Not to turn this into a conversation about myself, but I agree with you that ultimately, it's about getting ourselves out of the doldrums that happen from time to time. The problem gets worse the longer we choose not to try and remove ourselves.

I had cancer until early this year. I'm a young man, younger than the person who committed suicide. I wasn't depressed by that or felt sorry for myself, though I think a lot of the physical tribulations I encountered did make me feel down, just because it's such a pain in the ass working 40 hours a week, in the winter when you're getting your butt kicked by treatment.

Since then, my girlfriend broke up with me. I decided to focus my mind on recovering (cancer really doesn't end with remission. It affects you in so many ways, physical and emotional). I've only gotten depressed lately, after I came down with a nagging case of pneumonia. Don't know why, but I am. And I think I know what will take me out of it. One is ending some bad habits. But I'm dragging my ass on doing so. And that's the worst thing I can do. But I think apathy, like entropy, is one of those things that we're by the laws of nature, predisposed to.

He had a hard life here on earth. I believe one reason the age 12 to age 30 years are "covered" is because they were so horrific. It would hurt us to know about them - and His enemies would mock. I sometimes say to myself "If the Lord God is strong enough in His desires to work out His Kingdom's purposes that He gave His First-Born Son some pain and trouble - is He strong enough to give some to me?

Well...let's say I'm working on it.

BTW, we're all always working on it. BUT I sense you are not abstinent. If alcohol is your problem you might need to re-evaluate. You are dancing wildly while walking a tightrope.

Congratulations. I sense you've grown quite a bit during these tough times. The tough times are what make you grow up. I've matured 20 years in the last year.

Keep up the good work. I'm happy you're beating cancer and becoming more in tuned with your real self as well.

Just stating my opinion, what part of " I have all the sympathy in the world for people who suffer depression" don't you understand.

I really do, maybe it comes out gruff from behind a keyboard and in the converse maybe some of the posters who are posting are not meaning to lionize suicide either.

How about you give me the same kind of discretion as them.

Thanks. It's interesting you mention becoming "in tuned" with yourself. After cancer, it seems there becomes a "new normal" and sometimes you never go back to the "old normal." I think I'm about to find the new normal.

To be candid, I am having to fall on my knees and completely surrender to God. I am a "work in progress" at the moment. But I finally got to the age where I am now looking back on my life and thinking that want to have a little more to show for it that I have now. And I don't mean materially. Words like "honor" "integrity" "character" are really starting to slice at me.

Thanks for posting that. I feel the same way.

I'll try, I really will. I believe you are sincere when you tell me you meant no harm.

Just........... be careful when there's a grieving widow on a thread. Think of her feelings first, then yours. 'kay?

CTID, we have disagreed many times, and I hope the next sentence doesn't sound trite, it's not meant to be.

We all have problems and it is easy to blame other people and circumstances, but you seem to be relying on yourself for your strength in dealing with your problems, that is very admirable and life affirming, and I truly wish you the best of success and health for your future.

Interesting. Kicking cocaine was a two-obstacle problem. The first was getting off the drugs themselves. Then, the HARDER part was being with myself undrugged. All the feelings come in unmasked and without 'relief'. It's much more difficult than the kicking-drugs part. It makes you grow up.

Sounds like cancer might be similar in some ways.

Can I get on someone's prayer list?

I learned of the passing of two close friends recently (one when I tried to call him today); one friend is in the hospital with pneumonia, another has been diagnosed with colon cancer; my son is going through a rough patch and so are my wife and I. And it's Christmas coming up! How wonderful.

Well this is going to sound gruff again, but this is a public forum, and I wasn't thinking about my emotional feelings, just stating my opinion about an issue, that has far reaching consequences in our society.

Don't sweat what time of year it is. It would suck in spring too.

Get on your knees and surrender to G-d's will. He'll help you. I'll send prayers up to Him to watch over you. You'll be alright.

Without writing a big treatise, I believe this:

In the last couple thousand years, and especially the last few hundred, our culture has switched from an oral one to a visual one.

For millions of years, we relied on interpersonal communication, speech and music to create and maintain our society. Now, a big part of the culture is visual.

I contend the visual channel is overtaxed, and inadequate to create the two-way communcation on which our emotional health depends. We were active participants in the oral tradition, but are much more passive and overloaded in the visual culture.

This is just an idea to throw into the mix.

On FR we are actually overcoming one of the deficits of the visual culture, by using it for two-way communication. That is very healthy and restorative, imho.

Okay. I understand. But having (accidently) hurt this widow, I hope you now keep in the forefront of your mind that real people are behind those keyboards. You cannot always talk dispassionately about an issue, sometimes someone will be hurt by even the best reasoning, while they are in grief.

Consider it a learning experience. L-rd knows I've had my share.

So, how many strokes do you need from a self-proclaimed New York City drug addict? :)
