The administration rolled out its top immigration officials and several senior Republican senators yesterday to endorse publicly a guest-worker program offered by President Bush that could give legal status to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens now in the United States.

Notice there is no connection between jobs we won't FILL, AND PAY!

Actually, there was. The jobs will now be covered under our labor laws.

That means wage, hour and IRS involvement.

If that happens, how many more jobs do you think will result? How many of those currently employing illegals will still be in business?

I think far fewer and all will be legitamate.

The borders can't be protected much better than they are now without it.

Hey all the jobs in this country right now , this very minute - are supposed to be covered under our labor laws. If we can't enforce them now, how is adding more regulations, and 12 million more people to follow around, ( Not to mention a border purposely kept undefended by our President during a time of War) going to help?

Don't be ridiculous. Just because a guy has illegal immigrant employees, he's not covered by the labor or tax laws? There's no exemption for that situation---and the Labor Board and IRS will "get involved" when they damn well please, just like they do with legit employees.

What amazes me about you defenders of the Bush proposal is your naive (?) faith that yet another law purporting to regulate employers' hiring of immigrants THIS time is going to work....when all it's meant to do is take the heat off scofflaw employers for employing illegals, and off politicians for not doing a damn thing about the scofflaw employers hiring illegals. Oh, yeah: and legalize all the millions here illegally, and bring in millions and millions more, "legally."

The Bush/business plan can't work as a template for a fair employment soceity. Continually re-defining the parameters for fair employment as the Bush-backed immigration plan does will result in a continual displacement of the American worker of limited means.

Well folks, you heard it from a Bush amnesty defender. Illegal immigrants, despite being disproportionate users of taxpayer funded services, do *NOT* pay their "fair share of taxes," as is so often mendaciously asserted by immigration advocates, because they're paid *CASH*.

And they take that *CASH* and they send part of it to Mexico, and use the rest to buy neat stuff you and me often can't afford, because we have to pay taxes.

And NO ONE in EITHER party is talking about giving anyone a TAX amnesty, now are they?

No, we're not. I don't mind reminding you, 10 to 12 million of "us" are illegal immigrants. Not Americans. I don't want them as Americans, since they didn't have the decency to get the permission of my country's laws and democratically elected representatives and public servants to enter this country of mine. And about 70-80% of "us" Americans feel the same way I do. Across party lines. Across color lines. Across ethnic lines.

We all have to live under American law. I hate to remind you.

Define 'interview' [what interview, what purpose?]

Define 'information on the employer' [??]

Define 'applicant' [all applicants, foreign applicants, what will they report?]

You say you watched the Congressional proceedings, so what do you foresee as to what may be the favored policy positon? By which faction? Which specific plan do you favor? And why?

They're "Mexicans." Citizens of Mexico are "Mexicans." They don't become "Americans" just because they enter, reside and work here illegally.

Sheesh, do people around here suddenly not understand what the rule of law is, now that GW needs to cut Vicente Fox some slack? People around here certainly knew what the law meant when Clinton was in office.

Bush deserves to lose. His cowardice on immigration and sovereignty issues are disqualifying. Unfortunately, the Rat alternative is obviously even worse. The only guarantee is a bad leader being sworn-in January 20, 2005.
