laughter more than once. This was a beautiful and heartwarming ceremony.
Actually, I believe the ship is still enroute around South America and not expected to reach home port until mid-July. The captain must have been flown up for this occasion.
I looked for Kerry, but never saw him. Did he come?
...and I love the fact that they had Karl Rove seated right behind algore...
LOLOL.......just love it.....using that old liberal dirty trick. People are saying.............
Don't let it annoy you..it will backfire..like the Wellstone service..it will remind a lot of Reagan Dems why they voted for him..
Thanks for the words. Perfect choice of optimistic music to send President Reagan home to California.
California here he comes! Right back where he started from.... well, politically at least!
Trace Gallaer, FNC, just said that neither Kirk Douglas nor Charlton Heston will be able to attend the service ar the library, had to cancel for health reasons.
Did you see the thread where in the Screen ASctors Guild offices, there is NOP mention, or pic of Reagan?
