SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Zero is the word on Khabab (Mursi) I have looked everyday since the report that he was possibly in Mexico or already here.

Loftus was on Fox this morning (will be every Sunday morning) and didn't mention this but said he firmly believes Saddam's WMD are buried in Syria.

In light of what we are learning about Abdul Qadeer Khan. What do we know, and more importantly, what don't we know?

(Article Snippet) "Al Qaeda's nuclear effort benefited from the help of two Pakistani nuclear scientists, Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood and Chaudiri Abdul Majeed, who have admitted that they had had long discussions with al Qaeda officials in August 2001 about nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.2 Pakistani intelligence officials told The Washington Post that they believe that the scientists used a charity they had created as a cover to conduct secret talks with bin Laden."

"Pakistani officials told The Washington Post, the scientists reportedly admitted meeting with bin Laden, the Egyptian Ayman Zawahiri, and two other al Qaeda officials over two or three days in August at a compound in Kabul. The scientists described bin Laden as intensely interested in nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.3"

"Bin Laden indicated to them that he had obtained, or had access to, some type of radiological material that he said had been acquired by the radical Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.4 Mahmood and Majeed reportedly told bin Laden that it would not be possible to manufacture a nuclear weapon from that material.5 They claim they provided no material or specific plans to bin Laden, but rather engaged in wide ranging "academic" discussions, Pakistanis officials told The Washington Post."

"According to another Pakistani official, however, the scientists spoke extensively about weapons of mass destruction. He described the scientists as "very motivated" and "extremist in their views," but added that they were "discussing things that didn't materialize, but fall under the breaking secrets act."6 Pakistani officials familiar with the interrogations told the Washington Post that the scientists provided detailed responses to bin Laden's technical questions about the manufacture of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.7"

Do we have to be politically correct about those ones in the stratosphere too? Don't want to offend anyone!

If anyone really wants to see the Badr Riyadh videos, Al Jazeera is showing 6 minutes of the video on their website. They have cut out quite a bit of it but it is still representative of the video, and I think you'll pretty much get the idea without all the hype.

The URL is http://www.aljazeera.net/showMedia.asp?item_No=204357&videoPath=&oldMediaItURL=1_204357

"If a device is detonated, is it possible to determine the origin of the radiactive material?"

Yes, it is. The ability to "fingerprint" or obtain the signatures of the origin of weapons grade uranium and plutonium has increased steadly over the past several years. This process is based upon proven methods whose technological base increases steadily.

This real-world ability was protrayed in the 2002 film release of Tom Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears".

What follows is a quote from a 1997 .pdf document entitled:
"Viability of Long-Lived Fission Products as Signatures in Forensic Radiochemistry"

"These signatures include uranium and plutonium isotopic composition, isotopic composition of other heavy elements in the alpha decaychains, and radioactive fission products with a wide range of half-lives. A variety of analytical techniques are then used to quantify these signatures including alpha, gamma, and beta counting as well as mass spectrometric techniques. They have successfully applied these methods to determine signatures whose concentrations in plutonium vary over sixteen orders of magnitude.

How long would that determination take?

About as much time as it would take to collect a sample and run it through an Accellerator Mass Spectrometer or AMS. Again to quote the referenced .pdf: "AMS measurements are rapid —turnaround time is determined by sample preparation which generally requires only a few hours depending on the isotope and sample."

"Would an appropriate response be the use of a weapon of about the same size on a city from which country the bomb material came from?"

The appropriate response is determined by the Commander in Chief under the advisement of the Nastional Security Council, among others, and in accordance with longstanding US policy regarding an attack upon the United States utilizing any Weapon of Mass Destruction.

Al Jazeera is already in deep doo-doo with a lot of people. Saudi Arabia refused to allow them rights to cover Haj this year again. Last week the Iraq Governing Council banned them from access to the council for 30 days.

My understanding is Al Jazeera did cave in and ran the video in it's entirety yesterday on the actual station. At least that's what the Arabic message boards were reporting.

There is supposed to be yet another video tape coming out from Cloud Enterprise on behalf of Al Qaeda in the next few days.

They claim it will be called American Hell in Iraq Part 2.

We'll have to see what it is when it comes out.

Liz,

To the best my knowledge there were no "real" survivors. Family members of the deceased could not even get possession of the remains of their loved ones. Bullet holes in the hostages and the exact type of chemical weapon used were determined and verified.

Reading material needs to be corroborated and I have yet to see corroboation which would prove this operation was not a "self-inflicted wound".

“MEET THE PRESS WITH TIM RUSSERT”

Guest: President George W. Bush

Transcript for Feb. 8th

Russert: Senator Charles Grassley, a Republican

President Bush: Yes.

Russert: said he is absolutely convinced we will capture Osama bin Laden before the election.

President Bush: Well, I appreciate his optimism. I have no idea whether we will capture or bring him to justice, may be the best way to put it. I know we are on the hunt, and Osama bin Laden is a cold blooded killer, and he represents the nature of the enemy that we face.

These are these are people that will kill on a moment's notice, and they will kill innocent women and children. And he's hiding, and we're trying to find him.

There's a I know there is a lot of focus on Iraq, and there should be, but we’ve got thousands of troops, agents, allies on the hunt, and we are doing a pretty good job of dismantling al Qaeda better than a pretty good job, a very good job. I keep saying in my speeches, two thirds of known al Qaeda leaders have been captured or killed, and that's the truth.

Russert: Do you have a pretty good idea where Osama is?

President Bush: You know, I'm not going to comment on that.

Just started checking this thread. A close friend just called from Frederick, Maryland. She said that in today's paper, there is an article saying that they have put in place an emergency plan to use an area of Frederick to shelter refuges from a dirty bomb attack in DC. Apparently there is quite a bit of disagreement about the plan among local officials. Now, I know we have numerous emergence plans (same friend worked at FEMA), but why broadcast this now? Any ideas, folks?
