That is a very good question. I remember reading about how some viruses and bacterias thrive in cold weather and others thrive in hot weather. Some are killed in coldness and others die in heat. Some are not greatly affected by either.
When we wash our kitchens, bathrooms, etc., we use hot water and a cleaning agent to help kill germs (supposedly this works but I have seen too many investigative specials that show we just move the germs around!). Yet operating rooms are kept frigid to ward off the germination of bacteria.

Vancouver, Washington-AP -- Five tank cars on a freight train have derailed in an area of homes and factories in Vancouver, Washington.
A spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe says one of three cars that tipped over leaked a flammable liquid.

This is public information and used by the media. We usually get this info sent out from the fire by 2100 hrs in a 209 form and it is summarized in the Situation Report for the next day. Then sometimes we are tired and/or screwed up and it is a day late. The Report is not hard to understand, but if any jargon shows up, let me know and I can give my take on it. Particular attention should be paid to the phrase 'extreme fire behavior'. That means 'hard times arising' or TSHTF (or we are expecting it to). The safety messages, at the end of the Report(today it is about hydration) are usually relevant.

This Travel Warning is being issued to remind Americans of continued concerns about the security situation in Somalia and to clarify registration procedures. This supersedes the Travel Warning of June 2, 2004.
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all travel to Somalia, including the self proclaimed “independent Republic of Somaliland”. Inter-clan and inter-factional fighting can flare up with little warning, and kidnapping, murder, and other threats to U.S. citizens and other foreigners can occur unpredictably in many regions. There is no U.S. Embassy or other U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia.
There have been attacks against foreigners in the self-declared "Republic of Somaliland" in northern Somalia. The Sanaag and Sool Regions in eastern Somaliland, bordering on Puntland (northeastern Somalia), are subject to insecurity due to potential inter-clan fighting. There were several fatal attacks against international relief workers, including Westerners, throughout Somalia and Somaliland in late 2003 and early 2004. In addition, serious fighting has occurred in the Mogadishu area, the Puntland region in northern Somalia, and the districts of Gedo and Bay (especially the vicinity of Baidoa) in the south. Territorial control in the Mogadishu area is divided among numerous groups; lines of control are unclear and frequently shift, making movement within this area extremely hazardous.
U.S. citizens are urged to use caution when sailing near the coast of Somalia. Merchant vessels, fishing boats and recreational craft alike risk seizure and their crews being held for ransom, especially in the waters near the Horn of Africa and the Kenyan border.
The U.S. Government cannot provide services to U.S. citizens in Somalia. U.S. citizens who plan to travel to Somalia despite this Travel Warning are urged to register and obtain updated information on travel and security from the U.S. Embassies in neighboring countries. Travelers to the self-declared “Republic of Somaliland” should register with the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, and travelers to Puntland or southern Somalia should register with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.

NEW YORK -- Police held an anti-terrorism drill at Rockefeller Center Monday night, NewsChannel 4 reported.
Police said they have been having such drills often, especially with the Republican National Convention coming to town this summer.
Several hundred officers took part in the drill.
Another emergency drill will be held Tuesday at the Indian Point Nuclear Plant in Buchanan, authorities said.
The drill, unlike others held at the plant that focused on the possibility of radiation release, will instead concentrate on a possible terrorist attack.
Plant officials said the drill will use a new computer program that will provide a clearer picture of how long it takes to move people out of the area.

Just heard a news report on Philadelphia's channel 10 news....but I cannot find the story yet on their web-site or anywhere.
But the story is about a suspicious "Middle Eastern" looking man who was arrested yesterday (June 7th) at the Philadelphia airport with a silver "gunlike" object. He had thousands of dollars in 100 dollar bills, that he said were from a recent art deal. He had numerous types of passports, drivers licenses etc. The police detained him for a few hours, and then LET HIM GO!!!!! I will keep looking to find the story on the net. Every week and almost every day there are strange occurances in the Philly/NJ/NY area.
Regarding the drill in NY....I would think that they would have announced the drill "prior" to having several hundred officers taking part in the drill on Monday evening. I wonder if it was really a drill, or something happened that they are now reporting as a drill after the fact.
It seems that these drills are lining up too easily with this weeks....G8 summit, Venus transit, etc.

TEHERAN SOME 2,000 Iranians, one as young as seven, have signed up with a shadowy Islamic group to carry out suicide bombings in Iraq and Israel, a Teheran newspaper said yesterday.
'So far, 2,000 people have registered,' group spokesman Mohammad Samadi told the reformist newspaper Shargh.
'Twenty-five per cent are under 18 years, 55 per cent are between 18 and 40, and the rest are 40 to 80,' said Mr Samadi of the Committee for the Commemoration of Martyrs of the World Islamic Movement. 'The youngest is a seven-year-old child.'
The group launched its recruitment drive late last month, taking names and telephone numbers of volunteers after the main weekly Muslim prayers on Fridays.
The action was intended to 'show our friends in Iraq and all other Muslims that we are ready to give our lives to defend our honour and Islam's', Mr Samadi said then, pointing to US military operations in the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, which are revered by Shi'ites in Iran as well as Iraq.

Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said militants had been planning more attacks as police swooped as part of an operation across Europe. He said the swoop was aimed at a group "close to al Qaeda."........
Did we decide not to invite Saudi Arabia and Egypt or did they decide not to come -- like the 1000's of Middle Easterners who allegedly decided not to show up for work in NYC on the morning of 09.11.01 (or is that an urban legend?)
