OK, let me take a swing at the correct answer:

Because the military was told not to kill him.

Perhaps only if Sadr himself was firing into one of our platoon of men would he be shot.

In looking back over the entire Iraq campaign I believe there was a strategy to prevent Iraqi casualties as well as our own. I was sort of hoping for a little more discipline than that being put on the mis-behaving Baa'thists.

Unless there's a sense of defeat among the Baa'thists their hatred will rise again to bite us in the butt.

Reuters reporters had earlier seen soldiers dragging away the bodies of several troops from the smoking wreckage of a vehicle destroyed by an explosion on a main highway.

They got a tip from Sadr to be there with cameras, but were a little late arriving. [sarc]

Again I ask, why are they driving Humvee's in dangerous areas and getting soldiers killed when they could be driving these and saving lives?

Surely it's not so they can look "less military" when patrolling civilian streets. It better not be.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BAGHDAD, Iraq  — Five U.S. soldiers were killed and five wounded on Friday when their vehicles were attacked in east Baghdad, the U.S. military said.






The 10 soldiers were members of Task Force Baghdad (search), which is made up primarily of the Texas-based 1st Cavalry Division (search), said division spokesman Army Lt. Col. James Hutton.


The vehicles came under attack shortly after 1 p.m. on Palestine Street near the Shiite district of Sadr City (search). Video from Associated Press Television News showed the burning wreckage of a Humvee (search) and a huge plume of black smoke rising from the mangled vehicle."
