SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

This new crop of fund-raisers comes as some opinion polls suggest support for the president among Arab-Americans is sinking and at a time when strategists from both parties say Mr. Bush is losing ground with this group. Mr. Bush has been criticized by Arab-Americans who feel they are being singled out in the fight against terrorism and who are uneasy over the administration's Palestinian-Israeli policies.

Research in Italy Turns Up a New Form of Mad Cow Disease

A new form of mad cow disease has been found in Italy, according to a study released yesterday, and scientists believe that it may be the cause of some cases of human brain-wasting disease.

While the strain has been found in only two Italian cows, both apparently healthy, scientists in Europe and the United States said it should provide new impetus in Washington for the Department of Agriculture to adopt the more sensitive rapid tests used in Europe because it may not show up in those used in the United States.

Yes. Birds and kids get sick all the time, and probably for the same reason -- the birds are packed into coops and the kids are packed into classrooms, thereby increasing contact and precipitating the spread of the virus, bacteria, germ or whatever is making them sick.

IMO this is terrorism because they are satisfying their object of sickness and hitting the economy! PETA did complain about how chickens are raised/treated , so the terrorism could still be domestic.

JP, I respect your views a lot, but I think you're off the deep end on this one. Avian Flu outbreaks have occurred many, many times over the years. The last widespread outbreak was in 1983-84 when something like 20 million birds had to be wacked in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virgina, and Maryland. Terrorism was not the cause then, and I doubt its the cause now. Like global warming and cooling, these things just happen in cycles from time to time.

Ummmmm... No. Sean, where are you? Who are your sources for the Osama bagged-and-tagged story?

This is one of the easiest "scoops" in the business. Let's take a completely unverifiable event, which has a wide-open window of divulsion for mass consumption, testify to certainty that it's true, tie in some further-unverified references to a foiled al Qaeda operation between Iran and Iraq, reported on by ONE person (Mansour Ijaz), jump to a completely unsubstantiated conclusion that enough intelligence was gleaned in order to corner and capture bin Laden, then run with it as a news flash.

I like Mansour Ijaz. I enjoy his "reports" on Fox, however, he also feverishly reported that we were within "hours" of capturing bin Laden according to his "unimpeachable" sources.

I've become extremely skeptical of the work of anyone who claims to "know" what's going on in the Middle East. I know that Ijaz has friends in high places in that region of the world ($$$ is power), but either he's getting bamboozled, or the intelligence services are okay with letting him divulge what he knows on worldwide television without compromising their unrelated, material efforts.

It doesn't jive. After all the internet postings, images, bulletin board messages, it's clear that NEIN and Jill St. Claire are getting completely hoodwinked, and in turn, so is everyone who looks at these "sources" as legitimate to the war on terror.

Last week, several British Airways flights were cancelled, yet again. This does not happen on a whim. Intelligence services had to have CONCRETE, MATERIAL -- yet again -- that was convincing enough for British Airways to flush millions upon millions of dollars down the drain without any protest from the British pilots' union, without any protest from British Parliament (charged with safeguarding the British economy)whatsoever.

I wish Sean could explain where their intelligence is being mined from, because it appears to me that these "intelligence" sites are akin to visiting the psychic who can impress you by telling you everything you already know about your childhood ("You had a mother... She loved you? Am I close?"), but couldn't predict two massive jets nearly destroying lower Manhattan.

A new alert regarding an IMMINENT terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia has been raised by international intelligence agencies...

This should be an urgent item on these sites. It's not.

Speaking of 1984 I remember that horrible stomach flu or virus that everyone had. My babygirl was the first one to show symptoms, she came home from the daycare with it. Then my son and other daughter caught it within a 24 hour period. Then my husband and I was the last to get it.

