Yes, I do recommend it very highly. Even though I wanted more flashbacks during the violent scenes, it was beautifully done. My favorite parts are the beginning scene in the Garden, a flashback of Mary and Jesus (when he was toddler), and the very ending. The tot scene and the ending scene make me cry just thinking about it. Of course, while he is being tortured you can't help but get emotional and then to have him be in so much pain and still be thinking of others--it's too much for words. The androgynous Devil throughout is very creepy--very nice effect?affect?--I can never remember which one to use.

I'm watching because I actually saw a couple of the films this past year. But I'm upset that Cold Mountain wasn't nominated for Best Picture.

Monster has a depressing, awful theme, but Charlize Theron was stunning in the role. She deserves an oscar, as does Renee Zellweger for Ruby and Jude Law as Inman in CM.

Oh, I forgot about Braveheart on USA. I don't think we get USA at my house so I would have to go over to my parent's and watch it. I need to get that movie on DVD. Great movie.

In case anyone missed it, the best award ceremony was given, the IFP Independent Spirit Awards. Much better nominees, more emphasis on the quality of the films, not on who is owed an award, and awards to honor debut performers and directors.

The big winners yesterday were:

Best Feature
Lost in Translation
Sofia Coppola

Best Director
Sofia Coppola
Lost in Translation

Best Screenplay
Sofia Coppola
Lost in Translation

Best First Feature
Monster
Director: Patty Jenkins
Producers: Mark Damon, Donald Kushner, Clark Peterson, Charlize Theron, Brad Wyman

Best First Screenplay
Thomas McCarthy
The Station Agent

John Cassavetes Award (For the Best Feature made for under $500,000)
The Station Agent
Writer/Director: Thomas McCarthy
Producers: Mary Jane Skalski, Robert May, Kathryn Tucker

Best Debut Performance
Nikki Reed
Thirteen

Best Supporting Female
Shohreh Aghdashloo
House of Sand and Fog

Best Supporting Male
Djimon Hounsou
In America

Best Female Lead
Charlize Theron
Monster

Best Male Lead
Bill Murray
Lost in Translation

Best Cinematography
Declan Quinn
In America

Best Foreign Film
Whale Rider
Director: Niki Caro

As far as I'm concerned, the best films of the year were Lost in Translation, American Splendor, Pieces of April and In America. As far as the Oscars go, they will play it safe and reward those who have been but-kissing and are "owed" awards. Feh!

I find it interesting that people need to be so negative and declare what they are NOT going to do. They post on a thread of interest and state that they aren't interested?

If you don't want to watch, don't watch. If you don't want to participate, don't participate.

But to whine, cry and stomp your feet and scream from the rooftops that you want no part of everyone else's fun, is just plain juvenile.

With what Mel's been up against lately, I also doubt he would be afraid of being booed.

The first leftist vitriol could happen early - the Best Supporting Actor/Actress Awards are usually the first to be awarded... if Tim "Chill Wind" Robbins wins, it could be under 15 minutes.

Only thing worth seeing this year will be "LOTR" awards. The rest I could care less about.

except ,of course, whether Mel Gibson will be belittled by the hollyweird crowd.

I'm joining you in watching Braveheart instead and check in on the thread during the commercials. I've never seen Braveheart so I'm looking forward to it.

I hope Sea Biscuit wins something. I loved that movie.

I agree. Stephen Lang hands down over any other actor -- too bad Hollywood is too PC to nominate such a brillian talent.
