The Failing Presidency and the Phasing Out of Trumpism
Self | 4/30/2017 | LS

Posted on 04/30/2017 10:06:38 AM PDT by LS

"The stench of failure hangs over [the] White House. The people know it, judging by the opinion polls, Corporate titans know it." The President "seems to concede some major misjudgments. . . . What is lacking is any clear sense of direction."

"What we are witnessing," says David Broder, is a "one-year phenomenon" of a president who is "more spectator than leader." As the Middle East is in chaos, the president---photographed in [golf] clothes, [is] heading off for a weekend at [Mar-a-Lago]. At some point down the road, the phasing out of the [Trump] presidency will confront the Republican Party with an awkward but vital choice of its future leadership [and good leaders are] working together to fill the vacuum of leadership that [Trump's] phaseout has left."

The "White House Staff [is] United by Grim . . . Reality," and the budget proposal according to one aide will have "the half-life of half an hour." Trump's "most cherished goals" cannot be reconciled. According to one unnamed staffer, "the cold, grey light of dawn is breaking."

Already the President's chief advisors are considering tax increases as part of an "overall strategy" on taxes.

OH WAIT. FOOLED YA! None of these stories are about Trump. They are all about Ronald Reagan. I just substituted Trump's name. Story 1, the "Failing Presidency," is from January 9, 1983 New York Slimes. Broder is quoted in the January 12, 1983 WaCompost. The "Grim Economic Reality" is Lou Cannon in the WaCompost, January 9, 1983, and "Tax Increases" is David Hoffman in the WaCompost, Jan. 9, 1983.

Liars gonna lie.

Great post. If you don't mind, I might post it elsewhere.

Of course, When Obama got sworn in, he was winning Nobel Peace Prizes and people were fainting in the streets at the sight of him because he offered "hope and change" and was literally the Messiah according to the gushing press.

And people try to say that the media is not biased!

I was getting madder and madder the more I read!

I guess nothing is really new - except I am losing any patience I had.

No, look at the rules for posting “well researched” editorials.

I ALWAYS have good research, usually stuff you cannot find anywhere else, and good data (ditto).

I sure hope you didn’t try to find similar quotes addressing obama. It would’ve been a frustrating act of futility.

The sad part is that our party leaders are in fact working against Trump.

I say vote on a one paragraph bill that ONLY repeals OC and puts us back to the day before OC was passed.

I’ve never seen it.

I’ve seen some of the strongest not survive, so I’m totally convinced that the owner owns the nuts and bolts of this forum.

Well, if you listen to Trump’s “Deface the Nation” interview, that’s not it. They are having a pool for pre-existing conditions, lowering premiums, and will have crossing state lines in part 2. He seems pretty firm on that.

Very cool, and unfortunately not surprising.
It was this sort of stuff that made me call BS on the media, even though I’d been part of it for years.
Cheers, and thanks,
Jim

I think you could find similarly dismissive assessments of Bill Clinton in 1993

Indeed, but, if you recall, the press narrative at that time was: "Reagan was successful because he was a dolt. Bill Clinton is failing because his mind is just TOO POWERFUL."

At one point some wag actually claimed that Reagan's brain was like an index card, but Clinton's was like a CD ROM (they were bleeding edge tech in 1993) and we all needed to catch up with him to understand how his failings were really going to lead to huge successes.

And the rest, as they say, is a stained blue dress.
