Oregon Man Arrested in Spain Bombings Probe

WASHINGTON  — FBI agents arrested a Portland, Ore., man Thursday as part of the investigation into the deadly train bombings in Spain, federal officials said.

Brandon Bieri Mayfield, a U.S. citizen, was taken into custody on a material witness warrant, said a senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The arrest, first reported in Newsweek, is the first known in the United States with connections to the March 11 bombings in Madrid.

The FBI also searched his home, which he shares with his wife, the official said.

From what I've found in Google, Bieri seems to be mostly a German name.

Thanks for the pings, Gramps and Meek. I heard about this on the radio while I was babysitting today. Between this story, Dianne Linn (Multomah County Commissioner) apologizing for the way she treated Portland as her own little fifedom, and Neil Goldschmidt retiring from public life because of a little sex problem that will break next week, it has been a big news day in Portland.

Thanks for your report on the possibility of more arrests, Oorang. Ya' kinda had to know that was coming. The mosque you mentioned is probably the one in SW Portland, and is considered the most radical in the USA. I believe it's the Portland Seven's mosque.

Since they searched the mosque he attended perhaps he provided the bag to someone (at the mosque) going to Spain and that is how his fingerprints were on it.

Just got home. I haven't read through the whole thread to see if anyone else has reported this stuff...anyhow...

KPAM radio interviewed Michael Isikoff, of Newsweek, who has been working on this story.

He said that this guy was "detained," not arrested, by the FBI as a material witness because his fingerprints were apparently found on a bag containing bomb-making materials in the debris of the Madrid bombing.

This guy is a Muslim convert, who sometimes attends the Bilal mosque in Beaverton. He was either the lawyer or one of the lawyers defending Jeffrey Battle, one of the Portland 7.

There are lots of reporters camped out at this guy's house right now, and his wife is supposedly going to make a statement at any time.

They tried to interview Mayfield's wife. She was standing in the doorway of their house trying to cut off the news reporter and close the door. She was caucasian (yes, I profile) American (no accent) and wearing some sort of hair covering. Not like the regular muslim female head covering but a head/hair covering non the less.

She said "he didn't do anything wrong, ask anyone who knows him, he wouldn't do this; my lawyer told me not to say anything".

Then they interviewed a neighbor. Elderly woman. "We had them over to dinner recently and my husband said grace and he (Mayfield) said Amen at the end of grace so I don't think he would be involved with anything like this".

Seriously. I'm not making this up. It was on the news (katu again).
