SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I wouldn't count on ever reading about an illness in the Las Vegas papers, they do not publish that type of info. It isn't good for the tourist to know that it has real problems.

I listen to the Las Vegas radio and none of the callers have said anything about a strange illness.

When I worked at the casino in Laughlin, I couldn't even find out what was happening, after I watched the body go out the door on a stretcher.

While still in real estate, I had an attorney for a client and his office was across the river from the casino's, he stopped in the office one day and I asked him why the cops had taken out 8 people in chains, few hours before.

Another client had stopped for a cup of coffee, after working all night and seeing it happen. My coffee pot and cookie jar sold as much land as all my efforts.

Turned out to be a dope ring and my attorney managed to get a few clients out of it.

People go to casino's to "WIN", they cease to have real life problems, when they walk in the door.

Boil order lifted in Aurora

Aurora lifted its boil order for water Sunday after the city's water supply showed no contamination for a third straight day. The order was issued Feb. 6 when tests showed the presence of E. coli bacteria in the water. High levels of ammonia interfered with the ability of chlorination to kill the bacteria, city spokesman Bill Catching said. The source of the ammonia was not known. Possible sources include goose droppings and discharges from an industry or sewage treatment plant, Catching said.

Hazardous Materials Response Procedures

The mission of the CFD, in a Hazardous Materials incident, is to isolate, contain and stabalize hazardous materials until such time as the proper officials require the owner of the product to properly dispose of the material.
Hazardous materials are defined as: any explosive, flammable, oxidizer, poison, etiologic agent, radioactive, corrosive or other substance or material, in a quantity or form that may pose an unreasonable risk to health, safety and the environment.

Response

Level 1 = Is the minimum initial response to any suspected or potential Hazardous Materials incident. This level is primarily for investigative activities and/or to mitigate incidents involving small quantities or low potential materials. A Level 1 HazMat response consists of: one battalion chief, one engine, one truck, one ambulance and a HIT task force of: one squad and the Hazardous Materials Squad 5-1-1.

Level 2 = Is a confirmed incident involving a moderate or high potential and/or a large quantity of material; or an incident requiring protective clothing above Level D (Structural firefighting clothes); or an incident requiring the need to initiate an evacuation. A Level 2 HazMat response consists of the following units: one Deputy District Chief, one HIT Task Force Team engine, one HIT Task Force Team truck, one Safety Officer, one EMS Field Officer, one Air Mask Support Vehicle and one command van.

Level 3 = Level 3 HazMat incidents are rarely called. This would be an extensive incident which may require additional manpower, more supplies than are normally carried by the HIT Task Force, and an expanded evacuation area.

Emergency Medical Service Response Procedures

Pin-In Response = one engine, one truck, one battalion chief, one squad and one ambulance
EMS Plan I = 5 ambulances, one EMS Field Officer, one EMS Dpty. Asst. Paramedic, one engine, one truck, one battalion chief

EMS Plan II (additional response) = 5 ambulances, one EMS Field Officer, one EMS Triage van, one Deputy District Chief, one command van

EMS Plan III (additional response) = 5 ambulances, one District Chief, and the Deputy Fire Commissioner of EMS.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) developed this course for the Department of Energy (DOE) under the direction of Fluor Daniel Fernald, DOE’s environmental remediation contractor for the Fernald Environmental Management Project. The goal of this contract was to provide needed information and a method to train fire departments and other emergency responders who may be called upon to respond to accidents involving radioactive materials along DOE transportation corridors and routes.

The training material contained in this course is available without restriction. However, please be aware that the representation of certain concepts in the course could be subject to differing professional and personal opinions. We caution that knowledge, experience and sound judgement be used by anyone attempting to translate these materials into instructional programs for emergency responders and others.

Japan Fears New Bird Flu Case After Thai Setback

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan said it was investigating a possible bird flu outbreak on Tuesday, a day after hard-hit Thailand's hopes of declaring victory in its war against the highly infectious disease were dashed.

Agriculture Minister Yoshiyuki Kamei told reporters about the possible outbreak just a day before Japan was expected to have declared its sole outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus over.

Bird flu spread kills leopard in zoo

Bird Flu sweeping through the Far East has jumped a second species barrier, killing a rare leopard and infecting a tiger in a Thai zoo, officials said yesterday.

It is the first time that the deadly H5N1 virus has been identified in cat species, proving again its capacity to spread beyond the poultry flocks that it has infected.

Hawai'i sees many Leptospirosis cases

Hawai'i recorded nearly 500 cases of leptospirosis in the past decade and six of those people died of the bacterial disease, an illness suspected in the death of a Big Island college student last month.

Simon Hultman went hiking and swimming in Waipi'o Valley, a known source of leptospirosis. He died last month.
The disease is transmitted from animals to humans usually when people contact the bacteria through fresh water or mud that has been contaminated by the infected animals — commonly rats or mice — who urinate in the water or soil

NORWALK VIRUS CLOSES TWO HOSPITAL WARDS

Two wards remain closed at Derriford Hospital due to the Norwalk-like virus.

