President Bush will deliver the annual State of the Union this evening at 9:01pm (Eastern Time). The speech will be webcast live on the White House web site.

The President will discuss the extraordinary challenges our country has faced and the historic achievements we have made. Yet he will also stress that there.s much more for our country to do:

"America this evening is a Nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them…"

"We have not come all this way – through tragedy, and trial, and war – only to falter and leave our work unfinished. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same of us."

He will also remind the American people that we are a Nation still at war, and our government is meeting its responsibility to protect the American people:

"Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since September 11, 2001 – over two years without an attack on American soil – and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting – and false."

"...America is on the offensive against the terrorists..."

"As part of the offensive against terror, we are also confronting the regimes that harbor and support terrorists, and could supply them with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons…"

"...Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better…"

He will discuss the progress we’re making in Afghanistan and Iraq, and renew our commitment to ensuring those countries are free and peaceful:

"The men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free, and proud, and fighting terror…"

"The work of building a new Iraq is hard, and it is right. And America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."

On priorities here at home, the President will discuss why he’s optimistic about our growing economy, and call on Congress to take action that will help turn our economic recovery into a lasting recovery. He will call on them to help train Americans for the jobs of the 21st Century:

"America’s growing economy is also a changing economy. As technology transforms the way almost every job is done, America becomes more productive, and workers need new skills… We must respond by helping more Americans gain the skills to find good jobs in our new economy."

President Bush will also discuss the importance of health care and the major cause for why Americans lack health insurance: the rising costs of health care.

"On the critical issue of health care, our goal is to ensure that Americans can choose and afford private health care coverage that best fits their individual needs. To make insurance more affordable, Congress must act to address rapidly rising health care costs."

Finally, the President will argue that in a time of great change in our country and world, the things that make our country strong should never change:

"We are living in a time of great change… Yet some things endure – courage and compassion, reverence and integrity, respect for differences of faith and race. The values we try to live by never change. And they are instilled in us by fundamental institutions, such as families, and schools, and religious congregations. These institutions – the unseen pillars of civilization – must remain strong in America…"

"All of us – parents, schools, government – must work together to counter the negative influence of the culture, and to send the right messages to our children."

"The President shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

but it's very difficult to rationally discuss the pro's and con's of his guest worker program when you're constantly responding to the IT'S AMNESTY crowd.

I think the average "Bushbot" would be far more critical of the President if it weren't for that element,

Ah, the "you first" gambit.

Why should you care what anyone else says about anything?

If you've got something to say, say it.

I'm with some posters on some threads, against them on others. Why should it be otherwise?

"Yes Jackson, this seems to be the current trend."

Naw Joe, you've been on the same trend for almost four years now. Nothing current about it.

we have a fantastic leader

You're entitled to your opinion. Will you do me the honor of allowing me to be entitled to mine?

Of course, why have reasoned discussion when it's so much easier to simply make up whatever you want. That's demonstrated day in and day our by the malcontents.

**What's his health status?**

I've been thinking that he could die any day. Alcoholism isn't kind to the body.

Well, over the last 35 years most Dems, not all, were just like Clinton. Tying the hands of the CIA, FBI and NSA and cutting their budgets. Gutting the military, making rules in Congress limiting our ability to gather intelligence, etc.

If it wasn't for Reagan, we wouldn't have the military we have now since they are using the systems he fought for like the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the Apache helicopter, both programs the liberals wanted to end during testing because the test weren't always perfect. But that's why we test, change, adapt.

Now we have massive new ideas and abilities like simply strapping on a $350 GPS device to existing bombs that can now be more precise. And other ideas that came from the first Gulf War...many which barely survived under Clinton. At least he didn't totally gut the programs but he did kill off too many divisions and Naval vessels. Bush 41 did also, but not at that rate.

But even then, it comes down to it's usage and I'll never trust a Democrat to use our military might to defend us since they have a long record of not doing so after WWII. It was the Democratic politicians that screwed up Vietnam and didn't allow our military a victory that was easily at hand.

How about that other Democrat war, the Vietnam war?

They did about as well as the Republican.

I believe that either party would rise to the challenge of national defense, frankly. I think it is hyperbole to claim that a Dem in the WH would result in us losing the WoT. The Dems did satisfactorily during WWII, and I believe WWI as well.

A more relevent example of current Democratic wartime leadership would be Vietnam or Kosovo. Comparing contemporary Democrats to those of the WWII or WWI era is about as fitting as comparing them to Confederates.

Its a question of desire and resolve. Most Democrats have neither when it comes to fighting terrorism, to say nothing of potentially dire threats like North Korea or Iran. The very thought of Dean, Kerry or Clark trying to negotiate with Kim Jong Il makes me shudder.

Who is your leader, Laz? Other than FDR, as you've already proscribed.

Hey that's what FR is all about. Ya know some look through their live through rose colored glasses and some see it though a different set. Glass is full or not so full...Please don't confuse those who want a debate on the MEXICAN issue to those who don't contribute here.

I disagree that Vietnam was any more winnable under a Republican.

I disagree that Gulf War 1 & 2 (and Afghanistan) were any more loseable under a Democrat.

The very thought of Carter handing over satchels of greenbacks to some NorKorCom, by which he got his Nobel Peace Prize, makes me retch.

Get your head out of your ass.

Why do you insist on consitently breaking the rules? I'm not going to defend bullies, but if others can't handle a few simple WORDS posted, then don't cry for me Argentina.

It doesn't seem to bother you since you are very outspoken and very rude...some would say a bully.

And now it's "poor women" who are intimidated? That's the most disrespectful thing I've ever heard in my life. Geez, tighten up your Depends.

c) None of the above.

Just me huh Jackson??

Lift your head and face the facts. Look at the polls, listen to the talk shows. Read these threads.

No Jackson, it's not just Joe. President Bush decided to throw high voltage cables into sea of chaos by suggesting amnesty for *millions* that have broken our laws.

Quit attacking people for speaking their minds. It's very distasteful.

End of rant. Except the jerkoffs ruined the State of The Union Speech thread tonight with their anti Mexican poison. Eff them all.

You know, antivenin is supposed to neutralize poison, not overpower it.

Just curious: are those of us in the majority of Americans who oppose the Bush Amnesty all anti-Mexican?
