Yasser Arafat is very ill and Ariel Sharon prefers an early natural death of the Palestinian president instead of deporting or assassinating him, a Lebanese newspaper reported on Monday.

Al Mustaqbal daily quoted unnamed Western and Arab sources as saying Arafat was suffering from acute stomach ulcer that needs an urgent surgery, but Israel's prime minister was denying permission to get the Palestinian leader to hospital.

Arafat's personal physician had applied for a permit to hospitalize Arafat for emergency laboratory tests and surgery, but Sharon insisted on keeping the Palestinian Authority leader confined to his Ramallah compound, the newspaper said.

"Sharon's backtrack from Arafat's expulsion was not the outcome of U.S. pressure or Arab mediation. It was prompted by his conviction that Arafat is close to a natural death and there is no need to making him a martyr," Al Mustaqbal concluded.

If Palestinian perception is that he died a slow and agonizing death because the Israelis denied him urgent medical care, he will be seen as a martyr just the same.

I agree. Bad move. However, transport him to a hospital in Syria, etc and he lives to rule from there (don't think the Israelis would let him back), he's still a threat.

Arghh, this sort of sucks. While I would be happy for the world to finally be rid of Arafat, I couldn't hope but feel like a hypocrit after all the energy and prayers that I have poured into the Terri Schiavo situation. I say give him medical care, but bring the surgeons to his compound to do so (even use PA doctors), and transport the lab work to to a real hospital. If he dies of natural causes, that will be great, but I can't see witholding medical care being a good choice in the long run. Now, if they just execute him in the street, that is another matter entirely and gets my full support.
