Long Beach "Large Caliber Ban" Defeated

On 11/4, the Long Beach City Council passed the FIRST READING of the .50 cal ban ordinance. However, the SECOND READING was voted down on 12/16, and the ordinance placed on "indefinite hold".

To quote one of NRA's attorneys, this vote represents "snatching victory from the jaws of defeat... Please now turn your attention to Contra Costa County, scheduled to consider it in January. We need to keep up the momentum!"

On the NRA Members' Council's email list this morning, NRA's top CA attorney Chuck Michel noted this victory has state-wide implications as another attack on .50-cals is expected from the legislature next year. 2003 marks the second year we've beaten back this atrocity at the state-level (this year it didn't even get out of committee!). These local defeats indicate gun control CAN be defeated whereever gun-owners work together to fight it - at the state OR local level. You can become more involved and hook-up with other NRA members in your area at:

Chuck also reminds us to now focus on Contra Costa County, where the same ill-advised action is being attempted (and where a freshly-drafted county .50 ban has yet to emerge from the county attorney's office, now mysteriously delayed OVER TWO MONTHS!). See http://NRAMembersCouncils.com/contracosta/.

Gun-owners have definitely turned a corner in California - 2003 was the first time in over 5 years we've actually passed some pro-gun laws WHILE defeating the anti-gun ones. We even forced them to compromise on SB-489 (the only bad bill they were able to squeeze through - and it was close!). http://NRAMembersCouncils.com/caspecial/sum2003.shtml

Why do people need a .50?

If there were no .50's, the question next asked would be; Why do people need a .30?

The bigger question is this: If a .50 BMG was fired from a hilltop at a terrorist 2000 yards away and he never heard the bullet that killed him, did it REALLY make any noise?

Because it's the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Needs.

I realize that you are being sarcastic, but there are people who really say and believe that crap.

To them I say, why do you NEED to have a car that goes 80 mph when the speed limit is 70? Did you have to prove that you NEEDED a 14 hp riding lawnmower when your whole lot is barely a quarter acre, half of which is driveway, garage, and house? And why should I have to justify my NEED for anything to anyone before I can purchase it?

"why do people NEED a .50 cal "

Because the feds have it. I'd get an M1a2 Abrams/Rheinmetall 120mm hybrid if I could ...

Yeah, but why do people NEED a .50 cal

Because it's the best widely available caliber for shooting mastodons. You haven't heard of any mastodon attacks recently, have you? Huh? See? It works!

And people want to make them illegal...well, don't come crying to me when it's your '84 K-car that's squished like an empty beer can by a raging mastodon, mister, that's all I have to say...

How much does a bullet for a .50 cal pistol cost?

$.75 to $1.50 depending on type. A box (20) of CorBons for my .454 cost about $30+. Not you typical gangbanger ammo.

Why would anyone need a Navigator when they can get to work as well with a Geo Metro?

Maybe we all should drive Geo's.
