I'm with you. We could make some huge mistakes if we move too quickly with Iraquification, especially since I don't think we have any reliable way of vetting the people we are trusting. It looks to me the more we try to turn things over the the Iraquis, the more our troops are dying. I'm absolutely for the war continuing, but we need to be realistic about the long struggle we are facing. I'm hoping president Bush has more fortitude than his father did. It looks so far like he does.

The purpose of a military is not to protect the troops.

Where did you ever hear that one? All commanding officers have, at the top of their priorities, the well being of their troops. Or, perhaps you were thinking of the Japanese military towards the end of the Second World War.

"The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.”...General Patton.

I'm afraid GWB isn't mean enough for this - the irony is, if he took off the gloves his poll numbers would sky rocket. The American people would see that as an effort to protect our guys which right now we see as being used as bait.

They never ask that question in the polls - should our forces get tougher, act like this is a war? These people do not think the way we do - they aren't grateful for the powder puff treatment they received instead of "shock and awe." They think we were either incompetent or not tough enough to really crack down as was needed. Saddam was given another chance after the Gulf War, did he react with gratitude?

There is some truth in that in as much as the opposition is desperate to make us look bad. The more progress we make the more desperate their actions become. This seems Bad on the surface......but I have the feeling we have hit a nerve.

Parse the meaning of what I said. The operative word is "purpose." If the purpose of a military were to protect troops, there would be no militaries. The purpose of a military is to effect the will of a political entity, either offensively or defensively.

However, protecting the troops serves the purpose.

"We're at war folks ... "

The Bush administration had us believe the war in Iraq was won. Clearly they spoke and we listend all too soon -- which leads me to believe they're in a situation they did not expect to be in. I believe they do not know what lies ahead which I find troubling. They keep trying to compare Iraq with Japan which isn't logical -- the Japanese didn't keep shooting our soldiers once we "won" that war.
