For the life of me I do not understand how, why this unfinished war is considered a victory.

Because George W. Bush told us so -- about eleven months ago. Don't you remember that silly charade on the deck of the aircraft carrier?

Victory is about a whole lot more than "saving face." Victory and saving lives are not mutually exclusive. I fully believe that our skilled commanders on the ground are evaluating the situation and changing tactics as we speak.

Standing on street corners and engaging the enemy with small arms is clearly not the answer. Tanks are a start.

I do however, wholeheartedly agree that losing lives because we are avoiding putting the smackdown on the enemy for the sake of appearances is BS. If the vast majority of Iraqis are truly for us, making an EXTREMELY harsh example of a select few shouldn't hurt us too badly.

Al-Sadr knows that we will take him out. The problem is that he keeps hiding in mosques because he knows we can't be politically correct and go in and get him.

Hussein killed part of his family which doesn't lead for any understanding why he is against being liberated.

He needs to be taken out by whatever means necessary (along with his brainwashed supporters if they'd like).

Actually, I'm probably more conservative than about 95% of the people on this site. I said at the time of that idiotic P.R. stunt that it would be remembered as a colossal political blunder if U.S. continued to incur casualties for long afterward.

Like I said before -- I hate being right about these things.

The military objective #1 was to remove the Baathist regime in Iraq. This objective was accomplished. I have no problems calling it a victory.
Objective #2 is to install a regime in Iraq which is: (a) not hostile to the US, (b) somewhat better in running the country that other Arab rulers, (c) is stable enough to avoid a civil war.
This is still possible to accomplish.

It makes all the sense in the world. Anyone who thought the U.S. would be welcomed by these people with open arms was terribly naive. The attitude of most Iraqis can probably be summed up as follows:

"Thanks for getting rid of Saddam Hussein. Now get the f#&* out of here."

In every war, there are always two stages to the victory...the pitched battle and the aftermath.

Here's the absolute truth about the much maligned carrier landing. The President had an absolute right to do it and the sailors on board loved it and him for doing it. Ditto for the Thanksgiving day surprise in Baghdad. Stroll up to an ABE or ABH on that ship and make a snide comment about their "mission accomplished" being a charade to them and see what it gets you.

For thousands of years the military victory was followed by rape, pillage, and apparently if you really pissed the Romans off, salt being plowed into your fields.

We've come a long way since then (despite Alberta's tired "let's just incinerate 25M" garbage) but humane treatment of the losers, while clearly the right thing to do, is often much more difficult.

But make no mistake this war is a victory (tanks in the losers capital and their leader in jail is a pretty good indicator) and will be a victory. We are NOT the Spanish. No doubt, measures need to be taken to avoid more of today's losses but I also have no doubt that they will be made and we will prevail. The only thing that will prevent this is going weak kneed for fear of offending anyone with the measures we take to protect ourselves and the people of Iraq.

Ya just gotta love a smug prescient pundit from the Great White North, O' Canada.

I guess you pull in 9-lbers when you fly fish, too.

Well, thanks anyway for following our troubles **I note that Canada has not sent so much as DOUGHNUTS to Iraq*** and hope your book deal goes swimmingly.

verybdog I think that perhaps you read my post or my meaning incorrectly or you posted to the wrong freeper. I never posted or meant defeat could be humiliating.

I definitely would not post, say or think anything like that. For one my son just got back from doing his year in Iraq and probably will have to go back in a few months. And I also have a stepson who is there at the present. And every male and female member of the coalition I consider as if they were my own.

I am one that never have and never will politicize the lives of our troops. You've got the wrong person. So run along and jump on someone else.

I would ask that some stop, take a deep breath, and realize that we only mostly see every negative thing possible, and none of the positives that are occurring.

If George Bush doesn't bring them home by mid-summer, then John Kerry will bring them home in January.

Then I do believe this would be a cause for a civil war amd uprising in this country and unfortunately, we are not too damned far from that at this moment in time.

My "let's just incinerate 25 million Iraqis" comment was intended to be sarcastic -- I should have been more clear about that.

You seem to overestimate the attention span of the U.S. public. This administration can't possibly lay the groundwork for a long-term solution in Iraq -- because we have no idea if this administration is going to be around to see it to fruition (how soon we forget that George H. W. Bush was on the unemployment line so soon after "victory" in Gulf War I). Make no mistake about it -- this administration made a gross miscalculation in this war. The timing of the war was purely political -- they really expected to have everything cleaned up (at least insofar as that would be possible) before the situation in Iraq could become a political issue in this campaign.

Please get a grip.

As far as I was concerned, the "war on terror" officially ended when the same U.S. Congress that couldn't decide how much funding to provide for the war effort in Iraq voted nearly unanimously to pass a bill protecting the U.S. public from f#&*ing telemarketers.

If that didn't prompt an uprising in this country (actually, it was quite the contrary -- I was shocked to see how many people right here on this site even considered the damn thing an issue worthy of discussion), then nothing will.

Gather your wits. You're going wobbly. This is a war, still.

I appreciate your use of the expression "going wobbly". Maggie did always have a way with words, however I'm of the opinion that B-1's "wobblieness" gave America the best opportunity to achieve a long term solid business relationship with most of the important nations in the ME.

A shame that the same boilerroomers spiders who chucked Pops overboard were given even the time of day by B-2...it was sad seeing him get rolled by those grifters.

Nothing will huh? Well I can tell you this, a stupid Canadian blowing their mouth off about issues that do not concern them could be the straw that broke the camels back. Never underestimate an American.