It was a hell of a time keeping up with bed linen. Whatever that was had our heads over the bath tub while our butts were on the commode.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse); And because of their saying (in boast), `We killed Messiah `Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allaah,' — but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them the resemblance of `Eesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)], and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. `Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)]: But Allaah raised him [`Eesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). Al-Bukhaari (2222) and Muslim (155) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, soon the son of Maryam will descend among you [according to another report: the Hour will not begin until the son of Maryam descends among you] as a just judge. He will break the cross, kill the pigs and abolish the jizyah, and money will become abundant until no one will accept it." "Soon" means it will inevitably happen quickly. "will descend among you" means among this ummah. "A just judge" means that he will come down and rule according to this sharee'ah, and that this sharee'ah will remain and not be abrogated, rather `Eesa will be one of the rulers of this ummah. "He will break the cross and kill the pigs" means he will declare as false the religion of the Christians by breaking the cross in a real sense and proving false the Christians' claims and veneration of the cross. "and he will abolish the jizyah": al-Nawawi said: The correct view concerning this is that he will not accept it, and he will not accept anything from the kaafirs but Islam. If any of them offer the jizyah that will not make him stop fighting them. Rather he will not accept anything but Islam or death. This is the view of Imam Abu Sulaymaan al-Khattaabi and other scholars (may Allaah have mercy on them). End quote. "Money will become abundant" – the reason for this abundance will be the descent of blessings and the spread of goodness because of justice and the absence of oppression or wrongdoing. At that time the earth will bring forth its treasures, and desire to keep money will decrease because they will know that that Hour is at hand. Then he will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him and bury him. Ahmad (9349) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "I am the closest of people to `Eesa ibn Maryam because there was no Prophet between him and me…" Then he mentioned his descent at the end of time. Then he said: "And he will remain for as long as Allaah wills he should remain, then he will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him and bury him." Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (2182). We believe that he will disavow himself on the Day of Resurrection of the claims that he was a god. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And (remember) when Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): 'O `Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allaah?' He will say: `Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner&#8209;self though I do not know what is in Yours; truly, You, only= You, are the All&#8209;Knower of all that is hidden (and unseen). Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things'" [al-Maa'idah 5:116-117] " `Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord. Al-Bukhaari (3435) and Muslim (28) narrated from `Ubaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that `Eesa is His slave and Messenger, a word which Allaah bestowed upon Maryam and a spirit created by Him, and that Paradise is real, and Hell is real, Allaah will admit him through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes." I don't recall the stomach virus from that year, but I definately recall the avian flu. There was a literal quarantine on all poultry farms in the northeast and anyone who had anything to do with the poultry business. Workers and visitors alike had to wear those white jump suits, face masks, and booties when entering a farm, and even motor vehicles couldn't travel from farm to farm unless they were first sanitized.

Bombings Kill 3 Soldiers, Wound 6 in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Roadside bombs have claimed more American lives, killing three U.S. soldiers in separate attacks in Baghdad and Sunni Muslim areas to the north of the capital. At least six soldiers were injured in the attacks, one critically.

In the biggest attack, one soldier from Task Force Iron Horse was killed and four were wounded in a roadside bombing in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. One of the wounded was critically injured and the other three were in guarded condition, the military said.

A soldier from Task Force Olympia was killed and another wounded by a bomb Monday evening in Tall Afar in northern Iraq. A soldier from the 1st Armored Division died and another was wounded in a bombing Monday in central Baghdad.

The latest deaths brought to 541 the number of Americans who have died since President Bush launched the Iraq war March 20. Most of the casualties have occurred since Bush declared an end to active combat May 1.

Witnesses said two roadside bombs exploded Tuesday outside the Anbar Medical College and hospital in Ramadi in the Sunni Triangle, damaging a U.S. Army Humvee. It was unclear if any soldiers or civilians were injured. A third bomb was defused.

As the casualties mount, the United States and its allies are preparing to hand over sovereignty to the Iraqis by July 1, despite disagreements over the best way to choose a new government.

Some members of the Governing Council said the U.S.-favored use of caucuses was losing support.

"This system is alien to us," said Naseer Kamel al-Chaderchi, a Sunni Muslim. "It's based on city councils and the integrity of these councils is in question."

He added that the Governing Council, which is sticking to the June 30 deadline for the transfer of power, hasn't had a formal discussion about caucuses, but said there is an "inclination" toward rejecting them.

Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish Sunni member of the council, agreed that the caucus plan has little support. He said the Americans could simply hand over sovereignty to the Governing Council but most Iraqis wouldn't accept it because the body was appointed by the United States.

