SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

One bio attack on food that is documented in this book, happened in September 1984 in Wasco County, Oregon. Followers of a Rajhneeshees cult leader purposely poisoned townspeople in ten restaurants and a supermarket with Salmonella typhimurium. They also boasted about similar attacks in Salem, Portland and other Oregon cities.

Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (Marburg Virus and Ebola Virus)

What is viral hemorrhagic fever?

Viral hemorrhagic fever is the collective name given to the diseases caused by a group of viruses such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus. The Ebola virus was named for the river in Zaire where it was discovered. Marburg virus was named for the city in Germany where the disease was first diagnosed. Viral hemorrhagic fever begins with fever and muscle aches and can result in a relatively mild illness or can lead to death.

Where do these viruses come from?

Although the source of these viruses in nature is unknown, this group of viruses can occasionally be found in rodents, ticks, and mosquitoes within endemic areas. Monkeys and humans are also susceptible and may become a source of virus if they become infected. Tissues of infected primates can also serve as a source of infection to staff in laboratories or in import and quarantine facilities that handle primates.

How common are Ebola and Marburg viruses?

To date, there have been four known outbreaks of Ebola virus involving humans; two in Sudan (1976, 1979) and two in Zaire (1976, 1995). Two small outbreaks of Marburg virus in humans occurred in Germany and Yugoslavia in 1967 but were linked to sources of virus in Africa. In most of the outbreaks of Ebola virus infection, the majority of cases occurred in hospital settings where inadequate medical supplies resulted in poor infection control practices. There have been no confirmed human cases of Ebola or Marburg virus hemorrhagic fever in the United States.

What are the symptoms of Ebola virus and Marburg virus infection?

Initial signs and symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, joint and muscle pain. As the disease progresses, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sore throat, rash and chest pain may occur. The disease may also affect internal organs and the ability of blood to clot. When the blood fails to clot, the patient may bleed into internal organs and from body openings. The mortality rates are 50-80% for Ebola virus hemorrhagic fever and 30% for Marburg virus hemorrhagic fever.

How soon after exposure do symptoms occur?

Symptoms of Ebola virus hemorrhagic fever begin 4 to 16 days after infection. Initial symptoms of Marburg virus hemorrhagic fever begin 3 to 9 days after infection. After 3 to 5 days of fever, the hemorrhagic manifestations of the disease begin.

How are these diseases contracted?

Ebola virus and Marburg virus are spread through close personal contact with a person who is acutely ill with the disease. In past outbreaks, only health care workers or family members who were caring for ill persons and had direct contact with blood, semen, or other body fluids of ill people were likely to become infected themselves. Where the virus resides in between human outbreaks is unknown.
How are Ebola and Marburg viral infections treated?
There is no known treatment for Ebola virus or Marburg virus hemorrhagic fever. Treatment for these infections is mainly supportive. There is no vaccine to prevent either of these viral infections.

What can be done to prevent the spread of Ebola and Marburg viruses?

Proper medical isolation of persons known or suspected of having Ebola or Marburg virus hemorrhagic fever will limit the spread of disease. Health care workers who care for these patients use gloves, gowns, and masks to prevent becoming infected themselves. Special care must be taken in properly disposing of medical wastes and tissues from these persons.

Are persons in the United States at risk?

Persons in the United States are at risk only if they have had close personal contact with patients who are infected with Ebola or Marburg virus. Previous outbreaks have been successfully controlled by medical isolation of ill individuals; by use of masks, gowns and gloves; by careful sterilization of needles and syringes; and by proper disposal of waste and corpses.

At the time of the Rashneesh poisonings in The Dalles, Oregon, we lived across the river in Goldendale. They poisoned the salad bars. Think how easy that would be for anyone to do even today. Splatter guards don't prevent people messing with the food displayed.

We went to a Mexican restaurant a couple of weeks ago. I watched a middle aged man stand at the salsa bar for about ten minutes with his back to us. The same thoughts raced through my mind. Once it happens to you or near where you live, you don't forget.

US aware of Pak nuke scientists in Afghan during Taliban rule

NEW DELHI: With the US asking Pakistan to ensure that "private network and individuals" do not become a source of proliferation again, reports say that Washington was well aware of Pakistani nuclear scientists being based in Iran and Afghanistan during the Taliban rule.

Two former senior Pakistani nuclear scientists who were based in the Afghan town of Kandahar had also met Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden several times.

They were later detained and questioned on their return to Pakistan, according to reports including in Pakistani dailies The News and Dawn.

Much before the proliferation issue bogged down Pakistan, there were reports about Pakistani scientists working at a nuclear research centre being developed by Iran at Qazvin near Moallem Kalleiah, 150 km West of Tehran in the El Burz mountains.

Khan was also reported to have secretly visited this facility on several occasions in 1980s and early 1990s.

Since the days of President Gen Zia-ul Haq, when top Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan's underground proliferation activities were on, the Jamaat-e-Islami had developed very close relations with the general headquarters (GHQ) and the doors of GHQ were thrown open to the Jamaat teams giving them a chance to indoctrinate army officers.

KERMANSHAH, IRAN

11/30/03Iraqi delegation headed by Ahmad Chalabi arrives in Iran

Member of Iraq's Governing Council Ahmad Chalabi, heading an Iraqi delegation, arrived in Qasr-e Shirin, Kermanshah province on Sunday through the international Khosravi border, to hold talks with Iranian authorities, IRNA reported.

Chalabi was welcomed on arrival in Iranian territory by Qasr-e Shirin Governor Hossein Khosh-Eqbal and a number of provincial officials.

In a meeting at Khosravi border, Chalabi and Khosh-Eqbal discussed expediting the process for the pilgrimage of Iranians visiting the sacred sites in neighboring Iraq, given the growing number of pilgrims arriving in the country via Khosravi border.

For his part, Chalabi noted the increase in the number of Iranian pilgrims visiting Iraq through the indicated border.

At the meeting, Khosh-Eqbal called for the increased use of the border by the Iranian pilgrims intending to visit Iraq, given the current infrastructures and facilities available in the border city of Qasr-e Shirin.

Head of Iraq's National Congress left for Tehran to meet Iranian officials on matters of mutual concern, after his meeting with Qasr-e Shirin governor.
