Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas – known as "Mr. Constitution" on Capitol Hill for his strict adherence to the document when voting on legislation – won't face any challengers for his House seat this year since he was the only person to file for the race.

The deadline to file in his 14th Congressional District was Friday.

The Liberty Committee, which Paul founded, pointed out the fact lawmakers need not bow to political pressure of parties or economic interests to be re-elected. Paul routinely votes against pork-barrel spending, for example, even opposing potential projects in his own district.

"There is one member of Congress who has proven time and again that consistently upholding the U.S. Constitution is actually good politics," said the Liberty Committee's executive director, Kent Snyder. "Contrary to the myth of the political elite, Congressman Paul not only gets re-elected, but does so by an increasing percentage every election."

Reported the Baytown Sun newspaper: "In the 14th District ... only incumbent Republican Ron Paul of Surfside had filed by the deadline. Paul ... is noted for his strict constructionist viewpoints and voting record – that is, he opposes any legislation that is not expressly authorized by the Constitution."

Said Snyder, "The political elite in Washington will ignore this myth-exploding event. The Establishment media won't report it. But Americans throughout our nation who believe in the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence and codified by the Constitution of the United States should know about it."

The Liberty Caucus is a group of 22 U.S. House members who share Paul's commitment to the Constitution. The Liberty Committee has tens of thousands of members across the nation who support the organization's work.

Paul is a former Libertarian presidential candidate who has held his House seat since 1997. He is a medical doctor by trade who has delivered more than 4,000 babies in his lifetime.

Just for interest sake on a man who's constantly critical of other Republicans, Ron Paul has an only 81% pro-life voting record (well below most Texas Republicans) and has a much more pro-gay voting record than most of his GOP colleagues.

I don't at all see him as a straight-laced conservative.

Gosh, no, he's a pretty straight-laced libertarian. And he has lots of reasons to be critical of other Republicans. However, sure seems that no other people, let alone Republicans, in his district are willing to be critical enough of him to put their money where their mouths are, since no one even filed.

Either he's so right they don't even want to try, or his district is so dead on with his politics that there's no point, but either way, I'm glad we have at least one voice like his in Congress. God willing there will be more soon.

From what I've read, Dr. Paul believes that our constitution is indeed the law of the land.

Sometimes legislation that appears to be "conservative" actually oversteps the constitutional limits on federal government.

As a man of principle, who honors his oath, he cannot vote for such legislation.

I wish we had more like him in congress.

Or, it could be that people are so pleased to have a representative who says what he means and means what he says, and who actually takes stands on constitutional principles that they respect him even when his views differ from their views.

That's not what his district covers now. That's the old one. The lines have been redrawn with the new redistricting, and his district has substantially changed.

Is only remarkable because it has become so unusual. Dr. Paul should be the NORM in Congress, not the exception.

There is a lot of traditional Democrat territory in Ron Paul's district. It is amazing that some well-known Democrat did not step up for the challenge. Maybe the Democrats decided that contesting the seat would be a financial loser.
