Long Beach "Large Caliber Ban" Defeated
On 11/4, the Long Beach City Council passed the FIRST READING of the .50 cal ban ordinance. However, the SECOND READING was voted down on 12/16, and the ordinance placed on "indefinite hold".
To quote one of NRA's attorneys, this vote represents "snatching victory from the jaws of defeat... Please now turn your attention to Contra Costa County, scheduled to consider it in January. We need to keep up the momentum!"
On the NRA Members' Council's email list this morning, NRA's top CA attorney Chuck Michel noted this victory has state-wide implications as another attack on .50-cals is expected from the legislature next year. 2003 marks the second year we've beaten back this atrocity at the state-level (this year it didn't even get out of committee!). These local defeats indicate gun control CAN be defeated whereever gun-owners work together to fight it - at the state OR local level. Chuck also reminds us to now focus on Contra Costa County, where the same ill-advised action is being attempted (and where a freshly-drafted county .50 ban has yet to emerge from the county attorney's office, now mysteriously delayed OVER TWO MONTHS!). Gun-owners have definitely turned a corner in California - 2003 was the first time in over 5 years we've actually passed some pro-gun laws WHILE defeating the anti-gun ones. Um...I'm pretty Marx wasn't plagiarizing. Need's a pretty common word. By the way, you do know that Marx wasn't much for religion, right?
I'm not sure what your point is about recognizing the author, but mine was that the same people who are blathering about people not 'needing' big guns are the same folks who would ask if people 'need' big salaries. In fact, they're redistributionist to the core, ala Commies.

Before any ignorant non-gunners start flaming (too late I see), .50cal is the common caliber for most black powder rifles. Geez why on earth would anyone in the past before cartridges need on of these???!! Sheesh...tell it to the Minutemen will ya??

Don't get overconfident yet, folks:
If it succeeds in Jersey, you can expect it to re-surface in other states.
If this bill is enacted, ALL guns with calibers of .50 or above will be banned in New Jersey.
The anti-gunners, knowing they can't outright BAN ALL guns, have decided to incrementally chip away at the Second Amendment on the State levels, starting in ratholes like Jersey, Maryland, Kalifornia and Massachusetts.

"how much does a bullet for a .50 cal pisto cost?" Depends on whether you want match ammo or ball.
You can get 750 - 800 gr. match ammo off the shelf for about $4.75 a round.
You can buy 650 gr. ball ammo off the Web for about $2.00 a round.
If you have the brass you can reload for less than $1.00 a round.

Why is this? Only by keeping and *gasp* carrying arms may we truly have a chance at preserving life, guarding liberty, and pursuing our happiness (not needs).
In some cases, the gun may even be the thing that brings us happiness!

I urge everyone who owns a .50 caliber weapon to join the .50 Caliber Shooter's Association.
They do a lot of good work in conjunction with the NRA to defend our Second Amendment rights.
I'm sure they were instrumental in this victory.

He was. It is not the word that is copied, it is the entire institution along with its characteristic verbal formula. (You can find Marx's version nearly verbatim in St. Benedict, for instance, who is himself following Acts).
Marx is not much for religion, but he is a typical heretic in that he borrows legitimacy from better and older things, twisting their meaning by changing their context. From each according to abilities, to each according to needs was an ancient ideal of justice and a specifically Christian one. But it was also meant to be entirely voluntary.
Marx changed its whole moral meaning while keeping the verbal formula, saying the same thing while just silently dropping its free character. He knew exactly what he was doing. Taking the words as thereafter infamous, however (as you did, prompting my comments), gives him ownership of a better idea than his own, which he was intentionally stealing.

I was responding to your excellent point about electricity, "preaching to the choir," if you will. I know you're not against the right to keep and bear arms -- my point is that we shouldn't have to explain why we "need" this weapon or that weapon any more than we have to explain why we "need" electricity. I think it's a sad day when we people think they need explanations for us to keep our rights.
The right to keep and bear arms is found in the Constitution, and it is a right that is not to be infringed upon in any way, even by asking "Why do you need weapons?"
As you put it, "How about electricity?"

If the government wishes to limit my activities, it needs to prove a compelling reason to do so. I am not required to justify my actions; the burden of proof rests solely upon those who wish to limit (or compel) my behavior. The default position should always favor personal freedom.Very, very, well said. It's not the answer to the question that's wanting in logic, it is the question itself.

Besides, the Stryker civilian control vehicle is vulnerable to 50 cal rounds. Indeed, why would anyone need a Stryker civilian control vehicle? But they exist, and that is the reason why we need 50cal rifles. It is the truth that the declaration of Independence was founded on, and the strength of our Nation that the people are assumed to outrank the Goobermint where void and prohibited by the Constitution, no matter which brand of Judge interprets it. It is a system that has worked for 200 years without problems, the sudden "need" of the Goobermint to change that is, shall we say, very suspicious.

The ultimate check and balance are the people themselves.
Not too many learn this anymore, though.
Still, the police version of the Stryker hasn't been unveiled yet, but it has been planned for by the designers for awahile.
