The administration rolled out its top immigration officials and several senior Republican senators yesterday to endorse publicly a guest-worker program offered by President Bush that could give legal status to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens now in the United States.

"In announcing his proposal, President Bush recognized America's proud tradition of welcoming immigrants," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, the subcommittee's ranking Democrat. "He acknowledged the essential role that immigrants have had and continue to have in our nation's
life."

Kennedy likes it, the only reason anyone should need to oppose it.

"Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, said America's borders would not be secure "until we supply willing employers with willing workers,"

And can someone PLEASE explain to me what the hell this is supposed to mean and what on earth one has to do with the other?

Senator Kennedy, one of the authors of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, recognizes, quite correctly, that passage of President Bush's "guest worker" Amnesty for Illegal Aliens would represent a major incremental victory for the Democrat Party, which favors full Amnesty.

President Bush is with the Democrats on Illegals, and against the American mainstream, as well as most of the GOP rank and file.

The borders won't be secure until Congress and the Prez allow the Border Patrol to do its job and McCain is not in favor of that.

There are employers in the U.S. who haven't yet figured out how to hire illegal aliens and McCain is trying to help them out.

Do you think getting Clinton-dick-chin Kerry elected president a positive political impact?

He's a traitor in my book

I suggest you rephrase that comment!

Objections to the proposal are one thing, but that remark is nothing short of personal.

If you had watched the hearing on C-SPAN, you would have seen all sides of this issue represented and debated among the attendees.

It was also notable that the democrats did not show up at all.

There is nothing traitorous about attempting to correct a huge problem with our current policies.

This is what was discussed and in some detail. It was quite interesting to hear the experts on both sides of the proposal.

Hey Rove, GWB, buy a clue or win early retirement:

A January Zogby poll shows 74 percent of respondents oppose aiding undocumented workers.

One by one, the officials and the senators told the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, border security and citizenship that the Bush plan, outlined Jan. 7, would fix a broken immigration system, allow U.S. businesses to hire needed workers, bring illegal aliens into the mainstream economy and assure greater homeland security.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong.

None of the Rats showed up for the hearing. They were trying to figure out a way to oppose it.

This will eventually be opposed by the rats as the details emerge.

"...this whole article just makes me sick..."

Agreed. The ONLY way I would support any legislation right now is if the borders are sealed FIRST, so that a continued flood of ILLEGALS, like that initiated by Reagan's 1986 program, is stopped.

....and before some Pro-Illegal-Immigrant FReeper gets on here and starts bitching: I don't really care how this is accomplished.

However here's some suggestions:
1) Hire Ariel Sharon's company that is currently building Israel's Wall to put up another one here (Good fences make good neighbors);
2) Landmines. Lots and lots of landmines;
3) Give all the illegals that are in our prisons for committing crimes in the US a shovel and have them start digging a moat;
4) $10-20 bounty per illegal turned in. Kinda like a 5 cent deposit on bottles (Hey, it works for the Greenies).

That's true of Republicans as well.

The difference is, the Democrats will oppose the Bush Amnesty on politics, while Republicans oppose it on principle.

This does absolutely NOTHING to correct a probem.....

The "problem" at it's heart is border protection.

Anything less is treason, committed by a traitor.

Pure and simple.

this whole article just makes me sick

Hey! I was going to say that. Oh well, bump.

This government has ceased to represent and act for the benefit of American Citizens.

In the next election we will be given the choice of a Socialist or a radical Communist.

Farewell America of my youth. We are screwed.

Now, which is more likely to happen first?
1) Federal thought police will break down my door.
2) I'll be banned from Free Republic.

(minor corrections for clarity) One by one, the officials and the senators shuffeled to the mike and sold out their county to the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, border security and citizenship. They stated that the Bush plan, outlined Jan. 7, (NO APARENT CHANGES) would fix a broken immigration system, allow U.S. businesses to hire needed workers, bring illegal aliens into the mainstream economy and assure greater homeland security.

Why is this producing zero suprise?

Why are the trators not in jail?

Hell, we executed the Rosenburgs . . .

I'm glad to see them getting started on this proposal. If they're going to get the positive political impact, it has to be timed right for the elections.

But Dixie, if he doesn't get reelected, what will it matter?

Reelected! Is that all you can think about? He's been ELECTED! He IS president! He's been president for three frickin' years! What's he doing while in office right now?

I was rooting for the Cubs this year too. Man can I pick 'em.
