President Bush will deliver the annual State of the Union this evening at 9:01pm (Eastern Time). The speech will be webcast live on the White House web site.

The President will discuss the extraordinary challenges our country has faced and the historic achievements we have made. Yet he will also stress that there.s much more for our country to do:

"America this evening is a Nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them…"

"We have not come all this way – through tragedy, and trial, and war – only to falter and leave our work unfinished. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same of us."

He will also remind the American people that we are a Nation still at war, and our government is meeting its responsibility to protect the American people:

"Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since September 11, 2001 – over two years without an attack on American soil – and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting – and false."

"...America is on the offensive against the terrorists..."

"As part of the offensive against terror, we are also confronting the regimes that harbor and support terrorists, and could supply them with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons…"

"...Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better…"

He will discuss the progress we’re making in Afghanistan and Iraq, and renew our commitment to ensuring those countries are free and peaceful:

"The men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free, and proud, and fighting terror…"

"The work of building a new Iraq is hard, and it is right. And America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."

On priorities here at home, the President will discuss why he’s optimistic about our growing economy, and call on Congress to take action that will help turn our economic recovery into a lasting recovery. He will call on them to help train Americans for the jobs of the 21st Century:

"America’s growing economy is also a changing economy. As technology transforms the way almost every job is done, America becomes more productive, and workers need new skills… We must respond by helping more Americans gain the skills to find good jobs in our new economy."

President Bush will also discuss the importance of health care and the major cause for why Americans lack health insurance: the rising costs of health care.

"On the critical issue of health care, our goal is to ensure that Americans can choose and afford private health care coverage that best fits their individual needs. To make insurance more affordable, Congress must act to address rapidly rising health care costs."

Finally, the President will argue that in a time of great change in our country and world, the things that make our country strong should never change:

"We are living in a time of great change… Yet some things endure – courage and compassion, reverence and integrity, respect for differences of faith and race. The values we try to live by never change. And they are instilled in us by fundamental institutions, such as families, and schools, and religious congregations. These institutions – the unseen pillars of civilization – must remain strong in America…"

"All of us – parents, schools, government – must work together to counter the negative influence of the culture, and to send the right messages to our children."

"The President shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

"Again Jackson, look at the polls."

Are these the same "polls" that had Dean winning in Iowa, last night?

The Dems already proved after the 1993 bombing of the WTC that they treated terrorism as a legal issue, not a war as Bush mentioned tonight in his speech.

After 9/11, I have no confidence they would have changed.

But Gulf War I and Gulf War II (certainly the latter) would not have been waged at all by the available Dems. Thus, they would not have had anything to win, only to lose the longer run conflict by not doing anything. Yes, the Dems would have done and won Afghanistan. The issue is whether to go to war, not whether once at war, the Dems would not wage it honorably. LBJ was a dysfunctional exception. To never or almost never go to war, is to cede the planet to the lowest common denomiator, make no mistake about it.

Thoughtfully posted. I'm glad you recognize that the Dems would have fought Afghanistan. Many here would deny even that.

I think, and we have no way of truly knowing, that war in the region would have been waged by Democrats, eventually. Scenario: Dems hate oil. Saudi Arabia is the main breeding ground for terrorism. It's plausible that they could have created a reason for, and invaded Saudi Arabia. It fits with their hatred of oil interests.

Or, another option: Maybe the dems would not have fought GW2 at that time. But Saddam would have eventually pissed off even the most patient man. Eventually something serious would have occured there.

We just can never know -- but I don't think for a second that a Dem WH would mean instantaneous death for our country.

Cuz otherwise, we are screwed. Eventually there will be a Dem WH. Are we to predict the end of America at that time?

I think not.

But back to my main topic: I will not vote for a liberal. Ever. For any reason.

I have to go back to bed. I didn't mean to get in a long argument. I just woke up and surfed FR for a second, y'know? ;)

"CIA, FBI and NSA "

35 years ago it wasn't the same. But all things are cyclical .

I think Clinton in Somalia sums it up! I can imagine of a nightmare of a Gore/Taliban ceasefire in Tehran in 2001.

As important as it was to dismantle Al Qaida, there are other threats that are far more important. North Korea, in particular, but also Iran, Pakistan and Syria, are ready to lead the world down a very grim path.

That we have avoided these dangers so far is irrelevant. We're only a few feet into the minefield, so to speak, so its far too early to start our victory dance. Dealing with proliferation is more important than stopping Islamic terror, and I don't trust the Democrats to seriously handle either.

The Dems would not wage (war) honorably.

Klintoon never waged his *battle* against Iraq or Bin Laden *honorably*. And Hitlery has used extremely sensitive, highly-classified Senate Armed Services Committee information for her personal political purposes (remember her appearance on Meet the Press, finally coming out in support of the war in Iraq, the week before Saddam was found in his hole?)

I believe to my core that millions of Americans will literally perish if Demonrats gain control of our military within the next decade.

As I'm glad that I don't have to be in a bunker tonight with John F. Kerry, I'm glad I'll never be in a bunker with you. You aren't what you claim to be Laz. And you never have been. Maybe you ought to go fight those Canadians you made such a splash about a few years ago.

And after 9/11 they still do ... aren't these libs the same ones that are fighting to give rights to terrorists and have us the tax payers foot their legal bills for lawyers?

Er no. I didn't watch that big government dog and pony show. It's the same dog blap every year.

I was referring to the polls all over this country, including the FR poll where it clearly indicates that Amercan's do not like Bush's "amnesty plan". I take it you missed it.

My point has nothing to do with ideology. My thing is about a growing stench around this forum that I don't like. It's a racist, mysoginistic stench. And I'm no weak tit, I can smack talk with the best. But this place is stinking with racism right now.

While there's still some race-baiting in this forum, it's getting better.

As to your point, I think the Mods do a good job weeding out racists.
