Royston firm to help the US fight terrorist threat in the air
By Ben Fountain, 21 May 2004, viewed 43 times, emailed 5 times

Patrolling the skies over the United States with Primagraphics technology on board

Royston based aerospace innovator, Primagraphics’ technology could soon be used by US authorities to combat terrorism in America’s skies.

The company, which was recently acquired subject to certain conditions by US company, Curtiss-Wright Corporation, is understood to be close to signing a multi-million pound contract with the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA runs the air traffic control system in the US and is currently overhauling its technology to make it ‘terrorist-proof’ - the ‘blueprint for the national airspace system modernisation.’

As well as modernising air traffic control architecture to keep pace with anticipated increases in air travel in the US, a key element of the project is to protect the country’s national security.

In particular, the FAA is keen to roll-out a tamper-proof system for tracking aircraft in American air-space. Primagraphics’ primary radar technology could become an essential element in the FAA’s anti-terror aircraft surveillance system as it allows no scope for hijacked aircraft to ‘hide’ from air traffic control’s radar screens.

The planes used in the September 11 attacks effectively became invisible to US ATC systems, as the transponders fitted to the aircraft to keep track of them were switched off by the terrorist attackers.

Thanks for checking it out. That's an uproariously funny thread, but probably worth checking out the inital claim.

Work day is over. Heading out to do my Mom duties.

Back tonight, hopefully.

Yes, they surely are. Two fears:
- some of these probes will be used as a diversion
- too many of these incidents and they will stop being taken seriously

Terrorist threats make control of Internet more important - UN ICT Task Force Official

Shanghai. (Interfax China) - The threat of terrorism has made it more important for nations to control the flow of information through the Internet, United Nations ICT Task Force Deputy Executive Coordinator Sergei Kambalov told Interfax during an interview at the 4th Annual Forum for City Informatization in the Asia Pacific Region (CIAPR), held in Shanghai.

The UN ICT Task Force will host a special meeting during the CIAPR this week to discuss Internet governance in the Asia Pacific region, during which delegates from countries in the region will discuss taxation, the digital divide and censorship of the internet. Kambalov believed it was also possible that delegates would discuss China's policies for controlling the flow of information over the Internet.

On that note, The local Islamic Center had a huge crowd today. I live 3 blocks away and watch it every time I go by, which is 5 or 6 times a day, at least.

The parking lot was full to overflowing, I've never seen that before.

I've never seen this many cars there, is it another holiday for them?

They all looked very happy.

I thought us old timer stallwarts around here

us dyed-in-the-wool birds of rare plumage

had asbestos suits layered between quadruple layers of tinfoil on both sides with helmets and gloves and boots to match!!!

Sigh.

Watchmen, prophets, the super sensitive and the paranoid . . . Thank God for early warning critters!

FBI CHECKING TRUCKS COMING INTO CITY

May 21ST, 2004

Police are taking a closer look at trucks entering New York City after warnings from the FBI.

The Feds say that terrorists may use truck bombs to attack high-profile targets.

Officers from the NYPD as well as the Port Authority have been stationed at bridges and tunnels.

Officials say they will also be pulling over trucks already in the city if they look suspicious.

An FBI spokesman says there is no specific information about an imminent threat nor anything specific to New York.

Re # 1568

Not sure if this is a muslim holiday or not. Any TM'ers out there know if this is a muslim holiday?

The guys in the Ryder truck were very happy as well. I don't like the picture these connected dots are beginning to reveal.

Man I hope this is nothing. Getting worried here.

STAR TELEGRAM 4MAY2004

But in general, most analysts agree, none of the major carriers has a guaranteed future. They have all piled on such an enormous amount of debt that any shock to the system -- an economic downturn or domestic terrorism, for example -- could quickly send all six into bankruptcy.

"They're all so fragile right now," Jenkins said, "that the slightest nudge could put them all underwater."

American Airlines

Status: After more than a year of aggressive cost cutting, which included $1.8 billion in employee concessions, American has narrowed its losses. But the Fort Worth-based carrier is still losing money and hasn't been able to improve its revenues.

Strategy: American's management is working mightily to integrate cost cutting into the airline's culture and engage employees in the fight to slim down. It has been building a financial safety net with various debt offerings and is boosting its international presence, particularly in Asia.
