SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Thanks.

Actually, I found that interview. But there was a separate story. It might have been something dubious (Debka?). I thought they took it from that same paper.

It might have been my imagination.

But if anyone else remembers a rumor about 2 suitcase nukes, a serial number, and NYC a few weeks after 9/11, let me know. I'd hate to think that I'm now delusional. Maybe I too need to buy some tin foil?

Well now, if you REALLY want tinfoil....

I just tried to redo my search adding in the term, Serial Number to see if I could pull that specific article.

Look at this search message:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=The+Dawn+2001+serial+number

From Google:

"In response to a complaint we received under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint for these removed results."

I honestly don't know what was removed and why. Maybe it really was a copyright incident....but you never know now.

Report: Probers Suspect Bin Laden Shipped Nukes to U.S.

A day after Osama bin Laden told a Pakistani newspaper that he had obtained nuclear weapons and is willing to use them against the U.S., another Pakistani paper claims investigators suspect he has pre-positioned the weapons inside America.

"Pakistani and American investigators believe that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network may have successfully transported several nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction to the United States," The Frontier Post reported Saturday.

A source with knowledge of the bin Laden nuke probe told the Post that the FBI, the CIA and Pakistani intelligence now believe that at least two briefcase-sized nuclear weapons may have reached U.S. shores.

Investigators have traced at least one of the weapons to bin Laden's Al-Qaeda terror network.

"The weapon identified is small 8-kilogram device that carries at least 2 kg of fissionable plutonium and uranium," the Post said. "The device, of Russian make, carries a serial number 9999 and manufacturing date October 1988."

The charging mechanism can reportedly be activated through a timer or even through a cell phone command.

In September, Rep. Christopher Shay, R-Conn., who has chaired 18 hearings on terrorism since 1998 as head of the House subcommittee on National Security, warned the bin Laden "suitcase nuke" scenario should be taken seriously.

"We've known for years that the host countries have developed nuclear and biological agents and that they haven't been reluctant to share them with the terrorists," Shays told WABC Radio's Sean Hannity. "And frankly, the race we have right now is to make sure that [terrorists] don't get a nuclear device."

Shays said an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin had initially admitted to his committee that "out of 140 of [their tactical nukes], the Russians could only account for about 80 of them.

" "Now the Russians are denying that, and we don't really have a straight answer from our own government," he added. On Saturday, Putin discounted the bin Laden nuke threat, saying he doubted Al-Qaeda had obtained a nuclear device from Russian sources.

The White House echoed the Russian president, saying the U.S. had no evidence suggesting bin Laden had obtained nukes.

In 1992, former Soviet intelligence agent Stanislav Lunev first outlined the threat posed by Russia's suitcase nukes in his book "Through the Eyes of the Enemy." Lunev is the highest-ranking Soviet military spy ever to defect to the U.S.

To find out what Lunev told the CIA about Soviet suitcase nukes inside the U.S., get a copy of his exclusive interview with NewsMax.com, CIA Files.

Just checking in....

My apologies for not being able to post the ricin information. Critical server failures over the weekend can really cut into freeping time. Between the failures and new hardware and software deployments I'm not going to be able to be as active as I'd like. I will however continue to pray that we will all stay safe. Al-Qaeda nukes may have reached US shores
UNGA session possible terror target

Naveed Miraj
11/10/2001
The Frontier Post (Pakistan)
http://frontierpost.com.pk/main.asp?id=3&date1=11/10/2001

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani and American investigators converge that Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network may have successfully transported several nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction to the United States, The Frontier Post learnt Friday.

Already on high alert, United States security officials are having sleepless nights that Al Qaeda can strike in New York again on the occasion of United Nations General Assembly session.

Investigators from Pakistan's ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and American FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) are jointly probing into the possibilities of Al Qaeda possessing nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

They have reached a conclusion that at least two briefcase nuclear weapons may have reached the US shores, sources close to these investigators revealed to this scribe.

The investigators have been able to identify at least one briefcase weapon acquired by Al Qaeda from Central Asian rogue groups.

The weapon identified is small 8-kilogram device that carries at least 2 kg of fissionable plutonium and uranium.

The device, of Russian make, carries a serial number 9999 and manufacturing date October 1988.

The design of the device is simple.

The radioactive materials consist of Uranium and Plutonium both kept in separate compartments.

At the top of the two compartments is placed the charging mechanism.

The charging mechanism can be activated through a timer or even through a cell phone command.

Besides nuclear devices, a chemical and a biological weapon have also been identified to be in the hands of Al Qaeda activists.

They are said to be in possession of at least 70 capsules, also of Russian origin, containing a very lethal biological agent.

Broken in a crowded place, this capsule can cause deaths on a huge scale.

It melts human body meat to the bone.

Another chemical agent in the hands of Al Qaeda operators is called Vipera Lebentina Venema.

A derivative of snake poisons, this venom developed in USSR attacks through skin.

Most probable way of using this agent is through mail as with Anthrax.

US security agencies are already on high alert and realise that Al Qaeda can strike in New York again on the occasion of UN General Assembly.

Analysis of the recent statements released by Osama bin Laden carried out by US agencies has shown that the terrorist network can pick up an important occasion like the UN General Assembly session to retaliate against US strikes on Afghanistan.

11/2001 Nuclear al-Qa`ida reportedly acquires a Russian-made suitcase nuclear weapon from Central Asian sources. The device is reported to weigh 8 kg and to possess at least 2 kg of fissionable uranium and plutonium. The report said the device, with a serial number of 9999 and a manufacturing date of October 1998, could be set off by a mobile phone signal.

