As far as the woods is concerned, the fire is probably the best way to get rid of the beetles now. But, there's so much to lose up there that thinning and clearing would have been the best path to removing them in the first place. They could have cleared a bunch of bad wood and burned it in the middle of the desert somewhere where it couldn't harm anything else. THe area has neeeded a good burn for decades. That is why the beetle did the damge the past years and now Mother Nature will thin the forest her way. Gene Zimmerman, the SBNF supervisor has mismanaged that forest into a disaster and should be fired.

Was watching KTLA this morning when the fire jumped the 118 and in a few minutes instead of one hot spot there were three and enlarging by the minute!

Scarborough Country just did an interview with a Seirra Geek and a Pro Bush innitiative.I saw the interview, and Sen. Crapo from Idaho just tore the Sierra geek a new one. President Bush is holding all the cards on this issue, and is on record to implement the changes needed to prevent these fires from taking life and property. I coud not believe the geek recomending home owners go to a web site. It was pathetic.

Jeffrey pines do smell like vanilla when scratched. There are tons of 'em in Idyllwild.

with all due respect, many of us are here to read about the fires...
With all due respect, I tend to check the number of posts to any thread.....once you get over 50 or 60 you're well off-subject and into FReepmail mode (if we lived in a perfect world)...

Are those the ones with the bark that smells vaguely of butterscotch? I remember when hiking in the San Jacintos near Idyllwild, I saw large stands of dead conifers up on the ridges. Are these the ones that have succumbed to bark beetles? And is it just the Jeffrey Pines? When I hiked through that area I remember someone mentioning a pest killing trees. Until that point I just thought the trees were dying as part of a natural cycle. Having hiked through the burn zone south of Mount Laguna, which lasted at least 15 hiking miles, I have a profound respect for the damage wildfire can do.
Yes, the Jeffrey Pine. Huge pine cones that almost knock you out if they hit you when they fall.
I flew over the SBNF a month ago and the whole forest is dead or dying from the beetle. Sad to see but now it will be time for a rebirth of the forest.

Yeah but bitchen about that "woman" from Florida non stop.
If it was not for a lot of Freepers advocating that "woman" would have starved to death.
Get over your anti Terri attitude or make your own thread about it. Damn.

What are you talking about? Having her husband on Larry King for the whole program when these fires are going on was ridiculous. Sorry to disappoint you but I wasn't involved in those threads so don't take it out on me. Tonight was not the night to be spending time on that with her husband -- why give him a forum? And why cover Scott Peterson? Why cover the RAT debates and Sharpton?
Guess I wanted to hear about the latest on the fires not see the TV coverage film in the first 5 minutes of the cable shows that I have seen most of the day.

Gene Zimmerman, the SBNF supervisor has mismanaged that forest into a disaster and should be fired."Fired" takes on a whole new meaning now. Sadly, he cannot reap that which he has sewn.
