NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. troops have attacked Shi'ite militia forces around the Iraqi holy city of Najaf, seizing the local governor's offices and killing 41 fighters, a senior official in the U.S. occupation authority has told Reuters.

Reuters correspondents at the scene on Thursday saw and heard fierce battles in and around Najaf and the nearby town of Kufa. One saw U.S. tanks at the governor's building on Najaf's main street, several kilometres (miles) from Shi'ite Islam's holiest shrines.

It was the boldest move yet against an insurgency launched a month ago...

This story further solidifies my beliefe the decision to turn Fallujah over to a ba'athist general was more of a strategic move than a political move.

Good point. Plus if they get Al-Saydr in Najaf it may soften Fallujah.

It's about time. They need to be prepared to take out these so-called holy shrines. Afterwards they should just say, "what a shame that Sadr made this necessary".

We're either winning or losing; no middle ground in battle.

God bless and protect our fighting forces.

Something else to think about... Grand Ayatollah Sistani is remaining quiet so far.....so that tells me we have his blessing for this move on the Sadr forces.

What I think we will see is us taking out Sadr's shock troops.....and the Ayatollah and the other clerics seizing Sadr himself.

Bush said yesterday...."the Iraqis will handle Sadr..."

We wouldn't want to capture al Sadr - you don't take roaches prisoner, you stomp 'em!

You take "prisoners" when you have the reasonable expectation that, after the conflict is over, your prisoners will no longer be a physical threat.

Roaches and Islamists can't be rehabilitated.
