Will President Trump face a challenge from within his own party in 2020?
Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake (R) seems to think so. On Sunday, Flake told ABCs This Week that if the president did not change his approach, he is going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for someone else.
Flake, a frequent Trump critic, added that the president is probably inviting a Republican challenge. Any challenger to Trump would face enormous hurdles.
The president remains popular among Republican voters, even as he endures historically low approval numbers at large. In most polls, around 80 percent of GOP voters give Trump the thumbs-up.
Still, Trump would become much more vulnerable if Republicans suffered major losses in the midterm elections set for November 2018.
And its easy to see why some of his most strident GOP critics might think its worthwhile to run against him, even if victory is a long-odds bet.
But who is most likely to do it?

Oh sure. I can just picture any of the Trump rallies - those people wouldn’t turn from Trump to ANY of those choices. Flake is delusional.
I dont think Ted Cruz will ever be president.
Unfortunately it will. Changing the demographics of certain key Republican states has always been the game plan of the left. Just look at Florida. It recently welcomed 200,000 Puerto Ricans to the I-4 corridor. Most will be voting for free stuff, so it's bad news for the Rs.
Has she fixed her drinking problem?
I'll give you that Cruz has ambitions and can probably run as a Trump 3rd term, I don't see how he's going to have objection to Trump policies (so far).
Depending on how savvy Pence campaign is. What is the chance that Pence actually wants to be potus?
As it stands now, of the five Ted Cruz is the only one who would NOT challenge Trump in the primary. Also, of the five, Kasich is the most likely to challenge Trump, followed by Flake, then Martinez, then Sasse.
Yes, I think so.
I agree with almost every syllable Ted Cruz says, but his presentation is awful. He has a hard time connecting with people. He’s stiff. He’s painfully unfunny when he’s trying to be funny.
He’s better suited to be a backbencher Congressman from a conservative district, circa 1982.
Cruz would get obliterated in a general election. A little worse than Romney performed in the electoral college. He’s a dud.
Amazingly absent from this list is any Bushes and I think Jeb Bush is most likely to challenge Trump (again). Kasich might be dumb enough to try it. His father was a mailman, you know.
Ms. Martinez makes more sense as a cabinet member. I wouldn’t rule out any Rinos from New Hampshire. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone like Mark Cuban enter the ring if only to force Trump to spend a lot of money and get under his skin.
I think Cruz would have crushed Hillary. I also don’t think Cruz will run in 2020 because Trump is keeping his campaign promises.
If Trump keeps it up, I believe Cruz will give him an enthusiastic endorsement. Cruz, with good reason, questioned whether Trump would keep his promises. I’m sure Cruz has been pleasantly surprised so far.
Flake sure lives up to his name. PUTZ !
Writing from within his bubble - this writer polled the 3 Republicans at his Christmas parties.
Once Cruz allowed Glenn Beck into his campaign it was over.
Three first-class jerks and Martinez and Cruz, who wouldn’t have a chance either and haven’t shown an inclination to go against the most conservative president since Reagan.
>>> Amazingly absent from this list is any Bushes and I think Jeb Bush is most likely to challenge Trump (again).
Jeb! would draw the same people interested in Kasich. Maybe they will come up with their own deal.
The likelihood of a bus load of twenty supermodels knocking on my door in five minutes each begging me to father their babies is greater than any of these five wanna-bees getting more delegates than Jeb Bush if they tried any crap in 2020.
Martinez? As a New Mexico resident, I've seen the craptastic job she's done here. She's got too much baggage that would come out. She's also got a bad case of do-you-know-who-I-amitis.
Even those Republicans who despise Trump know hes a buzz saw and just want to hide in a closet until its all over. Who wants to step up and be the next Jeb?
