US marines pressing an offensive in this Iraqi town west of Baghdad bombed a mosque in the center of the town Wednesday and killed up to 40 insurgents inside, a marine officer said.
The attack came from a jet aircraft at a high angle to minimize the impact, the officer said.
"We wanted to kill the people inside," said Lieutenant Colonel Brennan Byrne.

"His report was that the Marines tried everything they could before they bombed it. They had been fired on from both and had suffered several injuries"
Once they are involved in attacks from a mosque, the mosque becomes history. It can be no other way. Once they find out that they can't hit us and run into a mosque without getting smeared, they won't be as eager to try it.

Sadr will get his eventually by one of the other clerics, the council realizes this violence could hold up the transition date and trying to save it IMO.

Kerry is in freefall and has been since day one, hell the entire democratic party has been this entire election cycle.
THere are many theories that Hillary will step up at the convention... don't know how credible it is, but if Kerry remains the nominee, he'll make McGovern's defeat look like a good showing.

I recall that being posted during the beginning of the march on Baghdad. Thanks EV

Kerry is in freefall You must not be paying attention to the polls. Kerry is leading, and seems to be extending his lead. There has been a whole lot of bad news for Bush the past couple of weeks. At this point in time, it certainly looks like Kerry could win. There is alot of time left to go certainly, but don't discount Kerry's chances. His chances are good, quite a bit better than you would care to believe.

Commenting on your observations of last night's Larry King.
I saw only a bit, but do they have a call screener or not?
They allowed a woman caller on who asserted she knew a guy who worked in the towers and said that Monday 9/10 one of the buildings was cordoned off and bomb-sniffing dogs were there, then she demanded of Hughes if in fact the government did not have a heads up.
Karen said flatly that they did not, that she'd never heard of such a thing---she pointed out the Mayor Guiliani and all of the police involved, not to mention other workers would be witnesses and would come forward if that had happened. Then she said she did not believe the caller. Larry said he'd never heard of that before, either (duh--of course not).
I was amazed they would let a nutcase like that on the air to spew such a thought that of course some in the audience would file away as the truth of the matter, facts be damned. Then I remembered I was watching CNN and clicked away.

There are Christians in name only and Muslims in name only and every other religion out there. None are considered true followers of the religion by true followers of the respective religions, they are looked down upon. Saying you are one does not make you one. Actions speak louder than words sometimes.

AP BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Muqtada al-Sadr, the firebrand anti-U.S. Shiite Muslim cleric, warned the United States on Wednesday that Iraq would become another Vietnam-like conflict if Washington did not transfer power to "honest Iraqis." The cleric -- whose militia followers have battled coalition and Iraqi security forces across the country for days -- accused members of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council of being "collaborators" and said "they do not represent the Iraqi people." "I call upon the American people to stand beside their brethren, the Iraqi people, who are suffering an injustice by your rulers and the occupying army,...

Exactly! When they were celebrating on the bridge last week with the 4 citizens who were slaughtered, we should have leveled them all, right then and there. Of course, the world would have threw a fit because citizens would have been killed in the attack, but hell. Crank it up a notch. The old generals need to quit playing war games.
To: cyncooper
That's ludicrous.
Even if it wasn't, what good is it if you think plain old bombs are planted - vs planes incoming from 400 mi away? Who'da thought?
I hate all this blame-some1-and-make-them-pay nonsense. There is only 1 set of people to blame: the Islamonuts who planned and performed the whole thing.

I'm sure they have a call screener although I've never phoned in to Larry. Yes, I heard that bit about the bomb sniffing dogs...it was summarily dismissed. I watched it in fits and starts...mostly fits. I saw another post in which Larry King said Ted Kennedy delivered a "blistering attack" on the administration. Larry and Ted, pajama buddies.

Actions DO speak louder than words, I agree. I call into question the definition of a "true follower" of any religion. There are plenty of true christians that think catholics are evil baby eaters, and Mormons crackpot inbreeders. The shiites (sp?) and the sunis are blowing each other up right now; if you ask either side if a member of the other side is a true follower, I suspect you'd get a fair number of "no" answers. Considering how there's no supreme head of the Islamic faith (at least, I don't think there is) this is understandable. There's also no such head for the Christians. The KKK follows a wacky hodge-podge of christianity too, and I'm sure they consider themselves the only true christians. I think its a lot easier not to worry too much about the distinctions people make about who's "true" or not, and as you said, focus on their actions. If you see someone burning an American flag while shooting an ak-47 in the air, I say kill them, muslim or not.
To: HamiltonJay
I dunno. The latest Rasmussen poll on another thread looks bad for Bush. Kerry by 6. I am not overly optimistic here.
