I couldn't agree more. The movie wins EVERY AWARD Except for the Title character who was in virtually ever scene. What a freakin rip off and I wouldn't blame him if he never shows up again. HOWEVER, I believe that slight made him rethink his life. He cleaned up his act after that and became somewhat of a gentleman, marrying his long-time girlfriend and becoming a Father. So for him, it could have been a positive.

All that, and he smells nice, too!

There was a lot of ugliness towards civilians on both sides, particularly in the South, which essentially was a Civil War, but the British never locked anyone in a church and set it on fire.
