SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Re: Philly Hotel incident

IF you believe the news reports, the envelope was baking soda left by a tenant, they even located the guy. Said he used it to brush his teeth.

QUESTION: For those who believe attack in imminent, such as myself, can any of us come up with a reason why AQ has not struck yet. ["they don't have the nukes" is not a valid answer...this is for those who believe they DO have them] How do these people think. What are they waiting for. Any intelligent ideas?

I posed the same question earlier, and there were few responses..(I don't know one way or the other if they DO have them..seems plausible, but I am also 'somewhat' skeptical at the same time)..

Let me try to add one possible reason: they don't want to hit us while W is Pres, because they fear the retaliation. However..IF Kerry wins..all bets are off, and the attack begins in earnest. After all, if we are nuked and "Effin" is Prez, he'll probably want us all to enter federal programs to teach us to "understand and sympathize with the plight of the Arab terrorists". You know..real "metrosexual" (whatever THAT is) type stuff.

I go with the Bekka Valley in Lebanon which was reported early on and which I believe it is John Loftus that continues to say that that is where the Saddam's WMDs are and being guarded by the military there.

Interesting post. I'm struck again by the thought that the Russians are having their practice run to deter aggression on our part (along with the usual reasons). Now what reason would we have to be aggressive toward them? In fact, we have many former Warsaw pact members in NATO.

What reason could they come up with to believe that we were going to aggress upon them? They know that- when- (I'd rather believe if) we are hit with WMD, we have already stated that we will retaliate massively- against any country involved. They know that.
And they must know that AQ got some of their unaccounted for nukes.

I suggest you read the article I posted in 1890.

The reason they haven't hit us yet, is because we made it known that AQ backing nations will be obliterated, if we get hit. Those nations, in turn have been keeping AQ from escalating things to that degree. I think that makes sense and would explain, why they haven't hit us with nukes yet.

Mexicans Who Worked in U.S. Seek Pay

Mon Feb 9,10:03 PM ET

By MORGAN LEE, Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY - About 200 Mexicans who worked in the United States during and after World War II protested in front of the U.S. Embassy and the president's residence to demand back pay they said is due them.

An estimated 300,000 workers — known as "braceros" — were contracted by the U.S. government to relieve the labor shortage during World War II. They want to recover pay that was withheld and never returned to them after they went back to Mexico.

Last month, President Bush proposed a similar program for migrants who now have jobs in the United States, prompting braceros to demand that they also be paid.

On Monday, the former braceros in straw hats gathered outside the U.S. Embassy, demanding the U.S. government help track down the salary withholdings, which some say disappeared after being deposited in Mexican banks.

The braceros then marched to the Los Pinos residence of President Vicente Fox. On Saturday, the braceros pushed their way past guards at Fox's family ranch in Guanajuato state, to demand the money.

The braceros "feel tricked and used," said Francisco Arredondo, a leader in the National Braceros Association.

"The U.S. businesses that made the deductions know where the money went," Arredondo said. "We're asking Bush and the embassy not to be accomplices."

Fox ordered a criminal complaint filed against the protesters who forced their way past guards Saturday, Interior Secretary Santiago Creel said Monday.

"No one can be permitted to invade someone else's property to complain or make a demand," Creel said at a news conference.

For several years, about 10 percent of the workers' paychecks were withheld for savings and pension funds that were supposed to be paid to them once they returned to Mexico.

In 2002, a U.S. federal judge in San Francisco dismissed most of a class-action suit filed on behalf of the workers, largely on technical reasons.

In light of the Philly incident....

I'm undecided as to whether this was a hoax.

Honestly, I'm not sure I believe the results in a lot of these. They are calling them all clear way too quickly and many never have testing results published.

Is my tinfoil too tight?

Thanks, FO..

Good info in 1890, and I read it earlier but didn't give as much thought to the "nation state backer" angle. You may very well be on to something here.

I wonder if Lunev's memo ever made it to Dubya. I know it was posted on Newsmax, and also know of him from previous articles there. But do you know if his suggestions were ever actually implemented?

It's a very dangerous chess game we're in now. And we can't even see all of the players.

God help us all if "Effin" gets elected. We will be in SERIOUS trouble if that occurs, IMHO. (And, our side is a little too self-assured of a positive outcome in November for my liking right now. Typical..Demorats plan and attack viciously, while we sit back and 'expect' to win without the same level of effort back. Maybe one day we can get our own "Carville" types as strategists and start beating the 'rats at their own game..but Karl Rove has to go first, as I think he's a big part of the problem).

Oil spill fouls 30 miles at Shore

Crews work through the night to beat nor'easter

BY MARYANN SPOTO
Star-Ledger Staff

Racing against an approaching storm, crews were expected to work through the last night to clean up oil that has fouled more than 30 miles of coastline in Monmouth and Ocean counties since Tuesday, killing dozens of birds and endangering other wildlife.

Banks of floodlights trucked in to aid the overnight cleanup illuminated workers in biohazard gear as they scooped up balls of oil. By this morning, officials estimated, more than 100 specialists from several state and federal agencies and private environmental remediation firms will be combing oil-specked beaches.

"Right now, we're trying to get as much as we can before the weather even becomes an issue," said John Edwards, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard, the agency leading the probe into the mystery spill.
