WASHINGTON -- Some centrist Democrats may fret about front-runner Howard Dean's ability to match up to President Bush in a general election, but his college transcript sure could.

Bush, who graduated from Yale University in 1968, had a less-than-stellar record, with what the president described as "gentleman's Cs." Dean's transcript shows the political science major sailing through a slight sophomore slump to earn mostly high marks his last two years.

It'd be interesting to know the details of the grading curve in such extreeeeemist classes.

Basically it's whether you agree with the prof or not. I know of one Poli Sci class where the prof gave everyone an A. This reporter's got a lot of chutzpah equating Dean's poli sci major grades with Bush's business school grades.

Howard Dean is no doubt accomplished in academics; otherwise he never would have made it into medical school.
And you know what they day:
A students become college professors and doctors.
B students become successful businessmen.
C students become owners of the successful businesses.

Comparing Dean's transcript with Bush's at Yale is not meaningful. There's all the difference in the world between the grades earned in the mid-'60's by Bush and those earned in the late '60's by Dean.

First of all, you have the adoption of the "Pass-Fail" system, which the article notes, when Dean was a student. According to the article, Dean got "seven honors, 17 high passes and 14 passes," which means 7 A's, 17 B's and 14 C's, more like a low "B" average.

Second, most people I know who went to college starting in the late '60's and on through the '70's were the beneficiaries of the phenomenon known as "grade inflation." Simply put, the instructors who were giving guys like GW C's up to the mid-'60's gave B's and even A's starting in the late '60's for work that would have got the student a "C" before.

Dean's transcript gives him nothing to boast about, just like GW's is nothing to be ashamed of.

I have the same exact tale, but my recollection is that the professor was Czech. Does the name Otto Ulc ring a bell? (its a long shot, but your description sounds like MY pol sci professor to a tee).

In my experience, you can learn just about any course from a few $30 (more expensive these days) books. The classes and the degrees are just credentials.

Why did they release his college transcript? Do they have their heads buried so deep in the sand that they don't realize how bad this makes him look to voters? Or do I have my head buried so deep in the sand that I can't see that voters actually like anti-Americanism?

How does a political science major get into med school?

(answer: he promises to butcher instead of heal....the polical science of abortion.)

How does a bad sophomore year get a middle-class kid without powerful family connections into med school?

(answer: it doesn't.)

I'm wondering how he managed to get into medical school with all those political majors...

What I want to know is what were his grades in biochemistry, organic chemistry, physics, etc.--the hard stuff that I had to study three or four hours a night to get a B (my history, psychology and other puff courses I never studied, but I got B's and C's in them with almost no effort except for going to class and not falling asleep...)

The problem with Dean among other things, is that he thinks that he's the center of the freaking universe and that he's so smart, he claims he's an outsider, but he's not, he's been fed by a golden spoon since birth. Then, are the comments that he makes, in which he thinks he's so smart by saying them, but the truth is he is not.

Can anyone on this site tell me if there are plans to bury Charlie Dean's bones at Arlington National Cemetery. I had a call from a retired Army colonel whose has some of his men and friends buried in Arlington. He is real upset at reports that Charlie is going to be buried there, if the remains brought back from Southeast Asia prove to be those of the turncoat. I need some help on this one. I told the colonel my understanding of Arlington burial policy is that Vietnam war protesters and others who gave comfort to our enemies cannot be buried there. Help me, please!