"So the second option is to hold a national conference with the wide participation of political and religious figures. A leadership will emerge from this conference to take over," he said. "Personally I prefer the second option because I think it will enjoy the greatest support among Iraqis. They Americans are saying now that they will not block any option agreed upon by the Iraqi people."

On Monday, U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer said he would move to block any effort by Iraqi leaders to put Islamic law as the foundation of legislation in the interim constitution, which is supposed to take effect at the end of February.

However, Mohsen Abdel-Hamid, the current president of the Iraqi Governing Council and a Sunni Muslim hard-liner, has proposed making Islamic law the "principal basis" of legislation, which many Iraqi women's groups fear will threaten their legal rights.

Bremer must sign all measures passed by the 25-member council before they can become law, including the interim constitution. Iraq's powerful Shiite clergy, however, wants the interim constitution to be approved by an elected legislature. Under U.S. plans, a permanent constitution would not be drawn up and voted on by the Iraqi people until 2005.

Sadraldin al-Qubanji, the preacher at the Imam Ali shrine in Najaf and a key figure in the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, said Bremer should be wary of vetoing any constitution with sharia as its basis.

"No foreign views should be imposed on us," he said. "A political crisis will erupt if anyone tries to impose on Iraqis what they do not like."

Under most interpretations of Islamic law, women's rights to seek divorce are strictly limited and they only receive half the inheritance of men. Islamic law also allows for polygamy and often permits marriage of girls at a younger age than does secular law.

Police, meanwhile, arrested five Iraqis suspected in the assassination of Aquila al-Hashimi, a member of the Governing Council who was gunned down Sept. 20 as she left her Baghdad home, the Interior Ministry said.

The men were apprehended 10 days ago in the city of Amarah, 180 miles southeast of the capital, Deputy Interior Minister Ahmed Kadhum Ibrahim told The Associated Press. They were arrested for using drugs but police uncovered "indications" they may have been involved in the al-Hashimi slaying, he said. Police were still investigating.

Al-Hashimi was the highest official in the post-Saddam Hussein administration to be killed in the persistent violence in Iraq since Saddam's fall.

In Samawah, 230 miles south of the capital, Iraqi police said an explosion damaged a small video store that purportedly sold pornographic video discs. The pre-dawn explosion caused minor damage and no one was injured, Iraqi police Sgt. Hussan Tohayer said, adding it was the second such blast against a video store in the town since Jan. 22.

Pakistan Arrests Pearl Murder Suspect, Colleague

KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani police have arrested two Islamic militants, including one suspected of involvement in the kidnap and killing of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, an officer said Tuesday.

The two men, Sajid Jabbar and Mohammad Athar, were arrested in an overnight raid in the port city of Karachi and belong to the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group, Fayyaz Leghari, chief of the investigation branch of Karachi police, told Reuters.

Another senior officer, who did not want to be identified, said Jabbar was suspected of involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Pearl in 2002 as well as several other militant attacks.

"He carries a reward of 500,000 rupees ($8,700) on his head," the officer said.

He said Jabbar was a close associate of Asif Ramzi, another suspect in the murder of Pearl, who blew himself up while making bombs in Karachi in December 2002.

Leghari said Jabbar and Athar were suspected of planning fresh attacks in Karachi. "We have seized a huge amount of weapons and explosives from their possession," he said.

Athar was the chief of the Sindh provincial wing of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and wanted for at least 10 separate terror attacks, including sending parcel bombs to senior police officers.

"Their arrest is a big success for the police and a blow to the terrorists," Leghari said.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which has ties with the Taliban regime which formerly ruled Afghanistan (news - web sites) and the al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), is also blamed for a May 2002 suicide bombing in Karachi in which 11 French technicians and three Pakistanis were killed.

Pearl was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi in early 2002 while researching a story on Islamic militants against a backdrop of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

A British-born militant, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, better known as Sheikh Omar, was sentenced to death in July 2002 for masterminding his murder. Omar has denied the charge and lodged an appeal.

Health officials said they believe a virus is causing the ailments. They have not found any evidence linking the students to each other that would suggest food-borne illness. The sick students live in different residence halls and eat at different locations.