Thank you. That sounds about right.

Anyone interested should google "Mitrokhin" (he just passed away recently - - was a KGB historian who defected) and "Weldon" (I think it was his committee), you will find some congressional testimony that is pertinent.

I hope they got them all.

Last week it was reported that Russia had amassed 84.1 billion in cash and gold.

http://www.bday.co.za/bday/content/direct/1,3523,984153-6132-0,00.html

"Vladimir Sokolov, of the international department of the Central Bank of Russia, said the bank held gold in its reserve portfolio partly for the purpose of lowering investment risks.

He said that gold accounted for 10,5% of Russia's total reserves and was helping to meet one of the bank's key criteria for reserve asset management safety. The central bank had no intention of lowering the gold component in its reserves."

Using this figure that would be approximately 8.8 billion in just GOLD reserves.

Operative Sought al-Qaida's Help in Iraq (found on the person of Hassan Ghul (the Gatekeeper))

By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An anti-American operative in Iraq appealed for help from al-Qaida leaders to help spark a sectarian war between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in an effort to "tear the country apart," U.S. officials said Monday.

The officials confirmed a report Monday in The New York Times about the alleged plan, which was outlined in a 17-page letter that U.S. forces confiscated from an al-Qaida suspect in Iraq.

"We believe the report and document are credible. We take the report seriously," Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy chief of operations, told a news conference. He said the letter would be made public later.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the letter was on a computer disk found on Hassan Ghul, a senior al-Qaida courier arrested last month by Kurdish forces as he tried to enter the country from Iran.

The Times said its reporter viewed the Arabic document and a military translation on Sunday. It said the document is the strongest evidence to date of contacts between extremists in Iraq and al-Qaida.

Kimmitt said the letter was believed written by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian who is suspected of having ties to al-Qaida.

"We are persuaded that al-Zarqawi was the author of the letter. It is our understanding that this letter was being taken out of the country for delivery abroad," he said.

Coalition spokesman Dan Senor said the letter talks about "a strategy of provoking violence, targeted at Shiites leaders that would result in reprisals against other ethnic groups within the country."

The strategy is "focused on provoking ethnic sectarian warfare in this country in the hope of tearing this country apart," Senor said.

The Times report quoted unidentified U.S. officials as saying that American forces arrested a man who had the document on a computer disc and was taking it to Afghanistan to get it to al-Qaida's senior leaders.

The author of the document claimed he had directed about 25 suicide bombings inside Iraq, but said the resistance against the U.S. occupation was struggling to recruit Iraqis and to combat American troops.

Senor said "it is clear that the type of techniques we have seen all these have fingerprints of al-Qaida and foreign fighters."

The letter expresses frustration over efforts to force the United States out of Iraq and suggests that attacks on Shiites would prompt retaliation against Sunnis and a cycle of widening violence, the newspaper said.

"It is the only way to prolong the duration of the fight between the infidels and us," the letter says, according to the New York Times. "If we succeed in dragging them into a sectarian war, this will awaken the sleepy Sunnis who are fearful of destruction and death at the hands" of Shiites, it said.

Kimmitt said the wording of the document reflects the author's desperation.

"In many ways this guy is disappointed at his lack of success ... What it does show is that concerted efforts (on part of the Iraqi people and the coalition) is the greatest power he is afraid of. It is almost a sign of desperation," he said.

Senor said the author of the letter talks about "taking action and setting up operations before the June 30 hand over" of power by the Americans to a sovereign Iraqi government.

He said the letter also warns that "the biggest bulwark against the success of this strategy would be the continued standing up of Iraqi security forces, the continued American resolve and the hand over of sovereignty to an Iraqi government."

"All three we are in the process of doing right now, he said.

FWIW:

"DEBKAfile’s sources reveal: Al Hayat’s rerun of report that Made-in-Russia nuclear suitcases were sold to al Qaeda was published to counter Musharraf’s attempts to close the books on the nuclear black market run by top Pakistani scientist A. Q. Khan. Western intelligence believes al Qaeda had Pakistani help to obtain its operational nuclear devices and is keen for full exposure."

Thanks. I remembered the "8"s and that it was a Pakistani paper, but my memory failed on the rest. Part of getting older I guess.

It was 1988 according to the paper. I *do* recall (at least if memory does not fail me again), that this was the time of the reported first "loose nuke". I know that Lebed came forward in 1997, but he was confirming what everyone was fearing.

The first rumor of loose nukes that I remember reading in a newspaper (might have been a Russian one, not Pakistani)was some that disappeared during the Nagorno-Karabakh fighting in the late 1980s. (war over a small piece of land between the Soviet regions of Armenia and Azerbaijan (at the time).

This AQ Khan thing is the thread that when pulled will cause the sleeve to fall off (IMHO).

And if our security had been as terrible 10 years ago, and Tim McVeigh had stolen a small nuke with American plutonium from the Pantex facility in Amarillo, and sold it to the Chechens who then smuggled it into Russia, I guess we'd be pretty jumpy too.

Fumes detected on jet

Published on: 02/08/04

Two Delta Air Lines employees received medical treatment Sunday night after they were exposed to a mysterious odor emanating from a plane at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m. while the employees were unloading bags from a plane that had landed at the Atlanta airport from Boston, said Delta spokeswoman Patsy Mulcahy.

Authorities do not know the source of the odor, which came from the belly of the plane.

The Atlanta Fire Department responded and evaluated the employees as a precautionary measure, Mulcahy said.

No one was injured, and arriving passengers were unaffected.

Perhaps just wishful thinking here.
