Coulter gets what she wanted at CU
Conservative author says she thrives on battling liberal critics
By Aimee Heckel, Camera Staff Writer
November 14, 2003
Ann Coulter knew what she was getting into when she agreed to speak at arguably the most liberal hotbed in Colorado on Thursday night.
That's why she came.
"How many normal females are going to want to stand up and be called a Nazi and a racist?" said the conservative author and columnist. "As luck would have it, I happen to enjoy it. ... It perks me up to see liberals have nothing in the arsenal."
About 2,000 people filled the University of Colorado's Macky Auditorium on Thursday night to hear Coulter criticize Democrats in light of the war in Iraq. About half hissed and booed, and the other half laughed at her prickly humor and thanked her with a standing ovation.
Some, like Kevin Cooper of Louisville, said he wanted to hear another viewpoint, even if it contradicted his own.
"You can't make a viewpoint with one side. You have to understand the other side, too," he said.
Coulter said CU was typical of most colleges she speaks at, with a little extra heckling. But one thing surprised her, she said.
"I've never seen this on a college campus before: They were applauding Saddam Hussein," she said after her speech. "I was a little taken aback."
Coulter was referring mainly to one question about when the United States will put the interests of the world before its own.
"I think removing Saddam is good for the world. That question presupposed it's not," she said.
In response, some audience members said that because they do not support the war doesn't mean they support Hussein.
Coulter criticized most of the crowd's questions, calling them not intelligent or thoughtful.
"I go to these college campuses and I'm witnessing a breakdown in cognitive thought," she said.
But criticism Thursday night was mutual. In response to Coulter's advocacy of racial profiling to weed out terrorists, some called her racist and others stomped out of the auditorium.
"It's one thing to talk about liberals or conservatives," said Kerry Kite, CU's diversity director. "There's a big difference to come out and crack jokes that have some sort of meaning. But to just defame other cultures and ethnicities is just plain ignorant."
The CU Cultural Events Board organized the event.

"I've never seen this on a college campus before: They were applauding Saddam Hussein,"... Does anyone here have any details of this or is this simply hyperbole by Ann?
You haven't read Ted Rall's Veteran's Day column, have you?

But to just defame other cultures and ethnicities is just plain ignorant." What is this functional moron doing having any kind of a role at a university?
He does not even grasp the meaning of "ignorance".
In fact with regards to some cultures, the more knowledge one has of them, the clearer it becomes that they have little or nothing to contribute to any civilized world.
Whatever this clown is smoking, I am very glad he does not have access to my children. He is the kind of mindless idiot that makes we want to get physical, and it takes a lot to do that...

I am not saying you are lying, but I really doubt that she would say anything bad about any of our military. That must be out of context. I agree that any comnet like taht would not be cute at all, I just don't believe she would say something derogatory about men who were fighting in Iraq. What was CM talking about at the time?

Her greatness is 39. Or atleast she was a few months ago when NewsMax ran a feature article on her.

I know your not and I can't even tell you for sure that it was Matthews show and it wasn't like her to say it, but it was in the context of the conversation about some of our soldiers complaining about things in Iraq.

Despite me being an avid support of conservative causes, I will say that I was somewhat disappointed with the speaking of Ann Coulter. Despite what were very, very good arguments, she tried way to hard to make liberals feel like they were idiots. Despite how much I disagree with liberals, I don't think you can classify them as stupid like Ann did; I can name quite a few stupid conservatives, too, that rant on and on about ridiculous claims. Blind adherance to party dogma is just as much a conservative fault as it is a liberal (as Ann made a comment about).
And, I never heard applauding for Saddam. People made dumb arguments (i.e. - we're hurting the Iraqi people, it's pretty hypocritical for the U.S. to provide weapons twenty years ago to Saddam and attack him now, etc.), but they weren't supporting Saddam Hussein.
Ann Coulter does a very good job writing, but speaking is not her strong point. She's best served staying with books.

The question as to whether or not it was wise to take out Saddam is not answerable yet, so people can realistically have logical opinions on both sides. The bottom line will be the actual body count at the end of this war, and we don't have that yet.Bulls**t. Body counts are no way to gauge the rightousness or significance of a war.
Otherwise American involvement in WWII might have been -- by your measure -- a bad idea.

How many Jews died at Auschwitz? Did it mean nothing?

On the contrary, it was a good idea. The US kills and deaths showed great economy relative to the political gains. The Germans and the Russians can be said to have fought a war for the wrong reasons, or to have fought the wrong war.

I don't want to be a pc dweeb here but where the hell does this 400 years of slavery come from. According to my math the civil war ended in 1865. 400 from 1865 leaves 1465. Columbus that Portugese opressor didn't get here till 1492.

Under President Bill Clinton, such academics where recruited to help our military understand "diversity". They have a clear, vested interest in left wing politicians AND THEY ARE TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN. And being paid with YOUR TAX DOLLARS.

Because Coulter's tendency to jump up and down while shouting "LOOK AT ME" is annoying in a toddler, and intolerable in an adult.I feel that way about your inane posts. Why else would you pop up on an Ann Coulter thread and start throwing the same old ad hominem verbal spitballs if you weren't begging for attention?
Okay, everybody noticed you..... Now skitter away, you mouse.
Have a nice life.
