"Demonstrate to me how an AR-15 would be more useful to me than the two weapons I mentioned. I do not think you can do that."

Perhaps I can. The first advantage of an AR-15 is that you would have one weapon that could fill both roles. I just finished an 20" barrel AR-15 for a friend of mine, using Bushmaster and Rock River components. With a 1/7" twist barrel using 77gr Black Hills .223 ammunition, this rifle readily prints groups of 5" at 400 meters. We plan in testing 85gr VLDs in it soon, out to 600 meters. The more common 62gr ammo does less well, but you'd want to use heavier bullets at longer ranges anyway in order to increase terminal ballistics. Granted, this is not as heavy a hitter as your .30 caliber. Depends what you're shooting at.

Close range, this rifle is as easy to move about in close quarters as a 12-gauge, and offers 30 rounds as fast as you care to pull the trigger. These rounds are more controllable than a shotgun pattern, and have the advantage of being able to penetrate body armor, which shotgun pellets cannot. That's a large consideration. If you're using slugs in this role, then body armor is no longer an issue, but now you are subject to the single-projectile limitations of a rifle in any case, with less available rounds and more difficult reloadability inherent in a shotgun.

Food for thought.

Can't you use those QB-8 shells for your shotgun for armor piercing applications? Or are they not available commercially?

I have a mossberg loaded all the time, but find it painful to shoot alot when practicing, particularly the combat shells you want to use for defense - both double ought and slugs. Painful!

Now 9mm carbines are very accurate and reliable that can dump a mag into a head inside house range in a couple of seconds.

AR15s with 20 inch barrels are good and reliable shooters if they are of quality. Even a child can be taught to handle them safely and well. Little recoil.

There are a lot of inexpensive .308 FALs out there right now. As for firepower, they will cut down trees! Lots of cheap magazines available, and most are built from some really fine rifles cut down for import. Really sweet.

I also love the organization called CMP where one can still purchase for a reasonable amount the greatest battle rifle of WW2 and Korea- the M1 Garand. It can really reach out and touch things:) With the ammo they want to ban, it can take out vehicles really easy too.

Good points..... My post to mineral man was that his choices are best for him the AR might be best for others. If he allows others to make the choice for you that says no to an AR then at some point the same incrementalism will make his choices for him . We either all stand togeather or fall individually.

I respect both of your choices as that is what works best for each of you. I believe our location, environment, individual needs, skills and experience drives the selection process for individual small arms for collecting, competition, self defense , harvesting game and maintaining the capability to fullfill the original intent of the 2nd Amendment if ever called upon to do so.

My Key point is to not let some seditious POS socialist make that decision for you........Be they dressed as RINO or RAT !

Stay safe !