The number has decreased since early last week when four wards were closed due to the virus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea.

A hospital spokeswoman said the wards will be monitored and when signs of the virus are no longer present staff will be able to start cleaning them.

Visitors to the hospital are urged to stay away if they have had sickness, nausea or diarrhoea, until at least two days after the symptoms have gone.

DTHR wages war against dangerous diseases
Health region preparing for any possible outbreaks

Lacombe Globe — The David Thompson Health Region has launched a pre-emptive strike against possible communicable diseases by coming up with a way to hopefully keep outbreaks to a minimum.
DTHR is in the process of hiring five additional full-time individuals to increase the region’s capability to keep diseases such as SARS, the chicken flu and Norwalk Virus--just to name a few--from spreading should they be detected anywhere in the area.

Food poisoning may have caused illness

Valentine's Day wasn't the only thing that set students' stomachs a flutter this weekend.

Late Friday night, close to 50 students sought treatment at St. Mary's Hospital and the University Health Center for nausea, diarrhea and vomiting, a University official said.

The students said they were told food poisoning was the likely cause of their ailments because nearly all of the ill students had eaten {{{chicken}}} at two dining halls that day.

Norwalk-like virus hits Rogue Valley

MEDFORD - A Norwalk-like virus has surfaced in two Jackson County retirement communities.

About 25 residents at Mountain View Retirement Center in Ashland have been troubled by the nausea and violent diarrhea that are commonly associated with the Norwalk virus or close relatives known as "noroviruses."

The outbreak has also spread to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford.

Several Jackson County retirement communities have reported outbreaks of gastrointestinal virus within the past year. Residents of an Eagle Point assisted living community fell ill in November, and more than 100 residents and employees of two Medford nursing homes were sick in January 2003.

Officials at both Mountain View and Rogue Valley Manor have been sanitizing buildings nightly to halt the outbreak. Residents who felt ill were asked to remain in their rooms and workers who attend them have worn gowns and masks to protect themselves.

The noroviruses are named after the Norwalk virus, which was identified as the source of an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1972. They are also known as "cruise ship viruses" because they sometimes appear on those vessels, infecting large numbers of passengers and crew.

Quarantine set up to halt spread of avian flu strain

DOVER, Del. — Officials responded to a new discovery of bird flu Tuesday by ordering a quarantine of 80 farms and the slaughter of {{72,000}} more chickens. The swift action was aimed at averting more bans on U.S. exports.

The second case of disease was found in a commercial flock of roaster-type chickens in northern Sussex County, at least five miles away from the farm where the first flock tested positive last week.

The chickens at the second farm were killed Tuesday afternoon, said Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse.

Perdue Farms said it had destroyed the 72,000 chickens to prevent the spread of the disease. The company said the flock was believed to have been infected by a nearby flock of chickens that was raised for the New York City live markets.

The first flock found to be infected was raised for those live markets, state officials have said.

All sales of live poultry in Delaware, all sales or auctions of farm equipment and all farmer and grower-related meetings have been canceled. {{About 80 farms within a six-mile radius of the two farms will be quarantined, state officials said.}}

Seven nations, including some of America's largest export customers, have banned at least some poultry imports from the United States because of the bird flu cases.

Annual poultry exports total more than $1.7 billion, about $1.4 billion of it in shipments of broiler chickens. Countries that have banned U.S. imports, including China and Japan, imported at least $245 million in U.S. broiler chicken in the past 11 months, said David Harvey, an Agriculture Department economist.

{{If the avian influenza does not spread,}} the impact of the bans could be short-lived, said Richard Lobb, a spokesman for the National Chicken Council, a producers and processors trade group. But U.S. officials must show the world that they have the disease properly diagnosed and are eradicating it, Lobb said. In previous poultry disease outbreaks, foreign officials have ended bans quickly after they were assured that their flocks would be safe from contagion if they resumed imports, he said.

On Tuesday, China joined Poland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea in {{banning U.S. poultry imports.}}{{{ A ban by Russia,}}} America's largest poultry export market, affects only imports from Delaware.

Agricultural attaches in U.S. embassies will provide their foreign counterparts with results of tests on the type of bird flu found in Delaware, said Agriculture Department spokeswoman Julie Quick. The results could confirm that the Delaware strain is not the type that devastates flocks, she said.

Mercury Cleanup 2/13/04

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency has finished decontaminating a Las Vegas home where a teen was sickened last month by mercury vapors.

About $175,000 in federal Superfund money was spent demolishing a swimming pool and much of the home's interior, and hauling tainted debris to a hazardous waste dump in Beatty, the EPA said in a statement Thursday.

Michael Coleman, 17, was released from a Las Vegas hospital after treatment for acute mercury poisoning. The family dog, Snowball, was also treated by a veterinarian.

Federal and Clark County health officials checked Coleman's family, friends and schoolmates, and Coleman's school, but no further mercury contamination was found.

Coleman told investigators he got a jar of the liquid metal from his uncle in September and played with it until November, when his grandmother threw it in the trash.
