"The stench of failure hangs over [the] White House. The people know it, judging by the opinion polls, Corporate titans know it." The President "seems to concede some major misjudgments. . . . What is lacking is any clear sense of direction."
"What we are witnessing," says David Broder, is a "one-year phenomenon" of a president who is "more spectator than leader." As the Middle East is in chaos, the president---photographed in [golf] clothes, [is] heading off for a weekend at [Mar-a-Lago]. At some point down the road, the phasing out of the [Trump] presidency will confront the Republican Party with an awkward but vital choice of its future leadership [and good leaders are] working together to fill the vacuum of leadership that [Trump's] phaseout has left."
The "White House Staff [is] United by Grim . . . Reality," and the budget proposal according to one aide will have "the half-life of half an hour." Trump's "most cherished goals" cannot be reconciled. According to one unnamed staffer, "the cold, grey light of dawn is breaking."
Already the President's chief advisors are considering tax increases as part of an "overall strategy" on taxes.
OH WAIT. FOOLED YA! None of these stories are about Trump. They are all about Ronald Reagan. I just substituted Trump's name. Story 1, the "Failing Presidency," is from January 9, 1983 New York Slimes. Broder is quoted in the January 12, 1983 WaCompost. The "Grim Economic Reality" is Lou Cannon in the WaCompost, January 9, 1983, and "Tax Increases" is David Hoffman in the WaCompost, Jan. 9, 1983.
Liars gonna lie.
I’m pretty happy with Trump and the first 100 days. The RINO congress not so much.
"I think there is a tension in Clinton between the student of Presidential power and the student of policy," said Michael J. Sandel, a Harvard University political theorist. "As a student of the Presidency, he knows he should keep it simple, but as a student of policy he can't. The risk is that he knows too much. Reagan did not have that problem. For Reagan, a thematic Presidency was easy because he did not know very much. All he had were broad themes on three-by-five cards. Clinton has a CD-ROM in his head."
These facile rationalizations followed less than a week after Clinton's AG had just incinerated 76 Americans -- many of them women and children -- in Waco, Texas.
In working on this biography of Reagan, one thing is clear: how smart and very well informed he was. Smarter than Obama by leaps and bounds.
I don’t think I have to explain what was happening to my blood pressure until I got to the “oh wait” part. :-)
Thanks for posting this. It gives a perspective many of us lose sight of.
OMG!
LOL
I was building up a full head of steam there..

Great post!
That’s a weakness of Satan’s - he hasn’t changes his tactics in 4000 years.
Remarkable what you did there. How sobering! Thank you very much.
Ping
LS the problem is that we voters don’t trust Ryan or any of the republican leaders.
They need to remove government control and interference in HC.
bookmark!!!!
David Broder has been replaced by John Dicerson, Major Garrett, Chuck Todd et al.
The media is activist liberals, ain’t gonna change. The difference is we now have other outlets to get our balance, talk radio, some other news networks etc.
Best vanity I’ve read in a while. Thank you.
Well done.
So, when are YOU gonna run for President?
President Schweikart. I kinda like it. :)
