Coulter gets what she wanted at CU
Conservative author says she thrives on battling liberal critics
By Aimee Heckel, Camera Staff Writer
November 14, 2003
Ann Coulter knew what she was getting into when she agreed to speak at arguably the most liberal hotbed in Colorado on Thursday night.
That's why she came.
"How many normal females are going to want to stand up and be called a Nazi and a racist?" said the conservative author and columnist. "As luck would have it, I happen to enjoy it. ... It perks me up to see liberals have nothing in the arsenal."
About 2,000 people filled the University of Colorado's Macky Auditorium on Thursday night to hear Coulter criticize Democrats in light of the war in Iraq. About half hissed and booed, and the other half laughed at her prickly humor and thanked her with a standing ovation.
Some, like Kevin Cooper of Louisville, said he wanted to hear another viewpoint, even if it contradicted his own.
"You can't make a viewpoint with one side. You have to understand the other side, too," he said.
Coulter said CU was typical of most colleges she speaks at, with a little extra heckling. But one thing surprised her, she said.
"I've never seen this on a college campus before: They were applauding Saddam Hussein," she said after her speech. "I was a little taken aback."
Coulter was referring mainly to one question about when the United States will put the interests of the world before its own.
"I think removing Saddam is good for the world. That question presupposed it's not," she said.
In response, some audience members said that because they do not support the war doesn't mean they support Hussein.
Coulter criticized most of the crowd's questions, calling them not intelligent or thoughtful.
"I go to these college campuses and I'm witnessing a breakdown in cognitive thought," she said.
But criticism Thursday night was mutual. In response to Coulter's advocacy of racial profiling to weed out terrorists, some called her racist and others stomped out of the auditorium.
"It's one thing to talk about liberals or conservatives," said Kerry Kite, CU's diversity director. "There's a big difference to come out and crack jokes that have some sort of meaning. But to just defame other cultures and ethnicities is just plain ignorant."
The CU Cultural Events Board organized the event.

Diversity Director = Thought Police Exactly. They're the campus neocommunist equivalent of the Communist (USSR and Chinese) "Political Officers" who used to accompany Russian and Red Chinese dignitaries on foreign junkets. They followed their little sheep to the bathrooms and made sure they weren't exposed to "capitalist" ideas.

Because Coulter's tendency to jump up and down while shouting "LOOK AT ME" is annoying in a toddler, and intolerable in an adult.
Besides, how many times are you going to listen to the same voices say the same things while nodding your head and going "thats right"? What a pathetic mutual back patting society you have going on there.

I see a need for jobs like "Diversity Director". If jobs like that didn't exist affirmative action and other progams would have people from these positions running real and impotantant jobs. It's hard for them to mess up an already messed up idea.

Randy for a woman who is 45 or so? I sort of doubt that...You gotta be kidding me. Coulter beats the stuffing at 45, of most women who are 19 to 22.
When I was 22, I was dating a hot 43 year old. Wild gal. Wild sex. Great time. Loved her.

"unless of course, promoting a common sense approach to finding terrorists equals defamation and ignorance" Yep...in other words, if it goes over their heads, the speaker must be an idiot.
Leftists filter everything they hear throgh the preconception that everyone is intolerant except them. They're like a cult. If what they hear doesn't "fit" with the programming, it is automatically rejected. Ann does a little reprogramming of those who aren't too far gone. I'm thrilled that she works the colleges. While some might just react, I'll bet she makes a lot of them think.

I love to listen to Ann, I do not find her annoying in the least. And I am home rasing two toddlers. I believe it is my right to listen to her , agree with her, support her and encourage her to speak out more.
I will keep shaking my head in agreement along with her as long as she says what I want to hear. ( again another right I have) SO do you make it a practice to support and listen to people with whom you disagree? That makes no sense does it?
I am gald to have such a mutual back patting society, as I find here at FR, and I say it is about time we had someone who represents our side, talks about our issues and who does so in such a witty and enjoyable way.
Freedom of speech is not just for the anti- American crew these days. To quote my idol, " it's not so much fun when the rabbit has the gun". Ann Coulter

In all honesty, I find all the mutual backpatting on the fringes to lead to a climate of myopia and hysteria. That observation applies to the left fringe and the right fringe - and y'all have much, much more in common than you think.

Ann is spot on as usual....
Wondering why denying the obvious approach to profileing Muslims. It may be that to profile Muslims as vectors of terrorism could just bring up the subject of why are americas prisons black population completely lop-sided as to the black per capita population..
-OR- Why is americas acedemia so totally controlled by liberals with tenure by conservatives almost non existant.. (see some David Horowitz articles)
Oh! yeah!..Liberal damage control at its most obvious..

You can play middle of road all you want. That is your right. I happen to think your group gets nothing done, ever. You spend more time appeasing everyone and insulting everyone to ever have original thoughts or solve any problems.
Why is it any different when you jump up and down demanding attention for your agenda, which I believe is just do nothing at all costs, than it is when we jump up and down to get something done?
