Another perspective:
AMERICANS = WINNERS; ANTI-AMERICANS = LOSERS
The most important message is that the US can land a Rover on Mars; while engaged in a world war; while feeding the world; while leading the world economy; while remaining the most free nation on earth; while being the most tolerant nation on earth...
Yet, those people which hate America can only protest ridiculously in the street; commit suicide; hide in holes and otherwise define the words "failure" and "loser".

I'm outraged that America did not go to the United Nations to get permission to land on Mars!
Those arrogant Americans are going it alone again.

Mark, for a first mission to mars by the Brits, they did a fantastic job. Their mission was funded on a shoestring and they were using untried tech. They were able to get an orbiter to mars and put it in a stabilized orbit and will be yielding valuable data. Science is not a zero sum game. I am estatic that both craft made it to mars, and hoping that Opportunity has a sucessful landing.
As for the anti american crowd, I hear ya, the kooks and blood dancers at the other site are so freaking loony that they are starting to look like a parody of themselves.

Yadda. Yep we're number one all around, but you must consider other factors in this instance.
Landers in the desert of the Martian equator succeed, landers at the Martian south pole (including ours), which scientists consider more interesting, do not.
Perhaps Martian life does not desire to be "discovered".
Think about it!

Something to ponder B-2 bomber Spirit. Did anyone of you notice a structure of the rover without gadgets on top? It looks like in shape of B-2.

The British Beagle 2 spacecraft is believed to have landed on Christmas Day but failed to establish contact. Japan's Nozomi probe sailed past the planet after failing to brake.
There is still hope for Beagle2. Pray for our British friends. My heart felt tears to the Japanese. This is indeed rocket science and after years of work to see it fail
well we as a nation know what that feels like. The missions are all different returning different data the scientific community needs to forge ahead with a manned mission. The loss of the data from Nozomi and possibly Beagle2 will delay this for years. JPL did a fantastic job, they deserve a big atta-boy and thanks from a grateful nation.

I sure hope we the Americans we keep up our edge in space technology.
The Mars landing was a clear victory for NASA, let's hope Oppurtunity will have the similar success a few weeks from now.
Imagine the Rover was built by the French, it probably would run out of gas and raise a white flag half way to Mars!
Let's not forget the starcraft - Stardust - was able to follow a comet 150 miles behind its tail and collected a thimble full of stardust for analysis. To fly within 150 miles of a comet, when the comet is traveling over 13,000 miles an hr, is quite a statement of America's space technology.

Very nice, however I think this was Europe's first try and our first two were failures including one unforgivable one where our guys mixed metric and English measurements.

From a purely scientific standpoint, I don't care what the score is. I just want to know what the hell is going on up there. But, it is amusing to see how we showed the Euroweenies (AGAIN) how the grownups get the job done right - the first time. :-)
